Bath pillow guide: suction vs weighted cushions, fit and mold-free care
We research products from makers' specs and health sources; we do not run hands-on tests. Links to Amazon may earn us a commission at no cost to you. How this works.
- Vive Bath Pillow. Best for: Head and neck support in a standard tub or hot tub. See options on Amazon
- BadeSofa Back Bath Pillow. Best for: Full back support in larger tubs. See options on Amazon
Suction headrest or weighted back cushion
| Style | How it stays put | Maker example |
|---|---|---|
| Suction-cup headrest | Suction cups on smooth, non-textured surfaces | Vive: two hinged panels, 2 inch foam, seven suction cups |
| Weighted back cushion | Sand weights at the bottom keep it from floating | BadeSofa: back pillows in small, medium and large sizes |
| Floating foot or seat cushion | Floats, or is weighted for seats | BadeSofa: foot pillow floats; seat pillow does not slip or float |
Details are from Vive and BadeSofa product pages. BadeSofa says its floating foot pillow can rest under the legs or behind the knees, or support the arms while you read, and should go in the tub tag side up. It says the foot pillow's inner cushion is not machine washable; soak it regularly in mild soapy water, rinse it with clear water and brush it clean with a soft brush, while the cover can go in the washer.
Getting the fit right
- Suction headrest size. Vive's pillow is 14 inches long, with a 4 inch top panel that wraps the tub rim and an 8 inch lower panel; Vive says both panels can sit vertically in a straight-back tub and that it holds on curved tubs.
- Weighted cushion size. BadeSofa lists a small back pillow at 21 by 18 inches that fits any bathtub, a medium at 21 by 21 inches for most tubs, and a large at 29 by 21 inches for wide, high tubs.
- Surface. Vive says its suction cups grip fiberglass, acrylic and ceramic but need a non-textured surface; clean and dry the spot before attaching.
- Hot tubs. Vive says its pillow is safe for jacuzzis and hot tubs.
Keeping a bath pillow mold-free
Vive says its pillow is fully sealed so moisture cannot reach the foam, with a PVC exterior resistant to mold and mildew; wipe it with a damp cloth and mild cleaner as needed. BadeSofa's care advice for its seat pillow is to rinse off soap and oils after every use, flip it 2 to 3 times to drain, leave it in the tub to dry, and machine wash the inner pillow every 6 to 8 uses on a delicate cycle without tumble drying.
BadeSofa says its cushions work with most bath foams, bath bombs and oils but that strongly colored products may discolor the fabric. Dry the pillow fully before storing it.
Bath safety basics
- Non-slip footing. MedlinePlus suggests non-slip suction mats or silicone decals in the tub and a non-skid mat outside it.
- Water temperature. Set the water heater to no more than 120 degrees F (49 degrees C) to prevent burns, MedlinePlus says.
- Grab bars. Grab bars should be secured to the wall vertically or horizontally; towel racks cannot hold your weight.
- Getting out. Drain the tub before you stand, and use a grab bar or a bath lift if rising from the tub floor is hard.
For help getting in and out, see our bath lift guide and shower bench guide.
Making the most of a soak
A bath pillow is about comfort: it lets you lean back without a hard edge pressing your neck. Pair it with a dim light, a timer so you do not doze off, and a drink of water within reach. Get in and out slowly if warm water makes you lightheaded. For bath additives, see our magnesium bath flakes guide and shower steamers guide.
When to skip the long bath
Follow your surgeon's bathing instructions after any surgery or with an open wound, since some people are told to avoid sitting in a bathtub for a time. If you get dizzy or lightheaded in hot water, keep baths short and ask your provider about safe bath temperatures and times. Never use a bath pillow to prop someone who cannot keep their own head above water.
