Mini Pilates ball: how to choose and use one

By the Life in Good Form editors. Updated 2026-10-15.

We research products from makers' specs and health sources; we do not run hands-on tests. Links to Amazon may earn us a commission at no cost to you. How this works.

Quick answerA mini Pilates ball is a small, soft inflatable ball, usually 8 to 9 inches across, used in Pilates, barre and core work. You squeeze it between the knees, put it behind your back for support, or use it under your hips or hands. It is different from a large stability ball you sit on. Look at size, how firmly you can inflate it, the material and the weight rating. For example, Sunny Health & Fitness lists a 9 inch PVC ball rated to 330 lb, and Bala lists an 8 inch non-weighted ball.

Mini Pilates ball vs stability ball

A mini Pilates ball is small enough to hold in your hands or squeeze between your knees. A stability ball is the large ball you sit or lie on, sized to your height. They do different jobs, and many people use both.

Bala says its Pilates ball is designed to help improve core strength and balance and to aid rehabilitation, and notes that it is not a weighted product. Sunny describes its 9 inch ball for yoga, Pilates, barre, ballet, physical therapy and pregnancy exercises.

How firm to inflate it

Mini balls are meant to be soft enough to squeeze. Bala says you can inflate its ball more for more support, or fill it halfway to activate more muscles.

Do not inflate past the maker's stated size. Sunny's ball inflates with an included tube, so you can add or let out air to change firmness.

What Pilates research shows

The ball is a prop; the evidence is for Pilates as a whole. A 2026 systematic review of 12 studies in about 540 adult women found structured Pilates programs improved body mass index and sit-and-reach flexibility, but found no significant pooled effects on body fat percentage, waist size, lean mass, handgrip strength or vertical jump. The authors called Pilates safe and effective for selected outcomes but urged caution because the studies varied.

Pilates is light to moderate exercise. A separate review estimated a typical session at about 3.0 METs in its most reliable analysis, based on very low to low certainty evidence. That makes it a good complement to, not a replacement for, harder aerobic work.

The women's review also reported, in its narrative synthesis, possible added benefits for muscular strength, endurance, balance, functional abilities and breathing measures. In the energy review, shorter rests between sets and exercises, of 60 seconds or less, were linked with higher metabolic intensity, so the pace of a class changes how hard it works you.
