What oregano oil is
Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is a medicinal herb in the mint family (Lamiaceae). A 2021 review in the Iranian Journal of Pharmaceutical Research explains that its main active compounds are the essential oil, which is high in thymol and carvacrol, plus phenolic acids and flavonoids.
Capsules come in two main styles. Some contain oregano essential oil in a carrier, such as NOW Foods' softgels with olive oil. Others use a supercritical CO2 leaf extract; Gaia Herbs says this kind of extract contains all oil-soluble parts of the plant.
What the research shows
| Claim | What reviews describe |
|---|---|
| Kills bacteria and fungi | Strong activity in lab studies, including resistant strains |
| Prevents or treats infections in people | Not established |
| Carvacrol for liver, blood sugar, cancer | Mostly lab and animal findings |
| Gut or immune support | Marketing claim; not proven in people |
Antimicrobial activity. The 2021 review reports that oregano essential oil and its compounds were active against bacteria and fungi such as E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, including some multidrug-resistant strains. It describes how the compounds damage microbe membranes, block enzymes and stop biofilms from forming.
Carvacrol. A 2022 review in Food Science and Nutrition lists antioxidant, anticancer, blood sugar, heart, liver and antimicrobial properties for carvacrol. Much of this comes from lab and animal work, and those results do not prove the same effects in people taking capsules.
Bottom line: oregano oil shows real activity in the lab, but that is not proof that a capsule will prevent colds, fix gut problems or replace antibiotics.
How labels compare
- Oil softgels. NOW Foods' Oregano Oil gives 181 mg of oregano oil standardized to at least 55% carvacrol per softgel, plus small amounts of ginger and fennel oil, in an enteric-coated softgel. The label directs 1 softgel 1 to 3 times daily with food.
- CO2 extract capsules. Gaia Herbs' Oil of Oregano uses 230 mg of supercritical CO2 extract per capsule with at least 27 mg carvacrol and no more than 5 mg thymol. The label directs 1 capsule twice daily with meals for a suggested maximum of 2 to 4 weeks.
- Percent vs mg. Gaia Herbs notes that carvacrol in mg is easier to compare than a percentage, since extracts and carriers weigh different amounts.
- Blends. Many products add black seed oil, zinc or vitamin C. Check each ingredient amount.
Safety
- Take with food. Gaia Herbs advises taking oil of oregano with food to reduce stomach irritation, and both labels direct taking it with meals.
- Short courses. Gaia Herbs suggests a maximum of 2 to 4 weeks of use.
- Allergies. NOW Foods says not to take its product if you are allergic to oregano, fennel or ginger.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Both labels say not for use during pregnancy or nursing.
- Medicines and conditions. Both labels advise consulting a professional if you take medication or have a medical condition.
- Adults only. NOW Foods labels its product for adults only.
Infections need real care
Oregano oil is often promoted as a natural antibiotic. Lab results do not show it can treat an infection in your body. See a provider if you think you have an infection, and take prescribed antibiotics as directed. Do not give oregano oil capsules to children, who are outside the adult labels.
How to choose oregano oil capsules
- Carvacrol listed. Prefer labels that state carvacrol in mg or a percentage, so you know what you are getting.
- Form. Enteric-coated softgels and CO2 extract capsules are both sold; follow each label's directions.
- Single ingredient vs blend. Blends add other ingredients and cautions.
- Clear time limits. Labels that state how long to use the product, like Gaia Herbs' 2 to 4 weeks, are easier to follow safely.
- Third-party testing. Prefer brands that state quality testing.
