Gummy labels are often inaccurate
| Finding | Source |
|---|---|
| 22 of 25 gummy products mislabeled; 74% to 347% of labeled amount | 2023 study, cited by NCCIH |
| Most products had 1.2 to 1.7 times the labeled amount | Same study |
| One product had no detectable melatonin | Same study |
| Most of 31 melatonin supplements did not match labels; 26% contained serotonin | 2017 study, cited by NCCIH |
That means a gummy labeled 5 mg could deliver much more. Higher doses keep melatonin levels up longer and can cause next-day drowsiness.
How many melatonin gummies should you take?
Follow the label and do not exceed it. Nature Made's 5 mg Extra Strength gummy, for example, directs adults to chew 1 gummy one hour before bedtime and not to exceed 2 gummies daily. Some brands use 2 gummies per serving, so check the serving size before counting milligrams.
Lower is often better. Our melatonin dose guide explains that doses of 0.3 mg to 1 mg can produce natural-like nighttime levels, while higher doses keep levels up longer.
Can you overdose on melatonin gummies?
Taking too many can cause problems, especially for children. The CDC report found:
- About 11,000 emergency visits from 2019 to 2022 for unsupervised melatonin ingestion by children 5 and younger, 7% of all their visits for unsupervised medication ingestion.
- Gummies were the most documented form (47.3%), and more than a third of visits involved access to 10 or more gummies or tablets.
- Most did not need hospitalization (93.5%), and a poison center study found 98% of pediatric exposures caused minimal or no effects.
- Bottles were the main source. Melatonin products do not require child-resistant packaging.
For adults, NCCIH lists mild side effects such as headache, dizziness, nausea and sleepiness. If someone takes far more than the label, call Poison Control or seek care.
Why gummy accidents are rising
The CDC report notes that melatonin use by U.S. adults quintupled, from 0.4% in 1999 to 2000 to 2.1% in 2017 to 2018. Over a similar period, poison center calls about children's melatonin exposures rose 530% from 2012 to 2021. In the 2019 to 2022 emergency visits, about half (52.4%) involved children aged 3 to 5, and nearly half (47.7%) involved adult or family products rather than children's formulas. Adult products kept at home are a common source.
Store gummies like medicine
- Out of reach and sight. The CDC urges keeping all medicines and supplements, including gummies, out of children's reach and sight.
- Child-resistant packaging. The CDC says choosing products with child-resistant packaging might be advisable in homes with young children.
- Close the bottle. About three quarters of documented cases involved bottles that children opened or that were not properly closed.
- Flavored products. The CDC notes gummies and chewables may appeal to young children.
Safety for adults
- Driving. Nature Made warns not to drive or operate machinery within eight hours of taking its gummy or if you feel groggy.
- Pregnancy and medicines. Nature Made says not to use without a physician's advice if pregnant, trying to become pregnant, nursing, taking medications or with chronic conditions.
- Epilepsy and blood thinners. NCCIH says these require medical supervision.
- Ongoing sleep problems. Gummies are for occasional sleeplessness; see a doctor if trouble continues.
How to choose melatonin gummies
- Lower dose per gummy so you can start small.
- Serving size. Check whether 1 or 2 gummies make a serving.
- Testing. Given label accuracy problems, choose brands that state independent testing.
- Child-resistant cap if children live in or visit your home.
- Blends. Gummies with magnesium, chamomile or ashwagandha add ingredients with their own cautions.
