You swap attachments all session and want the lightest bar. The Body-Solid MB148A weighs 3 lb.

Synergee’s 48 in Lat Bar scored 10.0, the top score on this page, with full marks on all eight checks. It’s the only pick whose maker states a swivel, a diameter, a finish, a weight and a warranty term that names cable attachments. The Amazon listing is sold by Synergee USA.

Synergee builds it from solid steel with a chrome finish, 25 mm thick and 11 lb, per its own spec table. The Amazon text says the chrome coat is there for rust resistance. Round rubber end caps sit on both ends of the bar.

It’s also the only pick with its knurling measured. Synergee lists 8 in of straight knurling and 7 in of angled knurling, and says the knurl gives you several no-slip grip options. The Amazon text adds that the bar is angled at either end for a full range of motion.

Synergee says the bar is fitted with a smooth-moving swivel, and its listing describes a rotating bracket where the cable clips on. Body-Solid makes the case for a center swivel on its own bars: it says the swivel keeps the movement steady through each rep.

To hook it up, Synergee says the bar works with any cable machine that has a standard carabiner. You clip the carabiner through the attachment hole and start. Synergee doesn’t list a carabiner in the box, so check the one on your machine before you order.

Synergee’s warranty table gives cable attachments one year, for home and commercial use alike, and structural welds a limited lifetime. Neither of the other picks has a warranty line that names this kind of bar, which is where Synergee pulls clear of them.

The listing names wide and narrow pronated pulldowns, the grip with your palms facing away. Use the grip planner below to see where one, one and a half and two times your shoulder width land on its 48 in.

You change attachments often, store the bar on a hook, or want a thicker grip than the steel bars.

You want a warranty that names the bar. Body-Solid’s page gives none; the Synergee gives one year.

Body-Solid’s MB148A Aluminum Lat Bar scored 8.0. It’s the lightest pick by a wide margin, at 3 lb against 11 to 11.6 lb for the two steel bars. It’s sold under Body-Solid Tools, one of Body-Solid’s brands, and the Amazon listing is sold by Amazon.com.

Body-Solid makes it from high-strength 1¼ in aluminum. It calls the bar rust-proof and lightweight, and says that gives it clear advantages over comparable steel cable bars. At 1¼ in, or about 32 mm, it’s also the thickest grip of our three picks.

The light weight is the reason to pick it. REP makes the same point about its own bar: a lighter bar is easier to store, move and attach wherever you need it. With the MB148A, that gap is about 8 lb of steel you don’t lift on and off the cable.

Body-Solid says the center of the bar swivels and rotates, for steady, uninterrupted motion and more exercise variety. The listing’s close-up photo shows a machined swivel eye between two knurled sections, and Body-Solid rates the bar for both home and commercial use.

Body-Solid says the MB148A attaches to any pulley or cable weight machine, and names lat pulldowns and straight arm pulldowns. It lists the bar at 48 in long, 4 in wide and 1.88 in high.

Two checks hold it back. Its product page gives no warranty term, and Body-Solid’s warranty page lists several plans without saying which covers this bar, so it scores zero there. It also says nothing about the carabiner, so it misses that check as well.

The Amazon listing’s title names the MB148A, while its part number field reads MB148At. Its photos show an aluminum bar with a machined swivel eye and knurling, as Body-Solid describes, so we matched the listing on title, photos and specs.

You want a swivel and a warranty in the maker’s own words. The Synergee states both.

REP Fitness’s Pro Series 48 in Lat Bar scored 7.0, the lowest of our three picks but still on our 7.0 line. The Amazon listing is sold by Rep Fitness, and the part number on it, FTA-5060-PS, matches the 48 in bar on REP’s own site.

REP finishes it in hard chrome with plastic end caps. Its page says the bar has shallow knurling to give you extra grip without tearing up your hands. That’s the reason to choose it if you’ve found deep knurling hard on your palms.

REP lists it at 48 in long and 26 mm in diameter, 1 mm thicker than the Synergee. It gives the weight as about 11.6 lb and says the bar is lightweight and easy to store, move or attach. The Amazon text calls the bar solid steel.

It loses three points on two checks. REP’s product page doesn’t say the bar has a swivel. Its photo shows a ring at the center where the cable clips on, but we score what the maker writes, not what a photo seems to show.

REP’s warranty table doesn’t list the lat bar by name. It gives structural welds on attachments and frames a lifetime warranty and pulleys, bearings and cables one year. With no line for the bar itself, it scores zero on warranty.

REP says plainly that the bar doesn’t come with a carabiner. The Amazon text says its attachment rings accept standard carabiners and swivel shackles, so plan on using the carabiner from your machine or buying one.

