Nettle leaf: what the evidence supports and how to choose tea or capsules

Quick answerNettle (Urtica dioica, stinging nettle) leaf is sold as tea, loose leaf, capsules and tinctures, often for seasonal allergies, joints and general wellness. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) says evidence is lacking for allergies, small studies suggest help for arthritis and possibly blood sugar, and the root, not the leaf, is the part mainly studied for prostate symptoms. Rare side effects include low blood sugar and hormone-like effects, and animal studies suggest it may add to water pills and blood pressure drugs. Avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding unless your provider approves, and ask first if you take medicines.

What nettle leaf is

Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) is a perennial flowering plant native to Asia, Europe and North America. MSK notes that several compounds, including flavonoid glycosides, appear to contribute to its effects, although how it works is unclear.

Leaf and root are used differently. MSK says the root is widely used for an enlarged prostate (BPH), allergies, arthritis and inflammation, and is usually combined with saw palmetto or pygeum for BPH. Leaf products are commonly sold as tea and for seasonal or sinus support, such as Gaia Herbs Nettle Leaf, which it describes as traditionally used for sinus support.

What the research shows

UseWhat MSK reports
Seasonal allergiesEvidence lacking; lab studies only
ArthritisSmall trials support topical use; larger studies needed
Blood sugar in type 2 diabetesOne trial of a leaf extract; more study needed
Prostate symptoms (BPH)Positive results, mainly root combined with other herbs
Chest congestion, muscle spasmsEvidence lacking

Allergies. In lab studies, nettle extract blocked several steps in the allergy response, including histamine-1 receptor activity and prostaglandin formation. MSK says evidence is lacking that this helps people with allergies.

Arthritis. Limited clinical data suggest nettle may help osteoarthritis of the hip, knee and hand. Some of that research used nettle applied to the skin, and larger studies are needed.

Blood sugar. A randomized trial in people with advanced type 2 diabetes found improved blood sugar control with a nettle leaf extract. MSK says more study is needed. Do not use nettle in place of diabetes medicine.
