Wireless sport earbuds: how to choose a pair for workouts

Quick answerWireless sport earbuds are built to stay in place and survive sweat. The main choice is between in-ear buds with ear hooks, some with noise canceling, and open-ear designs that rest in front of the ear so you can still hear traffic. Check the fit system, the IP rating for sweat and water, battery life and any awareness mode. For example, JLab lists its GO Sport ANC in-ear buds at IP55 with active noise canceling, and its JBuds Open Sport 2 open-ear buds at IP55 with 14.2mm drivers. Keep volume moderate: the NIDCD says long or repeated exposure at or above 85 dBA can cause hearing loss.

Staying aware on runs and rides

If you run or ride near traffic, hearing your surroundings matters. JLab says its open-ear JBuds Open Sport 2 keep outside sound like traffic, a trail or a conversation audible while music plays, because the drivers rest in front of the ear rather than sealing the ear canal.

Sealed buds can also help. JLab says the GO Sport ANC's Be Aware mode lets outside sound through on demand for safety during outdoor runs, without pausing playback. Shokz describes its OpenRun Air 2 as an open-ear design to stay aware, rated IP67, with up to 10 hours of listening.

If you want heart rate during workouts, pair earbuds with a chest strap heart rate monitor.

Protect your hearing

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) says sounds at or below 70 dBA are unlikely to cause hearing loss even after long exposure, but long or repeated exposure to sounds at or above 85 dBA can cause hearing loss. It lists music through headphones at maximum volume at 94-110 dBA, and names listening at high volume through earbuds or headphones as a recreational risk.

Hearing damage from noise is usually gradual, the NIDCD explains, so you might not notice it at first. Over time sounds may become distorted or muffled, or you may find yourself turning up the TV. The NIDCD calls noise-induced hearing loss the only type of hearing loss that is completely preventable, and advises having your hearing tested if you think you might have hearing loss.
