Firm mattress topper: how to add support to a bed that feels too soft

Quick answerA firm mattress topper is a 1 to 4 inch layer, usually dense foam or Dunlop latex, that makes a mattress that is too soft feel more supportive. It works best on a mattress that is still in good shape but softer than you like. It will not fix sagging or deep body impressions. Back and stomach sleepers, and heavier sleepers, tend to get the most from one.

What a firm topper can and cannot do

Sleep Foundation's buying guide says the right topper can add firmness to a mattress that is too soft, and can also help protect a mattress that is already firm from wear. That makes a firm topper a good fit for a bed that is structurally fine but sinks a little more than you want.

The same guide is clear about the limit: if a mattress is sagging or has lasting indentations, a topper won't resolve its issues. A firm layer laid over a dip tends to bend into the dip. If you can see a hollow where you sleep, read our guide to toppers on a sagging mattress before you buy anything.

A firm topper also trades away some cushioning. Sleep Foundation notes that firm toppers often don't have the same level of pressure relief as softer models. If your main complaint is sore shoulders or hips rather than sinking, a firm topper may be the wrong tool.

Materials that actually stay firm

Most firm toppers are made from one of three materials. Each feels different.

MaterialHow it feelsTrade-off
Dunlop latexSpringy, even support, little sinkHeavy; some people react to natural rubber latex
High-density polyfoamFlat, steady supportLess contouring than memory foam or latex
Firm memory foamFirm at first, then softens and contoursHolds heat; slow to respond when you move

Sleep Foundation describes Dunlop latex as denser and firmer than Talalay latex, and generally more durable because of that density. Its firm topper guide calls Dunlop responsive, with light cushioning that does not hug the body too tightly. Talalay latex is softer and is usually used for comfort, so a topper labeled only as "latex" is worth checking.

Memory foam is the tricky one. The Polyurethane Foam Association notes that many viscoelastic foams soften with body and room heat. A memory foam topper sold as firm may feel noticeably softer after you have been lying on it for a while.

Who a firm topper suits

According to Sleep Foundation, back and stomach sleepers often benefit from more support and may prefer a thinner, firmer topper, while side sleepers usually prefer a thicker, softer one. Heavier sleepers sink more and may get more pressure relief from a firm topper. Lighter sleepers may not sink in enough for pressure relief, and the guide notes that even a medium topper may feel firm to someone who weighs under 130 pounds.

If you have back pain, firmer is not automatically better. A trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain, published in The Lancet, found that people on medium-firm mattresses did better on pain and disability than people on firm ones. Our topper guide for back pain covers that in more detail.

Common mistakes

What to look for when you buy

Dunlop latex topper, 2 to 3 inches, firm

Best for: Back and stomach sleepers who want a springy, supportive surface

Dunlop latex is denser and firmer than Talalay and is generally considered more durable, per Sleep Foundation. It gives support without the deep sink of memory foam.

Watch out: Skip natural latex if you have a latex allergy, and expect a heavy topper that is awkward to move.

High-density polyfoam topper with firm rating

Best for: Heavier sleepers who want a flat, steady feel

Density greatly affects how much height and firmness foam loses over time, according to the Polyurethane Foam Association. A firm rating plus high density gives support that lasts.

Watch out: It contours less than latex or memory foam, so side sleepers may feel pressure at the shoulder.

Thin 2 inch firm topper for a slight change

Best for: A mattress that is only a little softer than you like

Sleep Foundation suggests a thinner topper when you want a slightly firmer surface. It changes the feel without raising the bed much.

Watch out: Too thin to help if the mattress is very soft or worn.

Firm topper with corner straps and a washable cover

Best for: Anyone tired of a topper that slides out of place

Straps keep a dense layer lined up with the mattress, and a removable cover is the part you can actually wash. Sleep Foundation advises spot cleaning latex rather than exposing it to much water.

Watch out: Check strap length against your mattress depth before you order.

When to talk to a doctor: A firmer bed is not a treatment for back pain. See a doctor if back pain lasts more than a few weeks, is worse at night, or comes with numbness, weakness in the legs, or bladder or bowel changes, which need urgent care. Avoid natural latex toppers if you have a latex allergy.

Questions people ask

Can a mattress topper make a bed firmer?
Yes. A firm topper made of dense foam or Dunlop latex can add support to a mattress that feels too soft. It works best when the mattress is not sagging.
What is the best firm mattress topper material?
Dunlop latex and high-density polyfoam keep a firm feel most reliably. Memory foam can soften with body heat, so a firm memory foam topper may feel softer once it warms up.
How thick should a firm mattress topper be?
Toppers usually run 1 to 4 inches. Choose a thicker one for a mattress that is much too soft, and a thinner one for a small change.
Is a firm topper good for side sleepers?
Often not. Sleep Foundation notes side sleepers usually prefer a thicker, softer topper that cushions the shoulders and hips.
Will a firm topper fix a sagging mattress?
No. A topper can't resolve sagging or lasting indentations. It may help for a short time, but the mattress itself needs repair or replacement.
