The short version
| Rectangular (flat) | Round (cylindrical) | |
|---|---|---|
| Height | Lower, about 5 to 6 inches in the examples below | Higher, about 9 inches in the examples below |
| Stability | Flat top and bottom; does not roll | Curved; can roll unless wedged |
| Best for | Lying along it, child's pose, forward folds | Chest openers, under the knees, sitting height |
| Feel under the spine | Broad, even support | Narrower ridge of support |
| Who it suits | First bolster, most bodies | Second bolster, or people who want more lift |
Real dimensions from two makers
To keep this concrete, here are the published sizes for the rectangular and round versions from two makers.
| Bolster | Dimensions | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Hugger Mugger Standard (rectangular) | 11 x 25 x 6 in | 5.0 lb |
| Hugger Mugger Round | 9 x 27 x 9 in | 6.0 lb |
| Manduka Equa Rectangular | 28 x 11.75 x 5 in | 2.2 lb |
| Manduka Equa Round | 27 x 9 x 9 in | 2.34 lb |
Two patterns stand out. Within each brand, the round bolster is 3 to 4 inches taller than the rectangular one. And fill matters more than shape for weight: the cotton-filled Hugger Mugger bolsters weigh more than double the fiber-filled Manduka ones.
When rectangular is the better choice
Hugger Mugger describes its rectangular shape as offering a stable surface, with a flat top and bottom, and calls it a staple for restorative and yin yoga. Manduka says its rectangular bolster is ideal for restorative, yin and relaxation-focused practice and can support the back, chest or legs.
- Supported child's pose, with your torso resting on the bolster.
- Reclining along the bolster in a gentle chest opener when you want less of a backbend.
- Seated forward folds, resting your chest or forehead on it.
- Side-lying support, where a round bolster would roll away.
Many people also find the broader, lower surface easier on a stiff lower back, since it does not push them into a deep arch.
When round is the better choice
Hugger Mugger suggests its round bolster for chest-opening poses, gentle backbends and elevating the hips in seated meditation, and says it fits under the knees. Manduka says the cylindrical shape gives even support along the spine, beneath the neck or under the knees.
- Under the knees when lying on your back, where the extra height takes pressure off the lower back.
- Crosswise under the shoulder blades for a stronger chest opener.
- As a meditation seat, to lift the hips above the knees.
- Under the ankles to raise the legs while resting.
The trade-off is that it rolls. Wedge it with a block or a folded blanket when you lie along it.
Making one bolster do both jobs
You can get a lot of range from a single rectangular bolster before buying a second shape.
- Stand it on its long edge. Turned on its side, a rectangular bolster is taller and narrower, closer to the lift of a round one. It is less stable this way, so use it under the knees rather than the spine.
- Add a blanket. A folded blanket on top adds height for a chest opener without changing the stable base.
- Use a block underneath one end. Raising the head end turns a flat bolster into an incline, which many people find easier on the lower back than a full backbend.
The reverse is harder. A round bolster cannot easily be made flat, which is another reason rectangular makes the better first purchase.
How to decide
- Buying one bolster? Rectangular. It covers more poses safely.
- Stiff upper back or rounded shoulders, and you want a stronger chest opener? Consider round, or a rectangular one with a folded blanket on top.
- Long legs or a long torso? Look at length; the examples above run 25 to 28 inches.
- Carrying it to class? Fill matters more than shape. Fiber-filled bolsters are far lighter.

What to look for when you buy
Rectangular yoga bolster, firm fill
Best for: A first bolster, and anyone who wants stable support for lying along it
Flat sides keep it still on the mat. Hugger Mugger's standard version is 11 x 25 x 6 inches; Manduka's rectangular is 28 x 11.75 x 5 inches.
Watch out: Lower height means less lift under the knees or chest.

- Is a round or rectangular bolster better for beginners?
- Rectangular. It is more stable, does not roll, and works for more poses.
- What is a round bolster used for?
- Lifting the knees when lying on your back, chest openers across the shoulder blades, and raising the hips when sitting to meditate.
- What size is a standard yoga bolster?
- The rectangular examples here are 25 to 28 inches long and 11 to 11.75 inches wide. Round examples are about 27 inches long and 9 inches across.
- Why does my round bolster keep rolling?
- Its curved base has only a narrow contact line with the floor. Wedge a block or a rolled blanket against each side, or switch to a rectangular bolster for poses where you lie along it.
- Can a rectangular bolster be used under the knees?
- Yes. It gives a lower lift than a round one; stand it on its side if you want more height.
