Do you need to track water?
The CDC says getting enough water every day is important, and that drinking water can prevent dehydration, which may cause unclear thinking, mood change, overheating, constipation and kidney stones. It notes that water has no calories, so replacing sugary drinks with water can help reduce calorie intake.
Your needs change. The CDC says the body needs more water in hot climates, with more physical activity, during a fever, and with diarrhea or vomiting, and that daily recommendations vary by age, sex, pregnancy status, activity level and breastfeeding status. Its first tip for drinking more water is to carry a reusable bottle. A smart bottle adds tracking and reminders on top of that.
How smart bottles track sips
HidrateSpark says its PRO 2 sensor uses SipSense technology and syncs by Bluetooth to the HidrateSpark app, tracking each sip, even with ice. A 360° glow and customizable sound alerts remind you to drink, and built-in Apple Find My helps locate the bottle.
Some bottles are sold sensor-ready. HidrateSpark's 32 oz PRO 2 Smart Ready Bottle comes with a silicone boot that has a compartment for an Apple AirTag, and you swap in the sensor, sold separately, to make it a smart bottle.
Sensor and bottle details compared
| Item | Maker details |
|---|---|
| PRO 2 sensor battery | Up to 21 days per charge, USB-C (cable sold separately) |
| Small sensor fits | 21 oz PRO 2 bottle and 30 oz PRO 2 tumbler |
| Large sensor fits | 32 oz PRO 2 bottle |
| Insulation | Double-wall vacuum, cold up to 24 hours (32 oz bottle) |
| Lids | Chug or straw lid for 21 oz and 32 oz bottles |
All details are from HidrateSpark's product pages. HidrateSpark notes the PRO 2 sensor is not compatible with earlier PRO models.
What to check before you buy
- Battery and charging. A longer-lasting sensor means less charging. Check the cable type and whether it is included.
- Size and fit. HidrateSpark notes its 32 oz bottle's wider base does not fit standard cup holders. If you drive a lot, a smaller bottle may suit you better.
- Insulation. Stainless steel vacuum-insulated bottles keep drinks cold longer.
- Compatibility. Sensors often fit only specific bottle models and generations.
- App and privacy. Smart bottles need an app account. Read what data the app collects before you set it up.
- Reminders. Look for adjustable glow and sound reminders so they help rather than annoy.
Cleaning a smart bottle
The electronics change how you wash it. On HidrateSpark's PRO 2 bottles the sensor replaces the silicone boot at the base, so follow the maker's care instructions for the sensor and the bottle separately. Wash lids and straws regularly.
If you only want a reminder and not the tech, a plain reusable bottle, which the CDC recommends carrying, or a time-marked bottle with printed goals may be simpler and needs no charging.
Using reminders sensibly
- Set a goal that fits your day; the CDC says needs vary by person and activity.
- Drink more in heat, with exercise, or when sick with fever, diarrhea or vomiting, as the CDC advises.
- Choose water over sugary drinks, another CDC tip.
- If you have kidney, heart or liver disease or have been told to limit fluids, follow your doctor's fluid advice rather than an app goal.
