Why an overbed table helps
When recovering from surgery or spending long periods in bed or a recliner, MedlinePlus advises making sure you can reach everything you need without getting on your tiptoes or bending down low, and keeping things you use often close by. An overbed table puts meals, a phone, water, medicines and a book at a comfortable height, which cuts down on reaching and twisting.
It is also handy beside a hospital bed; see our home hospital bed guide and lift chair guide.
Compare two common designs
| Spec | Vive Overbed Table | Vive Compact Overbed Table |
|---|---|---|
| Height range | 28 to 39 inches | 28 to 47 inches |
| Tabletop | 30 by 15.5 inches, wood grain laminate | 24 by 16 inches, tilting composite |

Details are from Vive's product pages. Both have a small rim around the top, four swivel casters with locking column wheels, and work on the left or right side of a bed, couch or chair. Vive says neither tray swivels.
Measure before you buy
- Top height. Measure from the floor to just above your lap while sitting up in bed or in your chair, then check it falls inside the height range.
- Base clearance. Measure the gap under your bed frame or recliner; the base must slide under it. Vive's bases are 3 to 3.5 inches high.
- Base length. A longer base, like the 39 inch standard model, reaches further under a bed; a shorter one suits chairs and small rooms.
- Top size. A larger top holds a full meal tray; a smaller, tilting top suits reading or a laptop.
Weight limits and what not to put on it
Vive says its standard table holds up to 50 pounds and its compact table up to 22 pounds, with weight spread evenly to avoid damage, and that neither is suitable for televisions or desktop computers. Do not lean on an overbed table to stand up or steady yourself. It rolls, and it is not a grab bar or a walker. Use a properly installed rail or the mobility aid you were given instead.
Everyday safety
- Lock the wheels. Vive says to push the slide lock on the column wheels downward to lock them; do this before eating or working.
- Lock the height. On the standard table, the trip lever holds the tabletop height in place.
- Keep paths clear. Roll the table out of the way before getting up, so the base is not a trip hazard.
- Hot food and drinks. Keep them near the center of the top, inside the rim.
- Cleaning. Wipe the top after meals; Vive describes the compact top as water-resistant.
Setting up a bedside station
Vive says both tables assemble in minutes with illustrated instructions; check every bolt is tight before first use. Then build the rest of the station around the bed or chair. When getting a home ready for knee or hip surgery, MedlinePlus suggests setting up your bed on the first floor if you can, with a bed low enough that your feet touch the floor when you sit on the edge, and a bathroom or portable commode on the same floor. It also advises making sure you can get to your phone, placing a chair with a firm back in rooms you use, and planning well before surgery so you can test the setup.
Put the items you reach for most, such as water, glasses, the phone, the TV remote and any medicines, on the table, and keep the rest of the floor around the bed clear. Roll the table to the side when a caregiver needs room to help, and back again once you are settled.
