Choose a Pilates reformer that fits your space and instruction

By the Life in Good Form editors. Updated 2026-10-17.

We research products from makers' specs and health sources; we do not run hands-on tests. Links to Amazon may earn us a commission at no cost to you. How this works.

Quick answerChoose the Merrithew At Home SPX ST11010 for a spring based home reformer with a box, platform extender and roll up pole. Choose the Stamina AeroPilates 287 55-4287 for a folding frame and elastic cord resistance. They are different systems, so match the equipment to your instruction before comparing accessories. Neither is a promise of a health or fitness result.

Compare the picks and what to watch out for

Two reformers with different resistance systems

We compared opened maker pages and model manuals. This is equipment selection, not an exercise program or a comparison of results. A spring count and a cord count are not interchangeable resistance measurements. If you attend classes, ask your instructor which adjustments and exercises transfer to the equipment you are considering.

Allow room around the machine

Merrithew lists its ST11010 as 26 inches wide and 96.5 inches long with the footbar down. Its carriage platform is 22 inches wide and 38.5 inches long, with a 10 inch height from the floor. The listed weight capacity is 250 pounds. These figures describe this home package, not the SPX Max or elevated versions.

Stamina lists the exact 55-4287 as 85.25 by 17.5 by 9 inches, with a 17.5 inch wide platform and a 300 pound weight limit. A shorter, lower frame may fit a different room, but the body dimensions alone do not establish safe access or exercise clearance.

Merrithew’s manual asks for at least two feet clear on either side and says the equipment is for indoor Pilates use. Stamina requires a solid, level surface and adequate access around the machine. Check the route into the room, where the equipment will stay and where it will go when stored. Do not arrange furniture from frame width alone.

Match cords or springs to the instruction

The Merrithew package manual lists five springs: four at 100 percent and one at 50 percent resistance. Those percentages describe its own spring package. They do not translate into a universal weight setting or a recommended exercise load. Ask a qualified instructor to explain the settings on your exact equipment.

Stamina’s 287 uses three elastic bungee cords. Its manual warns that the tension cords contain natural rubber latex. If latex is a concern, this is a material restriction to resolve before choosing the model. The number of cords does not establish equivalence to a studio spring combination.

The useful buying question is whether your planned instruction fits the machine. Do not assume a routine shown on a tower, a different footbar or a studio reformer can be copied unchanged. Our Pilates ring and Pilates socks guides concern separate accessories; they do not replace equipment instruction.

Check what the package actually includes

The ST11010 maker manual lists the reformer, a box with footstrap, padded platform extender, metal roll up pole, double loop straps, springs and spring covers. Its exact maker page identifies ASIN B004FGT0TM. Do not assume a separate vertical stand or tower comes with that package.

The Amazon title for Stamina B01FMODVAE mentions a cardio rebounder, but Stamina’s exact 55-4287 page says the rebounder is sold separately. Its included items list the reformer, instructional DVDs and a wall chart. Confirm the actual seller package in writing if the rebounder determines your order; this guide does not count it as included.

Keep the model suffix and package identity visible when comparing carts. Stamina now also has A and B suffixed documents. This comparison uses the exact 55-4287 page and its matching manual rather than silently substituting the current 55-4287B assembly instructions.

Storage and upkeep are part of the decision

Stamina’s exact page describes a folding frame with wheels. Folding is a storage feature, not a reason to leave it where children can reach moving parts. Its manual says to keep children away during folding and unfolding, and to keep hands clear of pinch points. Plan a place to store it before buying.

The ST11010 should not be confused with the separate package that includes a vertical stand. Obtain the storage instructions for the exact package rather than trying to stand a standard reformer upright. If you need frequent room changes, ask how the equipment is moved and what must be secured first.

Merrithew’s manual schedules spring replacement every 24 months and spring clips every 12 months, or earlier as needed. Stamina calls for inspection of worn or loose components before use. Obtain replacement part availability and the full maintenance instructions when comparing ownership requirements. Neither machine is a buy and forget item.

Arrange instruction before using a home reformer

Merrithew says inexperienced or first time users should use the equipment under a trained professional’s supervision. Both manuals advise consulting a physician before starting an exercise program. A home label does not remove the need to learn safe setup, adjustment, mounting and dismounting.

Both manuals caution about moving parts and keeping children away. Stamina also warns against loose or dangling clothing and says its equipment is for one person at a time and consumer use only. Follow the complete supplied instructions; this guide does not reproduce an exercise sequence or select resistance settings.

On October 17, 2026 the checked New Merrithew offer was sold by Amazon itself, and the checked New Stamina offer by Haus Appeal. Seller and package contents can change. Review the exact model, seller return terms, warranty eligibility and the Stamina bundle conflict before ordering. A home reformer is not rehabilitation equipment selected for a particular medical need.

When to talk to a doctor: Consult a physician before beginning an exercise program, and obtain instruction for the exact reformer. Follow the complete maker manual and keep clear of moving parts. This guide does not select exercise loads or promise results.

Questions people ask

Are three cords the same as three springs?
No universal equivalence is established. These makers describe different resistance systems. Use instruction for the exact equipment instead of translating a class setting by counting attachments.
Does the AeroPilates 287 include a rebounder?
The checked Amazon title mentions one, but Stamina’s exact 55-4287 page says it is sold separately. Confirm the seller package before ordering if that accessory matters.
Can the standard At Home SPX be stored vertically?
Do not infer that from its name. Merrithew sells a separate package with a vertical stand. Follow the exact standard package instructions and ask the maker before planning upright storage.
Can I use the frame size as the room size?
No. Merrithew asks for at least two feet clear on either side, and Stamina requires adequate access around the machine. Exercise and access space extend beyond the frame.
Can a beginner start without instruction?
Merrithew says inexperienced or first time users should have a trained professional supervising. Arrange suitable instruction and follow the full manual before use.
