Flat weight bench: how to choose a solid one for home

Quick answerA flat weight bench is a fixed, non-adjustable bench for presses, rows, step-ups and other basic moves. Compare height, base design, weight capacity, pad width and footprint. As examples, REP lists its four-leg FB-3000 at 40 lbs, 18 inches tall and rated for 700 lbs, and its tripod-base FB-5000 competition bench at 16.9 inches tall, 62 lbs and rated for 1,000 lbs. If you also want incline pressing, an adjustable bench is the better fit.

Flat bench or adjustable bench?

A flat bench has no moving parts, so there is nothing to set or lock between sets. That makes it a simple choice for flat bench press, dumbbell rows, hip thrusts and step-ups. The CDC says adults need muscle-strengthening activity on 2 or more days a week that works all major muscle groups, and a flat bench supports many of those moves.

If you want incline or decline pressing, see our adjustable weight bench guide instead. For barbell pressing at home, pair the bench with a power rack.

What the base design changes

Four legs. REP says the FB-3000's wide, four-legged frame adds stability for exercises like step-ups and split squats. Grooved rubber feet help keep it from sliding and protect floors.

Tripod base. REP says the FB-5000's tripod foot design keeps the legs out of the way of your foot placement when you set up to bench press, which helps with leg drive.

Pick the four-leg style if you use the bench for many different moves, and the tripod style if barbell bench press is your main lift.

Height, pad and capacity

Storage and care

REP says the FB-3000 works with its wall-mounted bench hanger, which mounts into studs or concrete with 16 inch spaced holes and is less than 4 inches deep, so the bench can hang off the floor. Foldable flat benches are another space-saving form sold for small rooms.

To level a back pad, REP suggests holding the bench down on one side, loosening the bolts on that side, then tightening until the pad sits level and secure. For REP's CleanGrip pads, it recommends a mild dish detergent with water and a sponge or cloth, not paper towels.

Safe use at home

A study of 15,348 emergency department cases from resistance training found pressing-related injuries in 7.20% of cases among men and 3.30% among women, and dropped-equipment injuries in 12.10% of men and 18.50% of women. The authors say training on set-up and lift execution is critical to reduce these injuries.

When to talk to a doctor: If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, a hernia, or a back, shoulder or neck injury, talk to your doctor before heavy pressing. Stop and get checked if you feel sharp pain, numbness or chest discomfort while lifting.

Questions people ask

Is a flat bench enough for a home gym?
For flat presses, rows, hip thrusts and step-ups, yes. Choose an adjustable bench if you want incline pressing.
How tall is a flat bench?
It varies by model. REP lists 18 in for the FB-3000 and 16.9 in for its IPF-height FB-5000.
What weight capacity do I need?
Your body weight plus the heaviest load. REP rates the FB-3000 at 700 lbs and the FB-5000 at 1,000 lbs.
Three legs or four legs?
REP says four legs add stability for step-ups and split squats, while a tripod base keeps legs clear of your feet when pressing.
How do I fix a pad that is not level?
REP suggests holding one side down, loosening that side's bolts, then tightening until the pad is level.
