Choose a running armband that fits your phone and arm
We research products from makers' specs and health sources; we do not run hands-on tests. Links to Amazon may earn us a commission at no cost to you. How this works.

Two approaches to carrying your phone
| Model | Choose for | Main limit |
|---|---|---|
| Tune Belt AB91 | Measured phone pocket | Check case depth |
| ArmPod Sumo | Zip storage and belt use | Confirm device fit |
The first decision is whether you want only the phone or also a place for small essentials. The AB91 suits a buyer happy with a close-fitting phone pocket. The Sumo is a candidate for someone who wants separate storage and the option of moving the holder to a belt. These recommendations describe layouts; they are not a ranking of comfort, durability or bounce.
Before shopping, write down what must travel with the phone: its case, a key, a card and any wired headphone connection. Then check that the chosen holder accommodates that actual combination. A photograph with a bare phone does not answer whether your loaded setup fits.
Tune Belt AB91: measure the case as well
Tune Belt publishes a maximum device length of 6.4 inches and a maximum device circumference of 7.5 inches for the AB91. Its Device Fit Guide says to measure with the case on if you plan to keep using the case. It defines device circumference using width and depth, not screen diagonal. This distinction matters when a protective case makes a familiar phone name a different fit.
Use the maker's guide rather than assuming that every phone with a similar screen size belongs in the same holder. Length alone is not enough, and the AB91 and AB92 are different sizes. Do not force a phone into a pocket that is already at its limit with the case removed.
Our buying preference is to keep the daily setup practical. If you would have to remove a case every time you run, decide whether that extra step is acceptable before ordering. If it is not, choose around the cased dimensions from the beginning.
Amphipod Sumo: storage with another wearing option
Amphipod describes the ArmPod SmartView Sumo with a clear front panel, a zippered main pocket and a separated compartment for small essentials. Its removable armband lets the holder slide onto a compatible belt vertically or horizontally. The maker lists a belt width of 1.5 to 2 inches. That is a mounting requirement, not the size of the phone pocket.
The Reflective Burst model is identified as 249-R1 on the maker page. Select that exact version if its reflective front and strap detailing are part of your decision. Other ArmPod names and plain color versions should not inherit every detail from this listing.
The useful distinction is flexibility about where to carry it. If the armband position does not work for your preferred clothing, a compatible belt gives another configuration to evaluate. It does not establish that the pouch fits every phone, so confirm your device and case dimensions before choosing it.
Check arm fit before tightening it more
Tune Belt lists the AB91 for biceps measuring 9 to 16 inches and points buyers who need more room toward its EX3 extender. Clothing changes the circumference the strap needs to cover. Measure where the holder will actually sit, over the layer you expect to wear, rather than borrowing a shirt-size label.
When you receive an armband, check it with the normal loaded phone before committing to a run: can you fasten it properly, move the arm freely and reach the screen without pulling the holder out of position? Treat repeated sliding, rubbing or a need to keep tightening as a fit problem to resolve. Do not plan to tolerate numbness or discomfort to keep a phone attached.
This is an editorial fit checklist, not evidence that either product will slip or cause symptoms. We have not measured strap stretch or tested either holder while running. A different carrying position may suit you better than either armband.
Screen access and reflective details have limits
Both makers describe screen access through a clear panel. That feature is useful to compare, but it does not guarantee every gesture, screen protector or phone-unlock method will work in your chosen configuration. Check the functions you need while stationary, with the phone installed as you intend to carry it.
Amphipod's separate visibility gear guide specifically names the ArmPod SmartView Sumo Reflective Burst version and explains its reflective detail. That supports identifying the version, not a claim that an armband replaces a visibility vest or a light. We make no visibility-distance claim for either holder.
For the same reason, do not turn general protection wording into a waterproof rating. Neither recommendation here is based on a verified submersion rating. If you require documented waterproof protection, resolve that requirement separately before choosing a phone carrier. A clear panel and a zip are not proof of a sealed enclosure.
Choose for your daily setup
Choose the AB91 if your cased device matches its fit guide and a phone-focused holder is what you want. Choose the Sumo Reflective Burst if its separated pocket and compatible belt mounting solve a real carrying need. Skip either if the arm position, closure or loaded fit does not work for you.
We did not verify warranty terms for either product. Check current terms and the selected seller's return conditions before ordering; a maker's direct-store policy may not describe an Amazon purchase. The shopping links search the exact product names so you can confirm the version before choosing an offer.
If you are also choosing audio gear, our sport earbuds guide is a separate comparison. Keep your phone-carrying decision focused on fit, useful access and secure storage rather than assuming that extra features improve your run.
What to look for when you buy
Tune Belt Sport Armband AB91
Best for: A phone-focused pouch chosen from measured device dimensions
Tune Belt publishes a device fit guide naming AB91, plus an arm-size range on the product page. It also provides earphone cord management.
Watch out: Measure the phone with its case and check the maker's depth-based fit method. This is not a verified waterproof pouch; warranty terms were not verified.
See options on AmazonAmphipod ArmPod SmartView Sumo Reflective Burst 249-R1
Best for: Zip storage for small essentials and a compatible belt option
Amphipod documents a separate internal compartment, clear screen panel and removable arm strap. Its gear guide also identifies the Reflective Burst version.
Watch out: Confirm your particular device fits. Belt compatibility does not describe phone dimensions, and reflective detailing is not complete road-safety equipment. Warranty terms were not verified.
See options on AmazonQuestions people ask
- Should I measure my phone with the case on?
- Yes, if you will keep the case on during a run. Tune Belt explicitly asks buyers to measure the device with its case. Screen diagonal alone does not describe pocket fit.
- What does device circumference mean?
- Tune Belt's fit guide uses the width and depth of the device. Follow its illustrated measuring method; this is different from measuring the circumference of your arm.
- Can I wear the Sumo on a belt?
- Amphipod says the armband detaches and the holder can slide onto a compatible 1.5 to 2 inch belt vertically or horizontally.
- Are these armbands waterproof?
- We did not verify a waterproof or submersion rating for either. Do not treat a clear panel, fabric or zip as proof that a phone is protected from heavy rain or immersion.
- Which armband will never bounce?
- We cannot promise that for either product. Check your loaded phone, case, strap fit and clothing together. These picks are based on maker documents rather than comparative running tests.
