Why lifters wear sleeves to squat
Sleeves keep the knees warm between sets and give a snug, supported feel under the bar. Rehband describes its 7 mm sleeves as giving the highest compression, warmth and stability for heavy loads, and says its RX 7mm's shape is meant to keep compression at the bottom of a squat. Tight sleeves can also add a little spring out of the hole; Rehband notes that competitive lifters between sizes often size down for more rebound.
Sleeves are not braces. They do not stabilize an injured ligament, and they do not replace good technique or sensible loading. The IPF rule itself says sleeve construction may not provide any appreciable support or rebound to the knees, which is why federations limit thickness and design.
5 mm or 7 mm?
| Thickness | Rehband's suggested use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 3 mm | Running, court sports, cycling | Too light for heavy squats |
| 5 mm | CrossFit, Hyrox, HIIT, mixed training | Less warmth and rebound than 7 mm |
| 7 mm | Heavy squats, Olympic lifting, powerlifting | Hot, stiff, hard to put on; poor for long workouts |
Rehband describes its 7 mm sleeve as made for short, heavy sessions, and calls 5 mm more comfortable in long workouts. If squats are one part of a varied program, 5 mm is often the more comfortable choice. For a general overview of sleeve types, see our knee sleeves guide.
What the IPF allows in competition
The IPF Technical Rulebook effective 1 March 2026 sets these limits for knee sleeves:
- A single ply of neoprene, or mostly neoprene with one non-supportive fabric layer over it; stitched seams are allowed
- No more than 7 mm thick and no more than 30 cm long
- Continuous cylinders, with no holes, straps, hook-and-loop fasteners, drawstrings or padding
- Worn centered over the knee joint, not touching socks or the suit (other than a long-legged suit)
- Allowed over a long-legged singlet but not under it
- Never worn together with knee wraps
- Only from makers on the IPF approved list
Other federations set their own rules, so check yours before you buy for a meet.
Sizing and getting them on
- Measure where the maker says. Rehband sizes its RX 7mm by calf circumference, and other makers use knee or thigh measurements.
- Snug, not numbing. Rehband's guide says a sleeve should feel noticeably tighter than a sock without cutting off circulation or pinching behind the knee. If your foot tingles, it is too small.
- Putting them on. Tight 7 mm sleeves are easier to pull on if you fold them in half, slide them up to the knee, then unroll the top over the thigh.
- Take them off between sessions. Rehband suggests removing sleeves during long rest periods so skin can breathe.
Material and care
Squat sleeves are mostly neoprene blends. Rehband lists the foam on its RX 7mm as 70% SBR and 30% neoprene under a polyamide cover, sold as a pair. For care, Rehband says to machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, or at up to 40 degrees for the RX 7mm, use a laundry bag, and air dry only. Washing often after sweaty sessions keeps them fresher. If neoprene gives you an itchy rash, see our neoprene knee sleeve guide for the allergy question.
What to look for when you buy
7 mm neoprene knee sleeves, pair
Best for: Heavy squats and powerlifting training
Rehband describes 7 mm as its highest compression, warmth and stability option for heavy loads.
Watch out: Too hot and stiff for long or high-rep sessions. For a meet, confirm the brand is on your federation's approved list.

- Should I get 5 mm or 7 mm knee sleeves for squats?
- For heavy, low-rep squats, 7 mm. For mixed training with more reps and movement, 5 mm is usually more comfortable.
- How tight should knee sleeves be for squatting?
- Tighter than a sock, but never tight enough to cause tingling in the foot or pinching behind the knee, per Rehband's fit guide.
- Are knee sleeves allowed in powerlifting?
- Yes, within limits. The IPF allows neoprene sleeves up to 7 mm thick and 30 cm long from approved makers, and not combined with wraps.
- Do knee sleeves help you squat more?
- Tight sleeves may add a little warmth and rebound, which is why lifters sometimes size down. The IPF rule says sleeves should not provide appreciable support or rebound.
