Squat stand vs power rack
A power rack is a four-post cage you step inside, with safeties on both sides. A squat stand uses two uprights joined by a base, so it takes less room but gives you fewer places to attach safety arms. Titan describes its T-3 tall stand as delivering the durability of its T-3 power rack in a space-efficient design.
Choose a stand if floor space is tight and you will add spotter arms. Choose a full rack if you lift heavy alone often and want the most catch options.

Specs that matter
- Height and ceiling. Tall stands with pull-up bars need overhead room. Titan's T-3 tall stand has an 89 inch maximum pull-up bar height, and Titan also sells a shorter T-3 version.
- Upright size. Upright size decides which attachments fit, so stay within one maker's system when you can. Titan's T-3 uses 2 x 3 inch uprights; the TITAN Series uses 3 x 3 inch.
- Hole spacing. The T-3 tall stand uses Westside spacing through the bench and clean pull zones, 2 inch spacing above and below, and 6 inch side hole spacing. The TITAN Series has numbered, laser-cut holes.
- Capacity. Count the bar, plates and attachments. Titan rates the T-3 tall stand at 1,000 lb.
- Anchoring. Titan says the TITAN Series can be bolted down for extra stability and has rubber feet.
- J-hooks. Titan's T-3 hooks are UHMW-lined; the TITAN Series comes with two sandwich J-hooks.
Spotter arms and attachments
J-hooks only hold the bar at the start and end of a set. To catch a missed rep, add spotter arms made for your stand's upright size. Titan sells T-3 Series Spotter Arms for its T-3 stand, along with barbell holders, a battle rope anchor and a rack-mounted landmine.
Set the spotter arms just below the lowest point of your squat or below your chest for bench press, with the bench centered between the uprights. Pair the stand with a flat weight bench or an adjustable bench for pressing.
Independent stands
Some squat stands are two separate uprights with no shared base. Many are sold as adjustable, portable pairs, but they lack the connecting base of stands like Titan's T-3 tall model. If you buy separate stands, check the maker's weight capacity, base size and whether spotter arms are offered, and keep both stands set to the same height.
Safe squatting at home
A study of 15,348 emergency department cases from resistance training found dropped-equipment injuries in 12.10% of men and 18.50% of women, and crush injuries in 3.10% of men and 2.20% of women. The authors say training on set-up and lift execution is critical. A separate analysis of 3,105 barbell-related head and neck injuries from 2014 to 2023 found that 17.5% happened at home.
- Assemble with every bolt and follow the manual.
- Set J-hooks so you can unrack the bar without rising onto your toes.
- Use spotter arms or a spotter on every heavy set.
- Load and unload plates evenly so the stand does not tip.
- Use collars and clear the floor around the stand.
