What a topper does
Sleep Foundation describes a topper as a thicker layer meant to noticeably change firmness, rather than to protect against liquids or dirt. It lists what a topper can do:
- Make a mattress firmer or softer
- Temporarily make up for slight sagging or indentations
- Add height to the bed
- Slow wear on the mattress underneath
It is a way to change your bed without buying a new mattress. It is also easy to remove, move to a new bed, or take with you when you move.
What a topper does not do
- Fix a sagging mattress. Sleep Foundation says the only true fix for sagging is manufacturer repair or replacement. A topper can only make a mild dip more comfortable for a while. See toppers on a sagging mattress.
- Protect from spills. Toppers are usually not designed for that. A pad or protector is. Compare them in mattress pad vs topper.
- Treat pain. A better-matched surface may make sleep more comfortable, but persistent back, hip or shoulder pain needs a medical look.
The main types
| Type | Feel | Best known for | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Memory foam | Slow sink, close contour | Pressure relief; isolates motion | Memory foam |
| Gel memory foam | Like memory foam, cooler to the touch | A cooler first feel | Gel foam |
| Latex | Contouring with bounce | Responsive support; Dunlop is denser, Talalay more breathable | Firm toppers |
| Egg crate (convoluted) foam | Light, bumpy surface | Simple, light softening | Egg crate |
| Wool | Soft, breathable | Temperature regulation | Wool |
| Down and feather | Fluffy, plush | Hotel-style softness | Down vs feather |
The descriptions for memory foam, latex, wool and feather come from Sleep Foundation's overview of topper types.
Do you need one? A quick self-check
- Your mattress feels too hard and you wake with sore shoulders or hips: a soft topper may help. See soft toppers.
- Your mattress feels too soft and your hips sink: a firm topper may help, if the mattress is not sagging.
- Your mattress is fine but you want to keep it clean: you probably need a pad or protector instead.
- Your mattress has a visible dip or is past the typical 6 to 10 year replacement window Sleep Foundation suggests: a topper is a short-term patch at best.
Specs and labels worth knowing
- Thickness: 1 to 4 inches is typical. Thicker means a bigger change. See our thickness guide.
- Firmness: usually rated on a 1 to 10 scale, 10 being firmest.
- CertiPUR-US (foam): made without formaldehyde, ozone depleters, certain phthalates, and mercury, lead and other heavy metals, with VOC emissions below 0.5 parts per million.
- OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 (textiles and covers): every component tested against more than 1,000 harmful substances. Certificates are issued for one year, and you can check a label number on the OEKO-TEX site.
- Straps: some toppers rest loose on the mattress; others have elastic straps to stop shifting.
- Care: most have a removable, washable cover, but the inside generally needs spot cleaning, and some are dry clean only.
Getting the most from a topper
- Choose by your sleep position. Side sleepers usually want more cushioning at the shoulder and hip, while back and stomach sleepers usually need more support so the hips do not sink. See our soft and firm topper guides.
- Check the base first. Foundations with fewer than six legs, or slats spaced too far apart, can make a mattress sag early. Fix that before blaming the mattress.
- Rotate it. Turn the topper head to foot when you rotate the mattress. Sleep Foundation suggests rotating every three to six months unless the maker says otherwise.
- Protect it. Put a washable pad or protector over the topper, since the topper itself is hard to clean.
- Re-measure your sheets. A topper adds depth, so fitted sheets may need deeper pockets.
What to look for when you buy
Memory foam topper, 2 to 3 inches
Best for: A first topper to soften a firm bed
Memory foam offers deeper pressure relief and isolates motion well, per Sleep Foundation. It is the most common topper type.
Watch out: Can sleep warm, and too soft for some back and stomach sleepers.
See options on AmazonLatex topper, 2 to 3 inches
Best for: Adding responsive support or firmness
Latex offers pressure relief with enough bounce to make moving easier, and Dunlop latex is the denser type, per Sleep Foundation.
Watch out: Not for anyone with a latex allergy.
See options on AmazonFiber-fill pillow-top topper
Best for: A light, washable softness boost
Fiber fill is lightweight, soft and suits people sensitive to down, according to Sleep Foundation.
Watch out: Compresses over time and adds little support.

- What is the point of a mattress topper?
- To change how your bed feels, firmer or softer, without replacing the mattress. It can also add height and slow wear.
- Is a mattress topper the same as a mattress pad?
- No. A pad is thinner, usually 1 to 2 inches at most, and mainly protects. A topper is thicker and changes firmness.
- How long does a mattress topper last?
- About 3 to 5 years, according to Sleep Foundation, depending on material and use.
- Do mattress toppers really work?
- They work well for adjusting firmness on a mattress that is still in good shape. They do not fix sagging.
- Does a topper go under or over the mattress pad?
- Under. Put the topper on the mattress, then the pad or protector, then the sheet.
