Compare magnetic rowers by control, reach and room fit
We research products from makers' specs and health sources; we do not run hands-on tests. Links to Amazon may earn us a commission at no cost to you. How this works.
- Sunny Health & Fitness SF-RW522016. Best for: A extended published rail fit and folding configuration. See options on Amazon
- XTERRA ERG180. Best for: A shorter operating footprint with a battery console. See options on Amazon
Compare the actual machines, not just the magnetic label
This page compares two manually adjusted magnetic rowers. Neither is a pick on our wider rowing machine guide, which discusses Concept2 and Merach examples and the broader choice of resistance systems. Here the buying question is which simple magnetic machine fits your space and reach.
Sunny lists an 81.7 by 19.9 by 28.5 inch operating size for SF-RW522016, a 53.4 inch rail and 48.4 inch rail inseam. XTERRA lists 68.3 by 21.3 by 28.5 inches for ERG180 and a recommended user height range of 5 feet 1 inch to 6 feet 6 inches.
Inseam and total height are different measurements. Do not treat the two maker fit statements as interchangeable charts. Confirm the actual seat travel with the maker if you are near a published limit or if reaching the footplates is difficult.
| Model | Size, in. | User limit |
|---|---|---|
| Sunny | 81.7 × 19.9 × 28.5 | 250 lb |
| ERG180 | 68.3 × 21.3 × 28.5 | 300 lb |
Manual resistance does not mean identical resistance
Each maker lists eight manual magnetic levels. XTERRA identifies a tension knob and a magnetic flywheel. Sunny also identifies a magnetic tension system. A matching count of settings does not establish a matching force, stroke feel or training progression.
Our buying preference is a control you can comfortably locate and adjust without an awkward reach. Compare the knob location, handle path and display position in the exact model instructions. If frequent changes during a session matter, inspect how the control works before assuming all magnetic machines adjust from the handle.
We have not measured resistance curves, maximum effort, noise or stroke smoothness. Maker descriptions such as quiet are not comparative sound readings. If noise or a particular training demand is decisive, obtain a demonstration or a return arrangement appropriate to that uncertainty.
Use the operating area and the required clearance
A machine footprint is only part of the space needed to use it. Mark the published length and width on the floor, then use the manual’s clearance instructions. Sunny’s model manual specifies at least two feet of free space around the machine. Leave room for the seat and handle movement and for getting on and off. A photograph beside a sofa cannot establish that your room works.
Compare the route into the room and the place where the machine will be kept. A shorter overall machine is not automatically a shorter comfortable stroke, and a longer rail does not by itself establish enough space around your body. Check both the equipment fit and your access.
If the rower must move regularly, rehearse the route with its published size in mind. Consider doorways, steps and where the handle or rail will pass. Wheels do not eliminate lifting or the need to keep other people clear while moving equipment.
Check the seat and user limits separately
Sunny lists an eleven inch seat height and a 250 pound maximum user weight. XTERRA lists a 300 pound maximum. These are model specifications, not a statement that the machine suits every person within the limit. The foot position and ability to sit, secure your feet and stand back up still matter.
Ask for help assessing access if that movement is difficult. A low seat can be a separate issue from leg length. Do not use an exercise handle as an improvised transfer aid unless the maker specifically permits it.
The ERG180 manual calls for proper athletic shoes and clothing and directs a user with dizziness, nausea, chest pain or other abnormal symptoms to stop and consult a physician. Do not interpret low impact marketing as personal medical clearance or a reason to continue through pain.
Distinguish a battery console from an app requirement
XTERRA’s console uses two AA batteries and does not require a wall connection. Its product page lists Bluetooth FTMS connectivity for third party apps, while noting that a tablet and third party subscriptions are not included. Decide whether you want optional app use or simply to read the console.
Sunny describes connection to its SunnyFit app and a device holder. Check the current compatible phone requirements and the exact metrics available on the unit before relying on an app feature. A phone holder is not a supplied phone or screen.
Treat displayed distance, energy and pulse information in its stated context. This guide establishes no cross machine calibration or clinical accuracy. If you need comparable training data across devices, confirm that independently rather than assuming all displays use the same calculation.
Storage and ownership affect the practical choice
The SF-RW522016 product page gives a folded size of 37.8 by 19.9 by 53.5 inches. XTERRA describes standing storage for ERG180, which is a different arrangement. Sunny’s manual warns that the seat glides down during folding. Follow the exact instructions for moving, securing and storing either machine rather than copying a method from another rower.
Check the applicable warranty and replacement part process before buying. Sunny’s model page lists a three year structural frame and 180 day other parts term. XTERRA lists one year for the frame and ninety days for parts. Those headline terms do not replace the full exclusions and purchase requirements.
Both exact model listings had New Amazon offers on October 17, 2026. Confirm the current seller, model suffix and delivery arrangements. The choice here is a documented fit and control decision, not a promised fitness outcome or a measured durability ranking.
What to look for when you buy
Sunny Health & Fitness SF-RW522016
Best for: A extended published rail fit and folding configuration
The maker lists a 53.4 inch rail, 48.4 inch rail inseam and manual magnetic levels.
Watch out: Check the 250 pound user limit, low seat and the full operating area; listing rail wording differs from the current maker specifications.

Best for: A shorter operating footprint with a battery console
XTERRA lists manual magnetic adjustment, a tension knob and a console powered by AA batteries.
Watch out: Third party app subscriptions and a tablet are separate. Standing storage is not a folding rail.

- Are eight levels on these rowers equivalent?
- The makers list the same number of settings, but no shared calibration is established. Compare the actual control and fit rather than treating the level numbers as equal effort.
- Does either need a wall outlet for the console?
- XTERRA explicitly lists two AA batteries and no plug in requirement. The Sunny model manual specifies two AAA batteries. Follow the supplied instructions and do not interchange battery types.
- Does a longer rail prove that a tall person fits?
- No. Compare the maker’s fit guidance with your reach and inseam. Total height, rail length and usable travel are different measurements.
- Can I store both the same way?
- No. Sunny lists a folding configuration; XTERRA describes standing storage. Follow the instructions for the exact model.
- Can a rower treat back or joint pain?
- This comparison cannot establish personal medical suitability. Obtain individual advice for pain or limitations and stop if exercise causes abnormal symptoms.
