Quick answerDenture cleaner tablets fizz in water to help clean dentures, partials and other dental appliances. Efferdent's directions are to drop one tablet into very warm, not hot, water, soak the appliance, then remove and rinse it thoroughly after 3 minutes. Never put the tablets or solution in your mouth, and note that Efferdent's tablets contain persulfates, which it warns may cause allergic reactions. The American Dental Association (ADA) also says to brush dentures daily with a soft brush and non-abrasive cleanser, and to keep them covered in water when not worn.

Why dentures need daily cleaning

The ADA's MouthHealthy site says that, like your teeth, dentures should be brushed daily to remove food particles and plaque. It recommends rinsing dentures before brushing to remove loose food or debris, then using a soft bristle toothbrush and a non-abrasive cleanser to gently brush all the surfaces.

Polident says brushing and soaking dentures daily helps prevent permanent stains from developing, and advises using denture cleansing tablets rather than toothpaste and bleach, which it says can scratch the denture surface and cause discoloration.

How to use a cleanser tablet

Efferdent gives these directions for its Plus Mint tablets:

Polident says to use one tablet per set of dentures, upper and lower, or per individual denture, and to use its tablets as instructed. Soak times differ by product, so always follow your own package.

Efferdent Plus Mint3 minutesFor full-plate dentures, partials, plastic retainers and aligners; 44, 90 and 126 count
Polident 3 Minute Antibacterial3 minutesFor full and partial dentures, retainers, aligners and mouthguards

Details are from Efferdent and Polident product pages. Polident says its tablet kills 99.9% of odor-causing bacteria in just 3 minutes in laboratory tests; treat that as a maker claim.

Both brands sell other versions too. Efferdent lists Complete Clean and Deep Clean tablets alongside Plus Mint, and Polident lists Overnight Whitening and Smokers cleansers. Polident's FAQ says its range runs from soaking solutions to creams and cleansers designed specifically for smokers. Polident describes its 3 Minute tablet's active power bubbles as tough on dirt but gentle on your appliance when used as directed, and says to use it daily as directed. Whichever you choose, match the product to your appliance type and read the label first.

Safety warnings to know

Efferdent's label warnings are clear:

Rinse dentures thoroughly after soaking, as the directions say, before putting them back in. If your gums, lips or mouth become irritated, stop using the product and talk to your dentist or doctor.

Storing dentures and other care

The ADA says that when you are not wearing your dentures, put them in a safe place covered in water to keep them from warping. It also suggests asking your dentist to recommend cleansers and adhesives, and looking for products with the ADA Seal of Acceptance, which have been evaluated for safety and effectiveness.

If you use a denture adhesive, the ADA says to read the instructions and use it exactly as directed. Be sure to schedule regular dental checkups, too.

Comfort and mouth care

Denture wearers still need to look after the mouth itself. If your mouth often feels dry under dentures, see our dry mouth spray guide. For any natural teeth you still have, see our electric toothbrush guide and dental floss guide, and for fresher breath, our tongue scraper guide.

See your dentist if dentures feel loose, rub or cause sore spots, rather than trying to fix the fit yourself.
