Four kinds of soft
"Soft" covers very different feelings. Match the material to the one you want.
| Material | How the softness feels | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Memory foam | Slow sink, close hug, quiet | Holds heat; slow to spring back |
| Talalay latex | Cushioned but springy; easy to turn over | Not for latex allergy |
| Down or down-rich feather | Light, fluffy, cloud-like surface | Little deep support; needs fluffing |
| Polyester fiber (down alternative) | Pillowy, like a thick duvet underneath you | Flattens over time |
Talalay is the softer, more cushioning kind of latex; Dunlop is the denser one. Sleep Foundation's feather topper guide notes that more down means a softer, fluffier feel, while more feather means more support.
Who a soft topper suits
- Side sleepers on a hard bed. Sleep Foundation says side sleepers generally prefer softer toppers that cushion the shoulders and hips. Our side sleeper guide goes deeper.
- Lighter sleepers. A lighter body does not compress a firm mattress much, so the surface can feel hard everywhere, and softer usually feels better.
- A new mattress that turned out too firm after the return window closed.
- Guest beds and futons that need a comfort layer.
When soft becomes too soft
Sleep Foundation explains that a mattress that is too soft lets the hips sink and pulls the spine out of line. For most people, the target is a bed that ends up around medium, about a 5 or 6 on a 1 to 10 firmness scale for side sleepers.
- Back and stomach sleepers usually need a firmer topper to avoid sinking too much, per Sleep Foundation's memory foam topper guide.
- Heavier sleepers: the same guide says side or back sleepers over 230 pounds may want a firmer option. A soft layer compresses flat and you end up on the mattress below.
- A sagging mattress: soft fill flows into the dip. See toppers on a sagging mattress.
If you wake with a sore lower back after adding a soft topper, that is a sign it is too soft for you.
Reading softness on a listing
- Firmness rating. Most brands use a 1 to 10 scale. Sleep Foundation's memory foam topper guide labels 4 as medium soft and 6 as medium firm, so look for a number below the middle.
- IFD. For foam, a lower IFD means softer. The Polyurethane Foam Association defines IFD as the force in pounds needed to press foam down 25 percent.
- Density is not softness. The same association notes a dense foam can be soft and a light foam firm. Choose density for durability and IFD or rating for feel.
- Thickness. Sleep Foundation says 2 to 3 inches changes the feel noticeably. A soft 1 inch topper is barely felt on a hard bed. See our thick topper guide.
Care and comfort tips
- Fluff down and fiber toppers regularly; shake them out when you change sheets.
- Rotate foam toppers head to foot to even out wear.
- Use a protector on top. Sleep Foundation says most feather toppers are dry clean only and many down toppers are hard to keep clean, and foam interiors usually need spot cleaning.
- If you sleep hot, pair soft memory foam with breathable sheets, or choose latex. Our gel memory foam guide explains what cooling claims mean.
What to look for when you buy
Soft memory foam topper, 3 inches
Best for: Side and lighter sleepers on a hard mattress
Memory foam contours closely, and Sleep Foundation says side sleepers generally prefer soft toppers. Three inches changes the feel noticeably.
Watch out: Can sleep warm; too much sink for most stomach sleepers.
See options on AmazonSoft Talalay latex topper, 2 to 3 inches
Best for: People who want softness without feeling stuck
Talalay latex is softer and more breathable than Dunlop, per Sleep Foundation, and its bounce makes turning over easier.
Watch out: Avoid with a latex allergy.

Best for: A plush, hotel-style surface on a bed that is only a little firm
More down gives a softer, fluffier feel, and baffle boxes help keep the fill evenly spread, per Sleep Foundation.
Watch out: Little deep support; usually dry clean only.

Best for: Soft feel for people sensitive to down or feathers
Sleep Foundation notes hypoallergenic down-alternative fills are a welcome alternative for people allergic to down or feathers, and some are machine washable.
Watch out: Flattens faster than foam or latex.

- What is the softest type of mattress topper?
- Down and soft memory foam feel softest, in different ways. Down is fluffy on the surface; memory foam sinks and hugs.
- Can a soft topper cause back pain?
- Yes, if it lets your hips sink too far. Back and stomach sleepers and heavier sleepers usually do better with medium.
- How do I make my hard mattress softer?
- Add a soft topper 2 to 3 inches thick in memory foam, Talalay latex or down. Thinner toppers may not make enough difference.
- Is a soft topper good for heavy people?
- Usually not. Sleep Foundation suggests sleepers over 230 pounds may want a firmer option so they do not sink through.
