Wrap, band or binder?

|---|---|---|
| Postpartum belly wrap | Elastic wrap around belly, waist and hips | Belly Bandit Original: 9 in tall, adjusts up to 9 in |
| Soft fabric wrap | Wrap marketed as soft for C-section recovery | Belly Bandit Bamboo: viscose from bamboo, latex-free |
| Short-torso wrap | Wrap sold as best for shorter torsos | Belly Bandit Shortie: six-panel design |
| Abdominal binder | Wide medical-style band sold for post-surgery and postpartum use | Widely sold in small to large sizes |
Belly Bandit details are from its product pages. A pregnancy belly band is a different product; see our maternity belly band guide for support during pregnancy.
What makers claim and what research shows
Belly Bandit says its Original wrap applies 360 degrees of compression around the belly, waist and hips, and lists benefits such as supporting posture during breastfeeding and helping you get back to daily activities more quickly. These are maker claims.
Independent research points to exercise, not wraps, for separated stomach muscles. A 2026 meta-analysis of nine randomized trials with 450 participants found structured exercise programs reduced the gap between the stomach muscles by an average of 8.05 mm compared with no treatment or standard care. Programs started less than 3 months after birth reduced it more. That improvement in the gap did not translate into better scores on a disability scale.
A 2025 review of 34 trials found abdominal exercises reduced the gap compared with no intervention, but rated the evidence as very low certainty.
Choosing a wrap
- Size. Belly Bandit says to measure around the belly at the largest part, usually around the belly button. If you are between sizes, it suggests sizing up and adding an extender.
- Adjustability. Your belly changes in the weeks after birth. Belly Bandit's Original wrap adjusts up to 9 inches so you can tighten it as you size down.
- Material. Belly Bandit lists its Original wrap as 80% polyester and 20% latex-free spandex. It describes its bamboo version as soft for C-section recovery.
- Height. Taller wraps cover more of the torso; Belly Bandit lists the Original at 9 inches tall and offers a Shortie for shorter torsos.
- Latex. If you have a latex allergy, confirm the wrap is latex-free, as Belly Bandit lists for its wraps.
After a C-section
A cesarean birth is surgery, so your recovery plan comes first. ACOG says that if you had a cesarean birth or complications, you should ask your ob-gyn when it is safe to begin exercising again. Ask the same question about wearing a wrap over or near your incision, especially in the first weeks.
- Do not wear a wrap that rubs or presses on the incision.
- If your provider says a wrap is fine, a soft fabric such as a bamboo-based wrap may feel gentler.
- Stop and call your provider if the incision becomes red, warm, more painful or starts to drain.
Getting back to exercise
ACOG says that after a healthy pregnancy and normal vaginal delivery, it is usually safe to begin exercising a few days after giving birth, or as soon as you feel ready. It recommends muscle-strengthening activities on at least 2 days a week, including yoga, Pilates and Kegel exercises for the pelvic floor.
Because the research shows exercise is what changes the abdominal gap, think of a wrap as comfort and support while you rebuild strength, not a replacement for it. Ask your provider which exercises suit you if you notice a gap between your stomach muscles.
How to wear one comfortably
- Wear it snug but not so tight that it is hard to breathe or causes pain.
- Take it off if you feel numbness, tingling or skin irritation.
- Follow the maker's care instructions; Belly Bandit says to machine wash its Original wrap cold, not bleach it, and lay it flat to dry.
- Keep moving: walking and gentle exercise matter more than how many hours you wear a wrap.

- Does a postpartum belly wrap fix diastasis recti?

- When can I start wearing a belly wrap after a C-section?
- Ask your ob-gyn. ACOG advises checking with your ob-gyn about exercise after a cesarean birth.
- How do I size a postpartum wrap?
- Belly Bandit says to measure the largest part of your belly, usually at the belly button, and size up if between sizes.