REP names lat pulldowns, rows and tricep pushdowns. Its Amazon page shows REP’s whole cable attachment lineup, from a 38 in lat bar to rope and row handles. Our link goes to the 48 in bar, so check the size shown before you buy.

Lat bars we checked and left out

A pick has to score 7.0 or more, be sold new, and match the maker’s published specs. These four missed one of those.

Body-Solid’s Pro-Grip is a different take on the same bar: six knurl-textured rubber grips and a center swivel on 13 lb of solid steel. Body-Solid’s page gives no finish, diameter or warranty term for it, so it lands at 6.0.

The CAP, Bells of Steel and Inspire listings each name a part or length that doesn’t match what the maker sells on its own site. We can’t tell which version would ship, so we didn’t pick them.

How wide should you grip a lat bar?

A 2014 study compared three grip widths on the lat pulldown. Enter your shoulder width to see where each one lands on a 48 in bar.

Grip-width planner

Grip widths from Andersen and colleagues (2014), drawn on a 48 in bar to scale.

Narrow 1×Medium 1.5×Wide 2×
  • Narrow (1×): 16 in between your hands, 16 in of bar past each hand.
  • Medium (1.5×): 24 in between your hands, 12 in of bar past each hand.
  • Wide (2×): 32 in between your hands, 8 in of bar past each hand.
Shoulder width is measured across your back between the bony tips of your shoulders. Hand spacing is the distance between your hands. The drawing shows the bar straight; real lat bars bend down near the ends.

Andersen and colleagues had 15 men do the lat pulldown with a narrow, medium and wide palms-away grip, spaced at one, one and a half and two times the distance between their shoulders. Lat, trapezius and infraspinatus activity was similar across all three when the whole movement was measured.

Loads were close too. The six-rep max averaged 80.3 kg with the narrow grip, 80.0 kg with the medium and 77.3 kg with the wide. The authors say a medium grip may have some minor advantages, and that anywhere from one to two times shoulder width should give similar results.

To measure, find the bony point at the outer tip of each shoulder and measure straight across your back between them, or have someone do it for you. On every bar here, even a two-times grip leaves bar to spare unless your shoulders measure over 24 in.

How long should a lat pulldown bar be?

All three picks are 48 in, the length most makers list for a full lat bar. Length carries the most weight in our score.

BarLength, per the maker
Synergee Lat Bar48 in
Body-Solid MB148A48 in
REP Pro Series Lat Bar48 in
Body-Solid MB148RG (left out)48 in in its text; 49 in in its dimensions
Bells of Steel (left out)45 in on the maker’s page; 47.6 in on Amazon
REP 38 in Lat Bar (shorter version)38 in

A 48 in bar leaves room for a two-times grip with bar to spare on each side, which is why our length check gives full marks from 48 in. REP also sells a 38 in version, which is a different product from the full 48 in bar.

Check your machine too. On some home gyms the lat bar swings between two uprights, and a 48 in bar has to clear them. Measure the gap at the height of the top pulley before you order.

Knurling or rubber grips?

The grip is what your hands hold for every rep. Each maker describes it differently.

BarGrip, per the maker
Synergee Lat BarKnurling: 8 in straight and 7 in angled, plus rubber end caps
Body-Solid MB148AKnurled grips on aluminum
REP Pro Series Lat BarShallow knurling, “without tearing up your hands”
Body-Solid MB148RG (left out)Six knurl-textured rubber grips
CAP MBR-148R (CAP’s site)Rubber handgrips

Knurling is the cross-hatched pattern cut into the metal. REP calls its knurl shallow on purpose, to give extra grip without tearing up your hands. Synergee is the only maker that tells you how much of the bar is knurled.

Rubber grips are the other route. Body-Solid’s Pro-Grip has six of them, and CAP sells a rubber-grip version of its lat bar on its own site. Both of those missed our picks for other reasons, but if bare knurl bothers your hands, a rubber-grip bar or lifting straps are options.

Does a lat bar need a swivel?

A swivel lets the bar turn where the cable clips on. Two of our three makers say theirs has one.

BarSwivel, per the maker
Synergee Lat Bar“Smooth-moving swivel”; rotating bracket on the listing
Body-Solid MB148ACenter swivels and rotates
REP Pro Series Lat BarNot stated on REP’s page
Body-Solid MB148RG (left out)Smooth, fluid center swivel
CAP MB-148R (CAP’s site)Full barrel swivel

Body-Solid makes the case for one: it says a smooth center swivel gives steady follow-through, and that the MB148A’s swivel and rotation keep the motion constant and add exercise variety. That’s why a stated swivel is worth 15% of our score.

