How the four socks score
Our spec score uses five checks from the makers’ own pages, weighted the same for every sock. All four clear our 7.0 floor for a pick. The method is at the bottom of the page.
Life in Good Form spec score out of 10, from each maker’s published text, read Oct 22, 2026. It is not a customer rating or a lab test.

You want merino wool for odor. Darn Tough is 48% merino.
Feetures’ Elite Light Cushion No Show Tab is the sock we’d hand most people who want dry feet on a run or at the gym. It scored 9.7, the top score here. It’s the only pick shaped for a left and a right foot, it comes in four sizes and four heights, and Feetures backs every pair with a lifetime guarantee.
The fabric is 96% nylon and 4% spandex. Feetures calls its wicking yarn iWick and says it pulls moisture away to keep feet cool and dry. There’s no cotton and no wool in it, so it’s a fully synthetic sock.
Fit is where it pulls ahead. Feetures shapes each sock for the right or the left foot, with a more natural toe box. A band of arch compression holds it in place, the toe has no seam, and a double-thick heel tab sits between your heel and the back of the shoe.
Feetures rates the cushion Light and calls it “just enough cushion.” The Elite Light Cushion line comes in four heights: the Tab on this page, an Invisible no-show, a Quarter and a Mini Crew. That’s the widest choice of heights here, tied with Swiftwick.
Sizing runs by shoe size. On Feetures’ chart a men’s 9 to 12 is a Large, and a women’s 7 to 9.5 is a Medium. Feetures suggests going up a size if you’re between two. Use our size finder before you order, because the same letter means a different shoe size at each brand.
Care is simple: machine wash cold or warm on a gentle cycle with mild soap, no bleach or fabric softener, and tumble dry low. Feetures adds that hanging or laying flat gives the best results. Its lifetime guarantee covers holes, thinning and stretching or shrinkage with a replacement pair.

You want padding underfoot. Balega has full-length cushion.
Swiftwick’s Aspire No Show is the thinnest, snuggest sock here. It scored 9.4. Swiftwick calls Aspire its ultra light line, with firm compression and minimum cushion, and pitches it for hot summer days. On Amazon it’s sold by Swiftwick itself.
The mix is 64% nylon, 32% olefin and 4% spandex, per Swiftwick’s product page. Olefin is the fiber Swiftwick builds its wicking around; its Amazon listing says olefin wicks moisture and dries quickly. It’s the only pick with olefin in it.
Firm compression here means the sock grips your foot snugly, with an arch band for support. Swiftwick doesn’t give it an mmHg rating, the number medical compression socks are sold by. For those, see our athletic compression socks guide.
Airflow is its other strength. The upper has channels that Swiftwick says add breathability to help keep feet cool, and its Amazon text names a mesh footbed for ventilation. Swiftwick says the Y-shaped heel moves with your foot without bunching or slipping. The No Show cuff has a small micro tab at the back.
Aspire comes in four sizes and four heights: No Show, Quarter Crew, Quarter Crew High and Crew. Swiftwick’s chart puts a men’s 10 to 11.5 in Large and a men’s 12 to 15 in X-Large. On that chart, a women’s size is about one number higher than the men’s size in the same sock.
Care is machine wash cold and tumble dry low, with no bleach and no iron. Swiftwick’s Lifetime Performance Guarantee says that if your socks wear out for any reason, it will replace them. Swiftwick says its socks are made in the USA.
The trade-off is cushion. Minimum cushion is the point of Aspire. On a long day in firm shoes you may want more under your feet.

You wear a men’s 7.5 or smaller. This sock starts at Medium, a men’s 8.
Darn Tough’s Run No Show Tab with Cushion is the merino pick. It scored 8.8. It’s 48% merino wool, the fiber the top answer in a Reddit r/BuyItForLife thread on moisture-wicking socks recommends, and Darn Tough says it’s unconditionally guaranteed for life.
The full mix is 48% merino wool, 48% nylon and 4% elastane, per Darn Tough’s product page. The Amazon listing says 55% nylon, 40% merino and 5% Lycra; we go by the maker. Darn Tough’s listing says the sock wicks moisture away from skin so you get “no more sweaty, stinky socks.”
Odor is the main reason to pick merino. Darn Tough’s own blog says sweat itself doesn’t smell, the bacteria do, and that socks which keep moisture moving help stop odor building up. It adds that the right socks keep moisture moving and fight bacteria buildup. That’s Darn Tough’s view; it doesn’t publish a test for it.
The cushion is terry loops underfoot and in the heel tab, in what Darn Tough calls its lowest profile, ultra-lightweight yarns. It adds arch support and a closed toe seam Darn Tough describes as ultra smooth and undetectable. Every pair is knit at Darn Tough’s mills in Vermont.
This sock uses men’s sizing in M, L and XL only. A men’s 8 to 9.5 is Medium, 10 to 12 is Large, and 12.5 to 14.5 is X-Large. On Darn Tough’s chart a women’s 10 to 11.5 fits the Medium. Smaller feet should look at Darn Tough’s women’s Run socks.
The cushioned Run line comes in three heights: No Show Tab, Quarter and Micro Crew. Wash cold on gentle, inside out, with no bleach, then tumble dry low or hang dry. Don’t dry clean it.
On Amazon it’s sold by Dearborn Supply, which is on Darn Tough’s published list of authorized Amazon sellers.

