Heated mattress pad: a buyer's guide to warm, safe sleep

By the Life in Good Form editors. Updated 2026-10-12.

We research products from makers' specs and health sources; we do not run hands-on tests. Links to Amazon may earn us a commission at no cost to you. How this works.

Quick answerA heated mattress pad lies under your fitted sheet and warms the bed from below. For a queen or king, dual controls let each sleeper pick their own setting. The safest way to use one is to preheat the bed, then sleep on low or switch it off. Skip it if you have diabetes, poor circulation or reduced feeling in your legs, and check any pad you own against current recalls.

Compare the picks and what to watch out for

Heated mattress pad vs heating pad vs electric blanket

These three are easy to mix up, and they do different jobs.

ProductWhat it doesUsed for
Heated mattress padWarms the whole sleeping surface from belowA warm bed in a cold room
Electric blanketWarms you from aboveSame goal, on top of you
Heating padTargets one sore area for short sessionsAches and cramps, while awake

A heated mattress pad is bedding for comfort. It is not a pain treatment you sleep on. If you want heat for a sore back, a heating pad for back pain used while awake is the right tool. If you like the feel of both warmth and weight, see the heated weighted blanket guide.

What to look for when you buy

Setting it up the right way

  1. Lay the pad flat on the mattress with the label facing up and the connectors at the foot of the bed, as the Easy Home manual directs.
  2. Put your fitted sheet over it.
  3. Do not tuck in the wired area, fold it or let it bunch while it is on. The manual warns this can cause excessive heating.
  4. Keep cords out from between the mattress and box spring, and away from furniture.
  5. Never use safety pins to hold it in place. Pins can damage the wiring.
  6. Do not use it on pull-out or fold-up beds, recliners or furniture on wheels, which the manual also rules out.

Who should not use a heated mattress pad

The maker's manual is clear on this point. Do not use the pad with an infant, a child, or a person who is incapacitated, immobile or medicated, and do not use it if you have diabetes, are insensitive to heat or have poor circulation.

The reason is simple: you need to feel when you are too hot and be able to move away. The CDC warns people with diabetes to be careful with electric blankets, heating pads and foot warmers because they may not recognize when the temperature is too high and can burn their skin.

If you want a warmer bed and fall into one of these groups, warm the bed and switch the pad off before you get in, or choose non-electric layers such as a wool mattress topper.

Recalls: check before you buy or keep using

Heated bedding is recalled from time to time. In September 2026, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of about 195,000 JKMAX heated blankets and heating pads sold on Amazon because internal heating wires can overheat. The company had 577 reports of smoking, melting or burning, including 53 burn injuries.

Before buying, search the brand and model at cpsc.gov. Stop using any heated bedding that smells hot, shows scorch marks, has a damaged cord, or runs hot in one spot.

Washing and care

Always follow your own pad's label. As one example, the Easy Home manual allows hand washing or a machine wash on slow agitation, then drying on low heat for five minutes only or line drying. It says not to dry-clean, iron or use a wringer, and never to plug the pad in while it is still damp. Detach the controllers before washing.

What to look for when you buy

Queen or king heated mattress pad with dual controls

Best for: Couples who run hot and cold differently

Each controller heats its own side, so one person can sleep warm while the other leaves their side off.

Watch out: Both controllers must be connected to heat both halves.

Heated mattress pad with preheat and auto shut-off

Best for: People who want a warm bed at lights-out, not all night

Preheat warms the bed before you get in, and a clear shut-off time stops it running indefinitely.

Watch out: Read the manual for the exact shut-off time, as it varies by model.

Deep pocket fitted heated mattress pad

Best for: Thick mattresses or beds with a topper

A deep fitted skirt keeps the wired area flat, which matters because folding or bunching can cause excessive heating.

Watch out: Measure mattress plus topper height before you order.

Twin or twin XL heated mattress pad with single control

Best for: Solo sleepers, guest rooms and dorm beds

One controller is simpler to use when only one person sleeps in the bed.

Watch out: Not suitable for children or anyone who cannot feel or react to heat.

When to talk to a doctor: Do not use a heated mattress pad if you have diabetes, neuropathy, poor circulation or any reduced feeling in your skin, or for a baby, child, or anyone who cannot move off it alone. If you are pregnant, ask your provider before sleeping on added heat, and see a doctor for any burn or skin change.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to sleep on a heated mattress pad all night?
Follow your manual. Many people preheat and then sleep on the lowest setting or turn it off. People with diabetes, poor circulation or reduced feeling should not use one.
Is a heated mattress pad better than an electric blanket?
Neither is clearly better. A pad warms from below and stays in place, while a blanket warms from above. Choose by where you feel cold.
Can I put a heated mattress pad on a memory foam mattress?
Check your mattress and pad manuals first, since makers set their own rules. Keep the pad flat and unbunched either way.
Do heated mattress pads turn off by themselves?
Many do. The Easy Home pad shuts off after 10 hours of continuous use, but the time varies by model.
Can I wash a heated mattress pad?
Usually yes, with the controllers removed. One manual allows a gentle wash, then five minutes on low in the dryer or line drying, and says never to power it up while damp.