REP’s photo shows a ring at the center where the cable clips on, but REP’s page doesn’t say the bar swivels, and we score the maker’s words. If a swivel matters most to you, the Synergee and the Body-Solid both state it.

How much does a lat pulldown bar weigh?

Google asks for the standard weight. The steel bars we checked weigh 11 to 13 lb; the aluminum one weighs 3 lb.

Body-Solid MB148RG13 lbREP Pro Series11.6 lbSynergee11 lbCAP (listing)11 lbBody-Solid MB148A3 lbBody-Solid MB148RG13 lbREP Pro Series11.6 lbSynergee11 lbCAP (listing)11 lbBody-Solid MB148A3 lb
Bar weight from each maker’s page or listing, read Oct 22, 2026. Gray bars are left-out bars.

The difference comes down to material. Synergee, REP, CAP and the Body-Solid Pro-Grip are steel; Synergee and REP finish theirs in chrome, and the CAP listing’s is black. Body-Solid’s MB148A is high-strength aluminum, which Body-Solid calls rust-proof and lightweight.

We score whether the maker publishes a weight, not which weight is better, because both have a use. A light bar is easier to hang up and swap; REP says the same of its 11.6 lb bar. If you share a cable station and change attachments every set, the 3 lb aluminum bar saves the most lifting.

How thick is the grip?

Bar diameter changes how the bar sits in your hand. Three makers publish it.

Body-Solid MB148A1¼ in (about 32 mm)REP Pro Series26 mmSynergee25 mmBody-Solid MB148RGNot publishedCAP (listing)Not publishedBody-Solid MB148A1¼ in (about 32 mm)REP Pro Series26 mmSynergee25 mmBody-Solid MB148RGNot publishedCAP (listing)Not published
Grip diameter from each maker’s page, read Oct 22, 2026. 1¼ in is 31.75 mm. Gray bars are left-out bars.

Synergee and REP sit 1 mm apart, at 25 mm and 26 mm. Body-Solid’s aluminum bar is the thick one, at 1¼ in. The diameter check is about whether the maker tells you at all; it’s worth 10% of the score.

Bells of Steel also lists 25 mm on its own page. Body-Solid lists the Pro-Grip at 49 by 1.50 by 7 in but doesn’t say which figure is the grip, so it doesn’t count.

Will it clip onto your machine?

Most cable machines join the bar to the cable with a carabiner or snap hook. Here’s what each maker says.

BarHow it attaches, per the maker
Synergee Lat BarAny cable machine with a standard carabiner, clipped through the attachment hole
Body-Solid MB148AAny pulley or cable weight machine; no carabiner details
REP Pro Series Lat BarNo carabiner included; rings accept standard carabiners and swivel shackles (listing)
Bells of Steel (left out)Carabiner not included; swap a small carabiner for a bigger one if it won’t fit

REP’s listing says its attachments connect to the carabiner or snap hook already on your lat pulldown, functional trainer or cable tower, so a bar without one is normal. The question is fit. Bells of Steel’s listing puts it plainly: if your carabiner is too small for the bar’s eyelet, swap it for a bigger one.

REP and Bells of Steel both say no carabiner comes with the bar. If your machine’s carabiner is worn or too small, get one that fits the bar’s eyelet before your first set.

Which warranties cover a lat bar?

Synergee’s table has a line for cable attachments: one year, home or commercial. REP’s table covers structural welds on attachments and frames for life and pulleys, bearings and cables for one year, but has no line for lat bars. Body-Solid’s MB148A page states no term at all.

The warranty is 15% of our score. If a written term matters to you, the Synergee is the only pick with one.

Types of lat pulldown attachments

The long lat bar is one of several cable attachments. REP’s Amazon listing alone names more than ten.

AttachmentWhat it isGrip
Long lat bar (this page)A 48 in bar with angled endsWide or narrow, palms away or toward you
Short lat barA shorter version, like REP’s 38 inNarrower grips
Straight barA short straight bar for curls and pushdownsClose
Multi-grip barA bar with several handle anglesWide, narrow and neutral
V-bar or triangle row handleTwo handles close togetherNeutral, palms facing
Tricep ropeA heavy-duty nylon rope, per REPNeutral

REP’s listing covers its whole lineup: 38 in and 48 in lat bars, a straight bar, a multi-grip curl bar, a tricep rope, a pressdown bar, D and sports handles, open and triangle row handles and a chinning triangle. Searches for V-bars and neutral-grip bars are their own products, so we don’t score them against the long bar here.

Lusk and colleagues compared palms-away and palms-toward grips on the lat pulldown. The palms-away grip drew more lat activity, whether the hands were wide or narrow, and they recommend pulling the bar down in front of the face with that grip.