You want a lifetime guarantee or socks you can tumble dry. The Feetures has both.
Balega’s Hidden Comfort No Show is the most cushioned sock here. It scored 7.3. It’s the only pick sold by Amazon itself, and it has full-length cushioning. It scores lower than the others for two reasons: a 1-year warranty instead of a lifetime one, and hang-dry care.
The yarn is 84% recycled polyester, 14% nylon and 2% elastane. Balega calls its wicking yarn Drynamix and says the moisture management is built into the yarn, so it lasts the life of the sock and won’t wash out.
Balega rates the cushioning High. It runs the full length of the foot, protecting the toes, heel and sole, particularly around the toes, heel and bottom of the foot, per Balega. If your runs are long or your shoes are firm, that padding is the reason to pick it.
A deep heel pocket and a high heel tab keep it from slipping down into your shoe, a common annoyance Balega says can disrupt focus, and Balega says the tab also protects the Achilles from blisters. The toe has no seam, and large ventilation panels let air move through the sock. That’s three of our five fit and airflow features.
There are four sizes, S to XL. Balega’s chart puts a men’s 9.5 to 11.5 in Large and a men’s 12 to 14 in X-Large; for women, 8.5 to 10.5 is Medium. Hidden Comfort also comes as a Mini Crew and a Quarter, so three heights in all.
Balega says to machine wash cold and hang dry. That scores lower on our dryer check than socks you can tumble dry, and it’s worth knowing if you wash a week of running socks at once. Balega’s product page lists a 1-year warranty.

A moisture-wicking sock is made of fabric that pulls sweat away from your skin, in the words of the American Academy of Dermatology.
Look for the words
The AAD says to look for “moisture wicking” on the label, because not every polyester or nylon sock wicks.
Common fibers
The AAD names polyester, nylon and bamboo. Our picks add olefin (Swiftwick) and merino wool (Darn Tough).
Cotton holds sweat
Darn Tough’s blog says cotton absorbs sweat and hangs onto it instead of moving it. None of our picks has cotton.
It won’t stop sweat
Wicking moves sweat; it doesn’t stop your feet sweating. Shoes, changing socks and powder matter too.
So do moisture-wicking socks really work? They do what the label says: the fabric moves sweat off your skin instead of holding it there. That’s why the AAD lists them in its advice for sweaty feet, next to changing your socks often and letting shoes dry out between wears.
One detail trips people up. The AAD suggests breathable fabrics like cotton for clothing, but for feet it points to socks that wick. A cotton gym sock may feel soft, but on a long run it can stay damp. Each of our four picks lists its fiber mix, and none of them uses cotton.
What each sock is made of
Three of our picks are fully synthetic. One is half merino wool. Here’s each maker’s fiber mix.

If your feet smell by the end of the day, merino is the usual answer on forums, and it’s what the top answer in that r/BuyItForLife thread suggests, naming Darn Tough and Icebreaker. Darn Tough’s blog makes the same case. Neither is a lab test, so treat it as a strong habit among runners and hikers rather than a proven number.
If you mainly want dry feet on a run, a synthetic sock does that job and usually goes in the dryer. Feetures and Swiftwick both say tumble dry low. Merino from Darn Tough can go in on low too, which surprises a lot of people who expect wool to shrink.
Socks for sweaty and smelly feet
Socks are one part of the fix. Here’s what the American Academy of Dermatology suggests for feet that sweat a lot.
1
Change socks often
The AAD says to change shoes and socks often.
2
Rest your shoes
Avoid wearing the same shoes two days in a row, so they dry out.
3
Take shoes off
Slip them off when you can, to help prevent odor and irritation.
4
Pick the shoe
Natural materials like leather let air move, per the AAD.
5
Wear wicking socks
Look for the words “moisture wicking” on the label.
6
Add powder or insoles
Use insoles and foot powder that absorb wetness.
Our foot powder guide compares medicated, antifungal and talc-free powders if you want to add one.
Searching for socks for athlete’s foot? A sock won’t treat it. Our antifungal foot cream guide covers the over-the-counter creams. Dry socks and resting your shoes are part of the AAD’s general advice for feet that sweat.
Which sock size do you need?

From each maker’s size chart, read Oct 22, 2026. The Darn Tough sock on this page comes in M, L and XL only. Feetures suggests going up a size when you’re between two.
The gaps are bigger than they look. A men’s 9.5 is a Large at Balega but a Medium at Swiftwick and Darn Tough, and a Large at Feetures. A men’s 12 is an X-Large at Swiftwick and Balega, and a Large at Feetures and Darn Tough. A sock that’s too big bunches and rubs; too small and the heel slides down under your foot.

