Why a chest strap
Chest straps measure heart rate electrically. Polar describes its H10 as an electrical sensor, compared with optical sensors such as its arm-worn Verity Sense, which read heart rate with light. Research supports chest straps for workouts:
- A 2026 study found the Polar H10 matched a gold-standard ECG system very closely for individual heart rate, with a correlation above 0.99.
- A 2021 study of 25 healthy adults during supervised exercise found a mean absolute percentage error for heart rate of 0.76% with a chest strap versus 3.32% with a vest using the same sensor, compared with a clinical Holter ECG.
The accuracy gap grew for metrics calculated from heart rate. In the same 2021 study, error for estimated energy expenditure was 1.70% with the chest strap versus 6.73% with the vest, and for training impulse 0.38% versus 8.99%. The authors concluded that the chest strap was more accurate for heart rate and training-load metrics during sports.
If you mainly want all-day tracking, a wrist band may be more practical; see our fitness tracker band guide.

Connections: Bluetooth vs ANT+
Both straps here send data over Bluetooth and ANT+. Polar says the H10 connects to a wide variety of training devices with Bluetooth and ANT+. COOSPO says the H9Z connects to GPS watches, bike computers, fitness equipment and apps with Bluetooth 5.0 and ANT+.
- Bluetooth pairs with phones, most apps and many watches.
- ANT+ is common on bike computers and some gym equipment.
Check that your watch, app or bike computer supports the connection before you buy.
Battery life and charging
Battery type affects upkeep. Polar lists the H10 at up to 400 hours of battery. COOSPO's H9Z uses a rechargeable 70 mAh lithium battery rated for 50 hours, charged through a USB cable and dock in about 1.5 to 2 hours, according to COOSPO.
Long battery life means fewer interruptions, while a rechargeable strap needs regular charging. Check the battery type and charging method on the maker's spec sheet before you buy.
Water, fit and care
- Water. Polar lists the H10 as water-resistant up to 30 m. COOSPO lists the H9Z at IP67 and says not to use it for swimming. If you swim, choose a strap the maker rates for it.
- Fit. Polar sells the H10 strap in M-XXL and XS-S sizes. A strap that is too loose can lose contact during movement.
- Washing. Polar says its H10 strap is machine washable. Rinse sweat off after workouts to keep the strap and electrodes clean.
- Temperature. COOSPO lists an operating range of 5 to 40 °C for the H9Z.
Using heart rate data safely
A chest strap is a training tool, not a medical device for diagnosing heart problems. Use it to pace workouts and track trends.
- Stop exercising and get help if you have chest pain, fainting, or unusual shortness of breath, whatever the strap shows.
- If you have a heart condition, a pacemaker or take heart medicines, ask your doctor about safe heart rate targets.
- If readings look wrong, check the strap fit and that the electrodes are moist and clean.

- Are chest strap heart rate monitors accurate?
- Studies comparing them with ECG found very close agreement, with 0.76% average error in one exercise study.
- Chest strap or wrist tracker?
- Chest straps read the heart's electrical signal and suit workouts; wrist bands are easier for all-day tracking.
- Can I swim with a chest strap?
- Only if the maker rates it for swimming. COOSPO says not to swim with its H9Z.
- Will a chest strap work with my watch or bike computer?
- Check for Bluetooth or ANT+ support on both devices.
- How do I clean a chest strap?
- Rinse sweat after use. Polar says its H10 strap is machine washable.
