What king size means in a weighted blanket
Weighted blankets are usually sized to the top of the mattress rather than hanging far over the sides, because draped fill adds weight without pressure on you. Examples from makers' own pages:
| Maker and size | Dimensions | Weight listed |
|---|---|---|
| Baloo King | 80 x 87 in | 20 or 25 lb (its size guide lists 25 lb only) |
| Baloo Full/Queen | 60 x 80 in | 15 or 20 lb |
| Gravity bed-size | 90 x 90 in | 35 lb, for queen and king beds |
Baloo says its king matches the top of a king or California king mattress, and that its Full/Queen size is not intended for sharing. Check the dimensions against your mattress before ordering, since king names vary between brands.
Why a king feels lighter than its number
Spread over its listed size, Baloo's 25 lb king works out to roughly half a pound per square foot. Its 15 lb Full/Queen, which is meant for one person, comes to a similar figure, under half a pound per square foot. But on a shared king, each person sits under only part of the blanket, so each feels a share of the total, not all 25 lbs.
That is why the Sleep Foundation's 10% of body weight rule of thumb does not translate simply to shared blankets. A 25 lb king is not the same as each partner using a 25 lb single blanket. For a deeper look at how size changes pressure, see our heaviest weighted blanket guide.
Sharing with a partner
Research has barely looked at couples. A commentary on a weighted blanket trial in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine raised the question of how weighted blankets affect bed partners as one of the open issues. Practical points to talk through:
- Different preferences. If one of you wants firm pressure and the other none, one king blanket will please neither.
- Heat. A big weighted blanket traps warmth across the whole bed. Hot sleepers may be better under their own lighter blanket; see cooling weighted blankets.
- Movement. A heavy shared blanket shifts when one person turns, and can pull off the other.
- Safety. Each person must be able to get out from under it alone. Never share one with a child.
| Setup | Suits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One king weighted blanket | Couples who both like weight and similar warmth | Less pressure per person; hard to wash |
| Two single-person blankets | Couples with different weight or heat needs | Two blankets to manage; gap in the middle |
| One single blanket plus regular bedding | Only one partner wants weight | The bed looks less uniform |
Washing a king size weighted blanket
Size is the biggest practical drawback. Baloo says to check your washer's capacity because a blanket is heavier when wet, and recommends a commercial washer for its king. It also advises cold water, a gentle cycle, one blanket at a time, low heat in the dryer, and no bleach, ironing or dry cleaning. A model with a removable cover lets you wash the cover at home and the insert far less often. Our full guide: how to wash a weighted blanket.
Who should not use one
The Sleep Foundation advises talking to a doctor before using a weighted blanket if you have low blood pressure, a respiratory disorder, type 2 diabetes or obstructive sleep apnea, and warns that one that is too heavy can restrict airflow. It considers weighted blankets generally safe for children only from age 3 and at least 50 lbs, so a heavy king blanket is not a place for a child to sleep, even beside a parent.

- What size is a king weighted blanket?
- It varies by maker. Baloo's king is 80 by 87 inches and Gravity's bed-size blanket is 90 by 90 inches, both meant to cover the top of a king mattress.
- How heavy should a king size weighted blanket be?
- Many king blankets are 25 to 35 lbs. Because the weight is spread over a big area and shared, each person feels only part of it.
- Can two people share a weighted blanket?
- Yes, if both like the feel and can each get out from under it alone. Couples with different needs often do better with two smaller blankets.
- Can you wash a king weighted blanket at home?
- Often not. Baloo recommends a commercial washer for its king; a removable cover makes home care easier.
