Mini trampoline (rebounder): how to choose one and use it safely

Quick answerA mini trampoline, or rebounder, is a small fitness trampoline, with frame sizes such as 39 or 44 inches, used for low, controlled bouncing workouts at home. Compare the suspension feel and firmness; elastic cords are one option. Choose a stated weight capacity well above your weight, stable legs and a handle bar if your balance is not perfect. Keep bounces low; makers rate these for fitness use, not high jumping. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises keeping children off trampolines.

What a mini trampoline is for

A rebounder is built for small, rhythmic bounces where your feet barely leave the mat: a gentle health bounce, jogging in place, low jumping jacks and balance work. It is not a backyard trampoline for big jumps or tricks. JumpSport, a maker of fitness trampolines, says its weight capacities support fitness use only and are not intended to support high or extreme bouncing.

Research is limited but encouraging for supervised programs. A 2019 randomized study in Clinical Interventions in Aging followed 40 women aged 56 to 83 with low bone density (osteopenia). The group that trained on mini trampolines twice a week for 12 weeks, with supporting bars and an instructor at every session, improved balance, functional mobility, strength, gait and fear of falling compared with the control group. No exercise injuries occurred. Bone density results were inconclusive, and the authors called for larger, longer studies.

How to choose a mini trampoline

FeatureWhat to look for
SuspensionCompare the selected maker's firmness and noise guidance; suspension alone does not prove one model is softer. JumpSport's 39 inch Premium uses 30 elastic cords.
Weight capacityWell above your weight. JumpSport lists 250 lb for its Essential 39, 275 lb for the Premium 39, 300 lb for the PRO 39, 275 lb for the Essential 44 and 325 lb for the PRO 44.
SizeMeasure your available space; JumpSport's 39 inch Premium has a 34 inch or 37 inch mat depending on the cover style, and is recommended for bouncers up to 6 ft.
LegsWide, stable legs that do not tip; JumpSport uses arched legs.
Handle barHelpful for beginners and anyone with balance concerns. Often sold separately.
FoldingMeasure its folded dimensions and compare with your under-bed or closet space. Check whether folding needs disassembly.
PaddingA padded cover over the cords or springs protects your feet if you land off-center.

Bigger frames give more landing area but need more floor space and ceiling clearance. Measure both before buying.

These ratings come from JumpSport's current comparison chart. Its older support article lists 225 lb for Essential 44, while the current product chart lists 275 lb; confirm the rating on the exact model and manual before ordering.

A simple mini trampoline workout

  1. Health bounce. Feet hip-width, knees soft, press down into the mat so your heels lift slightly while your toes stay in contact.
  2. Jog in place. Small, quiet steps in the center of the mat.
  3. Low jumping jacks. Keep the jumps small and controlled.
  4. Single-leg balance. Stand on one foot, holding the handle bar if needed.

Start with a few minutes and short rests, stay in the center of the mat, and stop if you feel dizzy or unsteady. The study used supporting bars and instructor supervision together; it does not establish that adding a bar makes solo exercise safe. If you have balance concerns, get a clinician or qualified instructor's advice before trying single-leg work.

For other low-impact cardio options at home, see recumbent bikes; for a higher-impact option, see jump ropes.

Mini trampolines and children

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends keeping kids away from trampolines, except in settings with professional coaches and specialized equipment, and says children under 6 should never jump. Its September 2024 article reports about 110,000 trampoline-related emergency room visits in the US each year and more than 800,000 children hurt on trampolines from 2009 to 2018. The AAP's guidance covers trampolines in general and does not single out mini trampolines.

If a child does use one, the AAP's rules are: one child at a time, a grown-up always watching, no flips or somersaults, and checking pads and parts before each use. For that reason this page does not recommend mini trampolines made for children.

Placement and care

What to look for when you buy

Bungee mini trampoline for adults, about 39 inches

Best for: Low-impact home cardio in an average room

JumpSport's current 39 inch models have stated weight ratings from 250 lb to 300 lb. Compare firmness, usable mat diameter and floor-space needs rather than choosing on suspension type alone.

Watch out: Rated for fitness bouncing only, not high jumps or tricks.

Mini trampoline with a stabilizing handle bar

Best for: Beginners, older adults and anyone with balance concerns

The 2019 study combined a supporting bar with an instructor at every session. That supervised result does not prove a handle bar alone prevents injury.

Watch out: Check that the bar locks firmly and is at a comfortable height; ask your doctor first if you have balance problems or osteoporosis.

Foldable mini trampoline

Best for: Small homes where it must be put away after use

A folding frame stores flat. JumpSport sells folding versions of its fitness trampolines with hand screw bolts for faster setup.

Watch out: Check that the hinges lock fully every time before you bounce.

Large 44 inch fitness trampoline

Best for: Taller or heavier users who want more landing area

JumpSport's current PRO 44 rating is 325 lb. The maker also lists a 48 inch PRO at 425 lb, so PRO 44 is not its highest-capacity model.

Watch out: Needs more floor space and ceiling clearance; not every 44 inch model has a higher rating.

When to talk to a doctor: Ask your doctor before rebounding if you have balance problems, osteoporosis, joint or back injuries, a heart condition, pelvic floor problems, or are pregnant. Stop if you feel dizzy, short of breath or have pain, and keep young children off trampolines as the AAP advises.

Questions people ask

Are mini trampolines good exercise for adults?
They can be a low-impact way to get moving. In one small 2019 study, older women with osteopenia improved balance, mobility and strength after 12 weeks of supervised mini trampoline training.
Are mini trampolines safe for kids?
The AAP recommends keeping kids away from trampolines except with professional coaching, and says children under 6 should never jump.
Bungee or spring mini trampoline?
Compare the maker's firmness, noise guidance and tension adjustment options for the exact model. Check its weight rating and inspect cords or springs before each use.
How much weight can a mini trampoline hold?
It varies by model. The current JumpSport chart lists ratings from 250 lb to 425 lb. Its support page says the ratings cover fitness bouncing, not high or extreme bouncing; follow the exact model's manual.
