Rowing machines: how to choose one for home and how to row with good form
We research products from makers' specs and health sources; we do not run hands-on tests. Links to Amazon may earn us a commission at no cost to you. How this works.
- Air rowing machine with adjustable airflow. Best for: People comparing an effort-driven flywheel system. See options on Amazon
- Rowing machine with a raised seat. Best for: Shoppers who need to assess easier seat access. See options on Amazon
- Folding water and magnetic rowing machine. Best for: People considering combined systems and reduced storage length. See options on Amazon
- Long exercise equipment mat. Best for: Floors where the rower maker permits a compatible mat. See options on Amazon
Compare resistance systems without assuming a winner
| System | What to check |
|---|---|
| Air flywheel | How the maker describes effort, airflow adjustment and the feel of the stroke. |
| Water | Tank fill instructions, resistance adjustment and water care for that model. |
| Magnetic | Manual or electronic controls, power requirements and what happens without an app. |
| Combined systems | How each system adjusts and which functions require external power. |
Concept2's RowErg manual explains that its damper changes the feel, like bicycle gearing; it is not a direct resistance setting. Do not compare a damper number with another machine's magnetic level as though the scales were equivalent.
For a combined example, Merach lists water and magnetic resistance for the NovaRow 950. Its water adjustment uses tank volume, while the magnetic system has an electronic adjustment. Do not apply those instructions to every water rower. Ask whether the exact control method suits the way you want to train.
Measure the operating area and storage route
A folded dimension is not the space needed while rowing. Measure the intended floor area, access around the machine and the route to storage. Check nearby furniture and doorways before assuming a long rail can be moved easily.
| Maker example | Published space details |
|---|---|
| Concept2 RowErg | 8 x 2 ft machine. The manual shows a 9 x 4 ft training area inside a 11 x 6 ft free area. Consult the complete diagram when planning clearance. |
| Merach NovaRow 950 | 1990 x 520 x 480 mm unfolded; 1255 x 520 x 480 mm folded. The maker describes drawer-style folding. |
The RowErg separates for storage; its manual says not to stand the assembled machine on end because it may tip. Merach's comparison table describes upright storage for other models, so do not copy that feature onto the 950. Follow the exact model's approved storage method.
Consider the effort needed each time you set up and put away the machine. A stored rower should not block an exit or become an obstacle. If moving it will require help, plan that before purchase rather than relying on a photograph of transport wheels.
Check seat access, leg reach and user limits
Seat height and rail fit are different questions. Concept2 lists 14-inch standard and 20-inch tall seats. The tall version is an access option, not a longer rail. Its specification says users near a 38-inch inseam may need an extra-long monorail; confirm fit with the maker.
Look at the path for getting on, placing your feet, fastening straps and reaching the handle. If you have mobility limits, try the movement with suitable help before assuming a raised seat resolves access. Do not use the handle as an improvised support unless the maker permits it.
Check the stated user limit for the exact model and configuration. Concept2 reports 500 lb under its own test and 300 lb under EN 20957-7 testing; do not omit the second figure when comparing specifications. Merach's detailed 950 specification lists 158 kg. These test descriptions are not interchangeable assurances, and a capacity number does not establish personal suitability.
Learn the stroke before pulling harder
Concept2 recommends learning the fundamentals before pulling hard, with another person comparing your movement to its demonstration. The sequence is more useful than chasing a high number on the display.
- Catch: keep arms straight, head neutral and shoulders relaxed. Hinge forward from the hips; bring shins toward vertical only as comfortable, without passing perpendicular.
- Drive: press through the legs, then swing the trunk through upright, then add the arm pull. Keep the hands traveling straight.
- Finish: legs extended, a slight supported lean back, handle below the ribs and wrists relaxed and flat.
- Recovery: extend arms, hinge forward, then bend the knees after the hands clear them.
Do not turn a slight lean into an extreme backward swing. If you cannot repeat the movement comfortably, reduce the effort and get instruction rather than trying to fix it by increasing the setting.
Use the monitor to support a sensible routine
Compare whether you can read and operate the monitor from the seat. Check which information it displays without a phone, whether an app is optional and which features require a subscription. Decide whether you want simple self-directed sessions or connected classes before choosing a large screen.
Mayo Clinic describes a general adult goal of at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity weekly, or an equivalent mix, plus strength work at least twice weekly. That is a general activity goal, not a required first rowing session or proof that every stroke counts as moderate exercise.
Choose a starting routine appropriate to your current ability. Focus first on comfortable technique, and increase activity gradually with professional guidance if needed. Do not use a monitor's calorie estimate as a promised weight-loss result. A rower purchase alone does not establish that your whole exercise plan meets your needs.
Check maintenance and safety before buying
Read the maintenance section before deciding the machine is convenient to own. Compare access to the rail, chain or belt, rollers, tank and replacement parts. A tank or drive component adds a care task; a mat does not eliminate that task. For floor compatibility, see our equipment mat guide, and confirm the maker's surface requirements.
For the RowErg, the manual specifies a stable, level surface, a locked frame connection before use or moving, and keeping children, pets, fingers and clothing away from moving rollers. Pull straight with both hands, do not twist the chain or release the handle to snap back. Replace defective components or keep the machine out of use. It also warns against bolting the frame to the floor.
Mayo advises checking with a health professional before a new program if you have fitness concerns, have not exercised for a long time, or have chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis. Do not interpret low-impact advertising as clearance for a painful back, hip or knee. Get individual advice for symptoms instead of shortening the stroke and pushing through.
What to look for when you buy
Air rowing machine with adjustable airflow
Best for: People comparing an effort-driven flywheel system
A format to consider when you want the stroke and damper behavior described by an air-rower maker.
Watch out: Check the actual clearance and storage instructions; airflow settings are not a universal resistance scale.
See options on AmazonRowing machine with a raised seat
Best for: Shoppers who need to assess easier seat access
A higher seat gives another access option to compare with your own mobility needs.
Watch out: It does not establish a longer rail or guarantee safe transfers.
See options on AmazonFolding water and magnetic rowing machine
Best for: People considering combined systems and reduced storage length
Offers a different control and storage format to evaluate for your room.
Watch out: Verify the exact folding method, power needs and tank care; do not assume upright storage.
See options on AmazonLong exercise equipment mat
Best for: Floors where the rower maker permits a compatible mat
An accessory to assess alongside the machine's footprint and flooring requirements.
Watch out: Check dimensions and material; no mat guarantees a rower will never shift.

- Is water resistance better than air?
- Neither label decides fit, space or suitability. Compare how the actual model adjusts, what maintenance it needs and how you will store it.
- How do I row in the correct order?
- Drive with legs, then trunk, then arms. Recover with arms, then trunk, then legs. Learn from the maker's demonstration or an instructor before adding effort.
- Can I store a rower upright?
- Only if its maker permits it. Concept2 warns against standing the assembled RowErg on end. Follow your exact model's storage instructions.
- Is a rower safe for back pain?
- This guide cannot establish that. Ask a health professional about your symptoms and movement limits rather than treating good-form or low-impact language as a guarantee.