How to do a lat pulldown with a bar

The setup and cues, step by step, from the American Council on Exercise (ACE) exercise library.

  1. 1
    Set the thigh pad

Firm on top of your thighs.

  2. 2
    Brace your core

No arch in your low back.

  3. 3
    Set your shoulders

    Back and down, arms long.

  4. 4
    Lean back slightly

    No more than 30 degrees.

  5. 5
    Pull to your chest

    Elbows down to the floor.

  6. 6
    Return slowly

    Until your elbows straighten.

ACE starts with the thigh pad set firmly against the top of your thighs. Brace your abs to steady your spine and avoid arching your low back. Reach up and grip the bar, then pull your shoulders back and down and try to hold them there.

Lean back slightly, no more than about 30 degrees, and keep your head in line with your spine. Exhale and start the pull by lowering your shoulder blades, then drive your elbows down toward the floor and bring the bar toward the top or middle of your chest.

ACE says to stop when the bar nears your chest, or when your elbows stop moving down and start moving back, because going further adds stress to the shoulder. Pause, then let the bar rise slowly until your elbows are fully straight. ACE’s standing variation uses a staggered stance with your weight shifted onto the back leg.

Questions people ask

What is the best lat pulldown bar?

For most home cable machines, the Synergee Lat Bar: 48 in of chrome steel, 25 mm thick and 11 lb, with a swivel, measured knurl zones, rubber end caps and a one-year warranty on cable attachments. For a 3 lb bar, the Body-Solid MB148A. For shallow knurling, the REP Pro Series.

What muscles does a lat pulldown bar work?

ACE files the lat pulldown under back exercises and says it targets the major back muscles. The two grip studies on this page measured the latissimus dorsi, trapezius, infraspinatus and biceps, and found the lats working across every grip width they tested.

What is the ideal width for a lat pulldown bar grip?

Andersen and colleagues found similar muscle activity with hands spaced one to two times your shoulder width, and suggest a medium grip, about one and a half times, may have some minor advantages. Our grip-width planner shows where those land on a 48 in bar.

What is the standard weight of a lat pulldown bar?

The steel 48 in bars we checked weigh 11 to 13 lb: Synergee 11 lb, REP about 11.6 lb, CAP 11 lb and Body-Solid’s Pro-Grip 13 lb. Body-Solid’s aluminum MB148A weighs 3 lb.

How long is a standard lat pulldown bar?

48 in is the length Synergee, REP, Body-Solid and CAP all list for a full lat bar. REP also makes a 38 in version for closer grips.

How do you use a lat pulldown bar safely?

ACE’s cues: set the thigh pad firm, brace your abs and don’t arch your low back, lean back no more than about 30 degrees, and stop the pull when your elbows start moving back instead of down. Check that the carabiner fits the bar’s eyelet before you load the stack.

Should you pull the bar behind your neck?

ACE has you pull the bar toward the top or middle of your chest. Lusk and colleagues also recommend pulling in front of the face, with a palms-away grip, for the most lat activity.

Is a palms-away or palms-toward grip better for lats?

In Lusk and colleagues’ study, a palms-away grip drew more lat activity than a palms-toward grip, whether the hands were wide or narrow.

Do lat pulldown bars come with a carabiner?

Not usually. REP and Bells of Steel both say theirs don’t, and Synergee and Body-Solid don’t list one. REP’s listing says its attachments clip to the carabiner or snap hook already on your machine.

Will a lat pulldown bar fit any cable machine?

Synergee says its bar fits any cable machine with a standard carabiner, and Body-Solid says the MB148A attaches to any pulley or cable weight machine. Check that your machine has room for a 48 in bar between its uprights.

How we pick, and how the score works

Why trust us

Life in Good Form is owned and edited by Isaac Daniels. Every spec on this page comes from the maker’s own page or Amazon listing, named in the sources below, and the form and grip advice comes from ACE and two published studies. We don’t run lifting tests, so we never present a number as measured by us.

Prices and photos come from Amazon and show the time they were read.

How we pick

  • Long cable lat bars only, 45 in or more with angled ends. V-bars, ropes and row handles are different products.
  • Specs read from the maker, not from other review sites.
  • Each Amazon listing checked as genuine, new and in stock the day we updated, and matched to the maker’s own part.
  • Every pick checked against CPSC recalls.
  • Every pick scores 7.0 or more on our spec score below.

How the spec score is calculated

Every long lat bar we scored gets the same eight checks. A bar needs 7.0 or more to be a pick. Each check is scored out of 10, and the overall score is the weighted average.

Length carries the most weight, then the swivel, the grip and the warranty. The score is built from the makers’ published specs only, and it isn’t a customer rating or a test.
