Choose a walking boot with your injury care team
We research products from makers' specs and health sources; we do not run hands-on tests. Links to Amazon may earn us a commission at no cost to you. How this works.
- Aircast AirSelect Standard 01EF-L, Large. Best for: Replacing a clinician approved AirSelect Standard in its prescribed Large size. See options on Amazon
- Össur Rebound Air Walker B-242900004, Large. Best for: Replacing a clinician approved full height Rebound Air Walker in Large. See options on Amazon
Start with the injury plan, not a shoe purchase
Walking boots are used after an injury or surgery. Cambridge University Hospitals says the care team should explain how long to wear the boot, whether you can put weight through it, and when it can be removed for sleep, bathing or exercises. Have that plan before shopping. An online product comparison cannot decide whether an injury needs a boot, which height it needs or whether a removable device is appropriate.
Tell the clinician whether you are replacing an existing boot or being fitted for the first time. Bring the old model name, size label and any prescribed accessories to the discussion. If the prescribed model is unavailable, ask about the actual substitute rather than assuming any tall grey boot will do the same job.
Keep the distinction between a device choice and a treatment decision clear. This page compares identified products and fit information. It does not diagnose a fracture, choose a rehabilitation schedule or recommend increasing walking because the boot feels comfortable.
Compare the exact models
| Choice | Model | Air system |
|---|---|---|
| Aircast | 01EF-L | Separate cells |
| Össur | B-242900004 | Linked cells |
Enovis lists AirSelect Standard with an integrated inflation system and independently adjustable distal aircells. Össur describes linked medial and lateral bladders with a single inflation point. Those are different control arrangements, so request a demonstration of the exact boot you receive.
The comparison does not establish that one control system treats your injury better. Choose within your care team’s recommendation, considering whether you can comfortably reach and operate the controls. A familiar brand name is not a reason to transfer instructions from an older boot or from another model in the same range.
Read each Large size chart separately
For AirSelect Standard 01EF-L, Enovis lists US men’s shoe sizes 10 to 13 and women’s 11 to 15. The Össur catalogue lists Large B-242900004 for US men’s 10.5 to 12.5 and women’s 12 to 14. These figures are maker ranges, not an instruction to choose a size without fitting.
A person near a size boundary should have the care team check the actual fit. Record the size system as well as the number: a US women’s figure is not the same label as a US men’s figure. If you use a different country’s shoe sizing, have the supplier resolve that against the exact maker chart.
Do not choose by Large alone. Confirm the full product code in the order details and on the supplied package. These examples are standard height boots; the Rebound Low Top uses a different code. A stock photograph or a shortened listing title is not enough to establish the prescribed version.
Ask for an air control and skin check demonstration
Both maker instructions warn against overinflation. Aircast also warns that incorrect inflation can irritate skin, especially with diabetic neuropathy, and says not to use the device if the wearer cannot feel sensations. Össur advises close professional monitoring for vascular disease, neuropathy or sensitive skin. Raise those conditions before buying.
Ask the fitter to demonstrate the inflation and release controls and to explain what a correctly fitted boot should feel like. Do not assume more pressure means a better fit. If you cannot operate the controls or communicate discomfort, have the care team decide how the device will be managed.
Össur says to contact a healthcare professional for pain, skin irritation, excessive pressure, an unusual reaction or loss of device function. Follow the specific instructions supplied with your boot and the care plan for your injury. Do not trim a shell or add wedges based on this shopping guide.
Plan cleaning and replacement parts before ordering
The AirSelect Standard instructions specify hand washing and air drying the foam liner. The Össur instructions also call for hand washing the liner with mild detergent, rinsing and air drying, and prohibit machine washing or tumble drying. Arrange cleaning around the removal instructions your clinical team gives you.
When ordering a replacement, distinguish the complete walker from a liner, strap kit or cover. Össur lists replacement softgoods separately from the boot, and Enovis separately lists Standard replacement liner and strap parts. A similar looking accessory listing is not a complete boot.
Full current warranty terms and seller eligibility were not verified for this comparison. Confirm those terms before ordering. A short warranty line in a listing does not settle which defects, region or seller are covered.
Make the final check with your clinician
Write down the approved model, height, size, accessories and weight bearing plan. Check those details against the actual order, then ask for fitting help if the supplied item differs. Do not replace a prescribed walker with a generic brace on the strength of a similar photograph.
For mobility planning, our knee scooter guide compares a different aid. Ask your clinician whether that type of aid fits your restrictions. A walking cane is another separate device, not an automatic substitute for prescribed support.
Check the seller, condition and exact package again before ordering. These named examples were checked as new offers, but the search links can show other sizes or accessories. Match the product code and the prescribed size each time.
What to look for when you buy
Aircast AirSelect Standard 01EF-L, Large
Best for: Replacing a clinician approved AirSelect Standard in its prescribed Large size
The Enovis ordering table names 01EF-L. AirSelect Standard has separate adjustable distal aircells and an integrated inflation system; it is different from the Elite and Short versions.
Watch out: Do not transfer the Large size range from another brand. The maker warns against overinflation and use when the wearer cannot feel sensations. Ask your care team about suitability before ordering.

Best for: Replacing a clinician approved full height Rebound Air Walker in Large
The Össur catalogue names B-242900004 as the standard Large. Its linked air bladders use a single inflation point, with an integrated pump and release valve.
Watch out: This is the standard full height model, not the Low Top B-242900064. The maker advises professional monitoring for people with neuropathy, vascular disease or sensitive skin.

- Does a walking boot mean I can walk on the injury?
- No. Your clinical team must specify whether you can bear weight. The word walking in the product name does not establish that permission.
- Is Large the same in both brands?
- No. The documented Large shoe size ranges differ. Use the exact maker chart and have the actual fit checked.
- Can I choose Short instead of Standard?
- Ask the prescribing clinician. Height and model are part of the device choice; the names do not establish interchangeability.
- Should I inflate it as much as possible?
- No. Both makers warn against overinflation. Ask the fitter to demonstrate the correct adjustment for your boot.
- Can I sleep without the boot?
- Follow your injury care plan. Cambridge University Hospitals says the care team should tell you when the boot can be removed, including at night.
