What egg crate foam is
Egg crate foam, also called convoluted foam, is a slab of foam cut into a pattern of bumps and hollows, like the inside of an egg carton. You lie on the peaks, which give under your weight, and the valleys leave channels for air.
It can be made from ordinary polyurethane foam or from memory foam, and some versions add gel. The shape changes how the surface feels, but the foam inside still decides most of the comfort and durability.
Strengths and limits
| Strengths | Limits |
|---|---|
| Light and easy to roll up and carry | If the stated thickness is measured at the peaks, there is less foam than in a flat topper of the same height |
| Valleys leave space for air to move | Peaks compress, especially under hips and shoulders |
| Adds quick softness to a firm guest bed or dorm mattress | Density is often not listed; lower density foam may lose height sooner |
| Simple to layer under a fitted sheet | The bumpy feel can show through a thin sheet |
Why density matters here: the Polyurethane Foam Association says higher polymer density generally helps foam keep its original firmness and height. Its mattress bulletin adds that foams at 2.0 pounds per cubic foot or more perform best for height retention, with thickness loss under 5 percent achievable. Many egg crate toppers do not list density at all. If one does, higher is better for lasting use.
Where an egg crate topper makes sense
- Guest beds and sofa beds used a few nights at a time.
- Dorm beds, as a light option that packs small. See our twin XL topper guide for sizing.
- Camping, RVs and travel, where weight and packability count.
- A test run. If you are not sure whether a softer bed will help, an egg crate layer is a low-commitment way to find out before buying a thicker soft topper.
For nightly use on your main bed, a solid foam or latex topper usually holds its shape longer. Our topper basics guide compares the main types.
Egg crate foam and pressure sores
Egg crate pads are sometimes added to home care beds. But for someone at risk of pressure injuries, a thin convoluted pad is not a full answer.
MedlinePlus advises people at risk to use a foam mattress or one filled with gel or air, change position every 1 to 2 hours in bed, and check the whole body daily for redness, warmth, or spongy or hard skin, with extra attention to heels, hips, tailbone, elbows and shoulder blades. It also advises keeping the head of the bed at no more than 30 degrees to reduce sliding.
If you are caring for someone who spends most of the day in bed, ask their doctor, nurse or home health team which support surface they need. Do not rely on an egg crate topper alone.
How to choose and use one
- Check the material. Memory foam egg crate contours more; standard polyfoam is lighter and springier.
- Look for a density figure and CertiPUR-US certification, which means the foam was made without formaldehyde, ozone depleters and certain phthalates, and is low in VOC emissions.
- Peaks up. Most are meant to be used bumpy side up, but follow the maker's instructions.
- Air it out after unpacking before putting sheets on.
- Cover it. Use a fitted pad or protector over it to smooth the bumps and keep it clean.
What to look for when you buy
Memory foam egg crate topper, 3 inches
Best for: A guest bed or dorm mattress that needs a softer surface
Memory foam adds more contouring than plain polyfoam, while the convoluted shape keeps it light and leaves channels for air.
Watch out: If thickness is measured at the peaks, it will feel thinner than a solid 3 inch topper.

Best for: Warm sleepers who want a light topper
Gel adds a cooler first feel, and the valleys let air move. Expect a modest effect, not active cooling.
Watch out: Gel alone may not make foam noticeably more breathable.

Best for: RVs, cots and short trips
Light convoluted foam rolls small and adds a quick layer of cushioning.
Watch out: Not designed for nightly long-term use.

- Do egg crate mattress toppers work?
- They add light cushioning and some airflow, which works for guest beds and short-term use. For nightly use, solid foam or latex usually lasts longer.
- Which side of an egg crate topper goes up?
- Usually the bumpy side faces up. Follow the maker's instructions for your model.
- Is an egg crate topper good for bed sores?
- Not on its own. People at risk need the right support surface, regular position changes and daily skin checks. Ask their care team.
- Egg crate vs memory foam topper: which is better?
- A solid memory foam topper gives more consistent support and usually holds up better. Egg crate is lighter and more breathable.
- How long does an egg crate topper last?
- It depends on foam density. Lower density foam loses height sooner, so check for a stated density.
