Exercise bike: how to choose an upright or folding bike for home
We research products from makers' specs and health sources; we do not run hands-on tests. Links to Amazon may earn us a commission at no cost to you. How this works.
- Magnetic upright exercise bike. Best for: Steady home rides and a wide inseam range. See options on Amazon
- Folding X-bike. Best for: Small spaces where the bike must be stored. See options on Amazon
- Upright bike with resistance bands. Best for: Riders who want light upper body work in one machine. See options on Amazon
Which exercise bike is right for you?
Exercise bikes come in several styles. This guide covers upright and folding upright bikes. If you want a race-style riding position, see our spin bike guide; if you want back support and an easier step-on, see our recumbent bike guide; and for fan resistance with moving handles, see our air bike guide.
Any of these counts toward activity goals. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans say adults need at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, and that any amount of physical activity has some health benefits. Choose the bike you will actually ride.
Upright vs folding: two examples
| Spec | Sunny 16-level upright | Sunny folding X-Bike |
|---|---|---|
| Inseam range | 25.6 to 37.4 in | 28.3 to 33.5 in |
| Seat height | 29.7 to 40.6 in | 30.7 to 33.5 in |
| Seat adjustment | Up/down and forward/back | Up/down |
| Resistance | 16 magnetic levels | 14 levels, magnetic |
| Max user weight | 300 lb | 300 lb |
| Size | 44.5 x 21.7 x 49.2 in | 33.5 x 21.7 x 52.6 in; folded 22.4 x 21.7 x 58.7 in |
| Bike weight | 50.3 lb | 44 lb |
All figures are from Sunny Health & Fitness's published specifications. The upright model covers a wider inseam range; the folding model takes less floor space when folded.
Specs that matter
- Inseam range. This is the most important fit spec. Measure your inseam and make sure it sits inside the maker's range, ideally not at the very edge.
- Seat adjustment. Up and down is standard. Sunny's upright also adjusts forward and back, which gives more ways to fine-tune fit.
- Max user weight. Both Sunny examples list 300 lb. Leave room above your own weight.
- Resistance. Magnetic resistance is common on home bikes. Compare the number of levels; Sunny lists 16 on its upright and 14 on its X-Bike.
- Drive. Both Sunny examples use a belt drive.
- Pedals. Both list self-leveling pedals with adjustable straps.
- Extras. Transport wheels, a device holder, a bottle holder and a monitor are common. Sunny's upright adds floor stabilizers and resistance bands.
Folding bikes: what you give up
Folding upright bikes save space. Sunny lists its X-Bike at 33.5 inches long in use and 22.4 inches long when folded, with transport wheels.
The trade-off shows in the specs. The folding model's inseam range is narrower, at 28.3 to 33.5 inches versus 25.6 to 37.4 inches on the upright, and its seat moves up and down only. Very tall or short riders should check fit carefully before choosing a folding bike.
Warranty can differ too. Sunny lists a 3 year structural frame warranty and 180 days on other parts for the X-Bike, so read the warranty terms for any bike you compare.
Recalls and safety
Exercise bike parts can fail. In 2023 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of about 2.2 million Peloton Bikes, model PL01, because the seat post assembly could break during use. Peloton received 35 reports of the seat post breaking and detaching, including 13 reports of injuries such as a fractured wrist.
- Search the CPSC recall site for any bike you buy or already own.
- Check seat and handlebar clamps before each ride.
- Stay under the maximum user weight.
- Keep children and pets away from moving pedals and flywheels.
- Put the bike on a level floor, using stabilizers if it has them.
