Why low seats are hard to leave
After hip surgery, MedlinePlus advises sitting in a firm chair with a straight back and armrests, avoiding soft chairs, rocking chairs, stools and sofas, and avoiding chairs that are too low; your hips should be higher than your knees, and a pillow or cushion can help.
If you still want to use your sofa, a couch cane adds the armrest-style push point that soft furniture lacks. A lift chair is another option if rising is a daily struggle.
Types of stand assist
| Type | How it works | Vive example |
|---|---|---|
| Under-cushion couch rail | Frame slides under or wraps around the seat cushion; padded handrails rise beside you | Stand Assist: 300 lb, under 3 lb, no tools |
| Freestanding frame | Stands on the floor next to any seat; no attachment | Multi-Room Stand Assist: three handles, 300 lb |
| Handheld stand assist handle | A helper holds one end while you grip the other | Stand Assist Handle: 250 lb, 14.75 in long |
Details are from Vive's product pages. Vive says its Multi-Room frame needs no installation or furniture attachment and can be moved between rooms.
Fit checks for an under-cushion rail
- Seat size. Vive says its Stand Assist frame adjusts in width from 19.25 to 22.25 inches and in depth from 24 to 27 inches, covering most upholstered seats.
- Handle height. Its push-button handles adjust from 9 to 12 inches; set them where your hands land naturally when you sit forward.
- Cushion type. Vive says the open frame fits under removable cushions and wraps around fixed ones on sofas, loveseats and recliners.
- Weight limit. Check the rating exceeds your body weight; Vive lists 300 pounds.
- Stability. Push firmly on the rail before the first real use to make sure it does not shift.
Vive describes the handrails as foam padded and says the whole unit weighs under 3 pounds, so it can be moved between rooms and adjusted from day to day without tools.
Using a stand assist handle with a helper
Vive says its Stand Assist Handle is for helping someone rise from a seated position or exit a vehicle, that both people need enough strength to grip it firmly throughout, and that it should be used with the elbows slightly bent. It is not designed to help someone up who has fallen; Vive says it is for people in a seated position only. Clean it with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
Safer sit-to-stand
- Slide forward first. MedlinePlus advises sliding toward the edge of the chair before standing.
- Push with your hands. Use the chair arms, rail, walker or crutches for support, MedlinePlus says, and do not try to rock yourself out of the chair.
- Feet set. Plant both feet flat and slightly apart before you push.
- Pause before walking. Stand for a moment to get your balance, then reach for your cane or walker.
While seated after hip surgery, MedlinePlus also advises keeping your feet about 6 inches apart, not crossing your legs, keeping knees and feet pointed straight ahead, and not sitting in the same position for more than 30 to 40 minutes at a time. Getting up regularly with good technique is part of recovery.
For walking once you are up, see our walking cane guide and rollator walker guide.
When a rail is not enough
If you cannot stand even with a rail, or you feel dizzy or unsteady when you rise, talk with your provider or a physical therapist. They can check strength and balance, suggest exercises and recommend the right equipment, which might be a higher, firmer chair, a lift chair or help from a caregiver. For transfers between seats without standing, see our transfer board guide.