Feetures says its No Show Tab sits just below the ankle. Swiftwick says its No Show cuff sits below the ankle with minimal extension above the shoe. A tab at the heel, which all four have in some form, keeps the back of the shoe off your skin. Go taller for trail running, where dirt and grit get in, or for boots.
How much cushion?
Cushion is padding knitted into the sock. Thin socks fit closer; thick ones soften each step.
Each maker’s own cushion name, read Oct 22, 2026, ordered from thinnest to thickest. Makers don’t publish a common thickness number, so the bar lengths show order only.
Thin socks suit snug running shoes and hot days. Thick ones suit long walks, firm shoes or tired feet. If your shoes already feel tight, adding a high-cushion sock can make them tighter, so try the sock with the shoe before a long run.

A toe with no seam matters most if you get blisters or sore spots on top of your toes. A left and right shape helps the sock follow your foot without twisting. Mesh and vents let air move through the sock; they’re the airflow half of wicking. “Not named” means the maker doesn’t mention it, not that the sock can’t have it.

How to choose wicking socks
Check these five things before you order
1
Read the fiber line
Look for “moisture wicking” and no cotton.
2
Pick merino or synthetic
Merino for odor; synthetic for a thin, quick-drying sock.
Yes, for what they claim: the fabric moves sweat away from your skin. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends them for sweaty feet. They don’t stop sweating, so changing socks and letting shoes dry still matter.
What are moisture-wicking socks?
Socks made of fabric that pulls sweat off your skin, usually nylon, polyester, olefin or merino wool. The AAD says to look for the words “moisture wicking,” since not every polyester or nylon sock wicks.
What socks are best for moisture-wicking?
Our top pick is the Feetures Elite Light Cushion No Show Tab: 96% nylon, a left and right fit and a lifetime guarantee. Swiftwick Aspire is thinner, Darn Tough adds merino wool, and Balega has the most cushion.
What are the best socks for really sweaty feet?
A thin, wicking sock with airflow, like the Swiftwick Aspire with its mesh footbed, or merino from Darn Tough if odor is the problem. Pair them with the AAD’s tips: change socks often and rest your shoes.
Are cotton socks moisture-wicking?
Not usually. Darn Tough’s blog says cotton absorbs sweat and hangs onto it. The AAD points to socks labeled “moisture wicking” for sweaty feet. None of our four picks uses cotton.
Is merino wool or synthetic better for sweaty feet?
Both wick. Merino is the common pick for odor; synthetic socks tend to be thinner and three of ours can go in the dryer. Darn Tough’s merino blend can be tumble dried on low too.
What socks are best for smelly feet?
Merino wool is the usual answer, like the Darn Tough Run Cushion (48% merino). Darn Tough says sweat doesn’t smell but bacteria do, and socks that keep moisture moving help. Changing socks often helps too.
Do moisture-wicking socks help athlete’s foot?
They help keep feet dry, which is part of the AAD’s advice for sweaty feet, but a sock doesn’t treat athlete’s foot. See our antifungal foot cream guide for treatments.
What size socks should I get?
Go by each maker’s chart, not the letter. A men’s 9.5 is a Medium at Swiftwick and Darn Tough but a Large at Feetures and Balega. Our size finder shows all four.
Can you put moisture-wicking socks in the dryer?
Feetures, Swiftwick and Darn Tough say tumble dry low. Balega says hang dry. Skip fabric softener and bleach.
Are compression socks moisture-wicking?
Many are. Swiftwick Aspire is a firm-fit sock made with wicking olefin, though Swiftwick gives it no mmHg rating. For graded compression, see our athletic compression socks guide.
How often should you change socks if your feet sweat?
The AAD says to change shoes and socks often and not to wear the same shoes two days in a row. Carrying a spare pair for long days helps.
How we pick, and how the score works
Why trust us
Life in Good Form is owned and edited by Isaac Daniels. Every number on this page comes from the maker’s own page or Amazon listing text, or from the guides named in the sources below. We don’t run wear tests, so we never present a number as measured by us.
Prices and photos come from Amazon and show the time they were read.
How we pick
Low-cut running and training socks only, so one formula fits all four.
Each Amazon listing checked as genuine, new and in stock the day we updated, with the buy box held by the brand, Amazon, a brand partner or an authorized reseller.
Fiber content and features taken from the maker’s own page; where Amazon differs, the maker wins.
Smartwool Run and Injinji Run were checked too. Their Amazon buy boxes were held by resellers, and some Injinji sizes were out of stock.
Every pick scores 7.0 or more on our spec score below.
How the spec score is calculated
Every sock gets the same five checks. Each is scored out of 10, and the overall score is the weighted average. A sock needs 7.0 or more to be a pick. It’s built from what the makers publish only. It isn’t a customer rating or a wear test.
