Mattress topper for a sagging mattress: a stopgap, and how to make it a good one
We research products from makers' specs and health sources; we do not run hands-on tests. Links to Amazon may earn us a commission at no cost to you. How this works.
- Dense latex topper, 3 inches or thicker. Best for: A mild sag on a mattress you need to keep for a while longer. See options on Amazon
- High-density firm foam topper, 3 to 4 inches. Best for: Bridging a shallow dip when you are latex sensitive. See options on Amazon
- Topper with corner straps or elastic skirt. Best for: Any topper going on an uneven bed. See options on Amazon
The honest answer: a topper hides a sag, it does not fix it
Sleep Foundation calls a topper a temporary way to improve comfort on a sagging bed, and says the only true fix for sagging is manufacturer repair or full replacement. Its firm topper guide is blunter: if a mattress is sagging or has lasting indentations, a topper won't resolve its issues.
Why? A topper rests on whatever is under it. A soft topper drapes into the dip. A dense one bridges it a little better, but over weeks it tends to follow the shape below. The aim is to buy time, not to restore the mattress.
Check these four things before you buy
- Is it the foundation? Sleep Foundation notes that foundations with fewer than six legs, slats spaced too far apart, and older, worn foundations can cause premature sagging. Lift the mattress and look. Also check the maker's minimum slat spacing, since it can affect the warranty.
- Have you rotated it? Sleep Foundation suggests rotating head to foot every three to six months unless the maker advises against it. Rotating can still help a mattress that already sags, because the heaviest body zones move onto firmer areas. Do not flip most modern mattresses, which are usually one-sided.
- Is it under warranty? Sleep Foundation says sagging is worth checking against the maker's warranty terms, and many warranties set support rules, such as slat spacing, too. Read the warranty before adding a topper, and keep the receipt and photos with a straight edge laid across the dip.
- How old is it? Sleep Foundation says mattresses should generally be replaced every 6 to 10 years, and that excessive sagging means it should be replaced as soon as possible.
If you go ahead: what makes a topper work better on a sag
Sleep Foundation says toppers typically have 2 to 5 inches of foam, latex, wool, down, down alternative or feathers, and that thicker toppers made of denser materials tend to perform best against sagging. In practice:
| Topper type | On a sagging bed |
|---|---|
| Dense latex, 3 inches or more | Best at bridging a mild dip; holds shape |
| High-density foam, 3 inches or more | Good; firmer versions resist sinking into the hollow |
| Soft memory foam | Sinks into the dip and can make it feel deeper |
| Down, feather or fiber | Adds softness only; fill shifts into the low spot |
A firmer feel generally helps here, since a soft layer amplifies a hollow. See our guides to thick toppers and firm toppers for the specs.
Short-term comfort tricks
- Pillows on top, not underneath. Sleep Foundation suggests extra pillows under the hips, back or legs as a temporary measure, but advises against putting pillows under the mattress, which can speed up wear.
- Move your sleeping spot. If the dip is on one side, sleeping slightly off it, or rotating so the dip is at your feet, can help until you replace the bed.
- Strap the topper down. On an uneven surface, toppers creep toward the low spot.
When to stop patching
Replace the mattress if you wake with new aches that ease as the day goes on, if you roll toward the middle or the edge, or if the dip is visible with the bedding off. Sleep Foundation notes sagging concentrates where the most pressure lands, usually at the hips and shoulders, which is exactly where you need support most. A topper on a bed like that can keep you on an uneven surface for longer than is good for your back. For what to look for in a topper on a newer bed, start with what a mattress topper is.
What to look for when you buy
Dense latex topper, 3 inches or thicker
Best for: A mild sag on a mattress you need to keep for a while longer
Sleep Foundation says thicker toppers made of denser materials tend to perform best against sagging. Latex holds its shape and resists sinking into the hollow.
Watch out: Still temporary. Skip natural latex with a latex allergy.
See options on AmazonHigh-density firm foam topper, 3 to 4 inches
Best for: Bridging a shallow dip when you are latex sensitive
Higher density foam generally keeps its height and support longer, per the Polyurethane Foam Association. A firm rating keeps you from sinking into the low spot.
Watch out: Raises bed height and may need deep-pocket sheets.

Best for: Any topper going on an uneven bed
Toppers tend to slide toward a dip. Straps keep the layer centered over the support you still have.
Watch out: Check that straps fit your mattress depth.

- Will a mattress topper fix a sagging mattress?
- No. Sleep Foundation says the only true fix is manufacturer repair or replacement. A thick, dense topper can make a mild sag more comfortable for a while.
- What type of topper is best for a sagging mattress?
- A thick, dense one, such as firm latex or high-density foam. Soft memory foam and fluffy fills tend to sink into the dip.
- Should I put something under a sagging mattress?
- Sleep Foundation advises against putting pillows under the mattress, since that can speed up wear. Check and fix the foundation instead.
- How do I know if my mattress is too saggy to save?
- If the dip is visible with the bedding off, you roll toward it, or you wake with aches that ease during the day, it is time to replace it. Mattresses are generally replaced every 6 to 10 years.
- Does a topper void my mattress warranty?
- Check your warranty's terms. Sleep Foundation notes that slat spacing often affects a mattress warranty, so read the support requirements and file any sag claim before relying on a topper.
