Quick answerHyaluronic acid (HA) supplements are capsules or liquids sold for skin moisture and joint comfort. A 12-week trial of 120 mg of oral HA a day in 40 adults found better wrinkle scores, skin moisture and elasticity than placebo. A 2024 systematic review of 11 studies with 597 patients found improvements in osteoarthritis or low back pain in 9 of them, at doses of 30 mg to 300 mg a day, with rare, mild side effects. The trials are small, so evidence is promising but limited. Capsules like NOW Foods' give 100 mg per capsule.

What hyaluronic acid is

Hyaluronan, or hyaluronic acid, is present in all connective tissues and organs, including the skin and joint fluid. A 2014 review in Nutrition Journal notes that the skin contains about half of the body's HA, where it helps hold moisture.

HA is used as a medicine, cosmetic and food, and the review says it became a popular dietary supplement in Japan for skin moisture. It also reports that swallowed HA is absorbed and partly distributed to the skin. NOW Foods' label, for example, lists hyaluronic acid from sodium hyaluronate.

What the research shows

UseEvidence
Dry skin, wrinklesA small placebo-controlled trial showed improvement over 8 to 12 weeks
Osteoarthritis and low back pain9 of 11 studies showed less pain or better function
Low back painOne study; more research needed

Skin. In a 2021 double-blind trial in Nutrients, 40 healthy Asian men and women aged 35 to 64 took 120 mg of HA or placebo daily for 12 weeks. The HA group had better wrinkle assessments, skin water content, water loss and elasticity, with gains seen from 8 weeks.

Joints. A 2024 systematic review in the Mediterranean Journal of Rheumatology found 11 studies with 597 patients, mostly with osteoarthritis. Follow-up ranged from 4 weeks to 12 months, and doses from 30 mg to 300 mg a day. Nine studies saw improvements in pain, stiffness or function, and adverse effects were rare and mild. The authors called oral HA a safe and effective option for osteoarthritis, but said more studies are needed for low back pain.

Many of these studies are small, and some products combine HA with other ingredients, so results may not apply to every capsule.
