VIM & VIGR lists its wide-calf knee-high sizes for calves measuring 17–21 inches. The three wide-calf sizes share that calf range; their US shoe-size ranges differ. Choose the row that matches both measurements, then confirm the exact fabric, style and compression level.
This guide explains the maker’s published sizing and care information. It does not diagnose swelling or choose a medical compression prescription. If compression has been prescribed, keep the pressure and garment type your clinician specified.
Use the wide-calf row and US shoe size together
The table below reproduces the numerical ranges in VIM & VIGR’s sizing guide (vimvigr.com). These are that maker’s knee-high sock ranges, not a universal compression-sock chart.
On a narrow screen, scroll the table sideways to see all four columns.
| Wide-calf size | Women’s US shoes | Men’s US shoes | Calf circumference |
|---|---|---|---|
| S/M | 5–8 | 3.5–6.5 | 17–21 in. |
| M/L | 8.5–11.5 | 7–10 | 17–21 in. |
| L/XL | 12–15 | 10.5–13.5 | 17–21 in. |
The maker recommends measuring the bare calf at its widest point in the morning. Write down the measurement and your usual shoe size before comparing rows. Do not choose L/XL merely because you need more calf room: within this chart, it has the same wide-calf range as S/M and M/L.
A chart match is a screening step
For example, a 19-inch calf and women’s US size 9 shoes fall within the listed Wide Calf M/L ranges. That is a chart-based starting point, not a guarantee of fit or a recommendation for a particular pressure. The same calf measurement paired with women’s US size 7 shoes points to a different row.
If either measurement falls outside the published range, or your two legs need different fits, ask the maker or a qualified fitter before ordering. Do not try to compensate for the wrong foot size by stretching the sock further or selecting a stronger compression level.
Our general wide-calf guide explains broader fitting options. Use any additional measurements on the chart supplied with your exact socks, and ask the maker about conflicting charts. Do not import another brand’s size labels.
Check the actual style, fabric and pressure
Before ordering, confirm all four fields: wide-calf size, pressure in mmHg, fabric and selected style. A listing for standard M/L is not automatically the wide-calf version. A familiar photograph or color name does not confirm the size selection.
The maker’s Solid Moisture-Wick Nylon page (vimvigr.com) includes a wide-calf size chart and separate compression selections. Treat it as an example of the fields to verify. It does not establish that every color, pressure and size is currently offered by every retailer.
Keep the sizing decision separate from medical suitability. A calf measurement does not tell you which pressure to use, and this guide does not recommend increasing pressure to stop slipping. If you need help deciding whether compression is appropriate, ask your healthcare professional.
Plan for washing, drying and a careful first fit
VIM & VIGR’s care guide (vimvigr.com) recommends cold water and a mild detergent, without bleach or fabric softener. It advises against tumble drying. Check the care label for your exact pair and allow drying time before its next use; do not assume ordinary hot-wash-and-dryer sock care applies.
Putting on the sock is part of checking its fit. Kent Community Health NHS guidance (kentcht.nhs.uk) advises positioning the foot correctly and gradually drawing a below-knee stocking up the leg. It says to remove stockings immediately and contact a healthcare professional if pins and needles or numbness develops. Do not treat those symptoms as something to endure while the sock “breaks in.” Follow your clinician’s individual wearing instructions.
Questions before buying
Does a larger wide-calf size give me a larger calf range?
Not in the chart shown here: all three wide-calf rows list 17–21 inches. Their shoe-size ranges change.
