Why a laptop needs a stand
Mayo Clinic notes that low screen height and a cramped built-in keyboard or touchpad may cause laptop discomfort. It suggests a stand plus an external keyboard and mouse for a desktop-style setup.
Check the stand's supported laptop dimensions, weight limit, adjustment method and base footprint. The front retaining lip must not obstruct use or damage the laptop. Read how each joint locks and whether the support blocks ventilation openings.
How high should a laptop stand be?
OSHA gives these monitor-position starting points:
- Height: top of the screen at or slightly below eye level.
- Viewing angle: screen center normally 15 to 20 degrees below horizontal eye level.
- Distance: generally 20 to 40 inches from eyes to screen. Increase text size if needed rather than leaning forward.
- Tilt and glare: adjust the screen to your line of sight and lighting.
Mayo suggests lowering the monitor an additional 1 to 2 inches for bifocals. These are setup guidelines, not one fixed stand height for every user; check comfortable viewing alongside your keyboard position.
Types of laptop stands
| Type | What to compare | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Adjustable laptop stand | Height range, locking joints and base footprint | Needs room on the work surface |
| Portable folding support | Folded size, weight and laptop compatibility | Check stability at your intended height |
| Fixed riser | Whether its one height suits the complete setup | Less flexible if the user or work surface changes |
| Fan-equipped support | Vent access, power connection, noise and height | A cooling label does not establish ergonomic height or thermal results |
For a separate monitor, compare a monitor riser too. Check its dimensions independently rather than assuming the laptop support fits it.
Finish the setup: keyboard, mouse and chair
Mayo advises relaxed shoulders, straight wrists, hands at or slightly below elbow level and the mouse within easy reach on the keyboard surface. Compare an external keyboard and mouse as part of the setup.
Set your seating so your feet are supported; a footrest is an option if needed. Stand height and keyboard reach need to work together.
Moving between workspaces
A folding stand is useful only if its height, stability and laptop fit suit the new surface. Check the full carry load including keyboard, mouse and charger. Set up again at each location rather than assuming the previous adjustment still fits.
Mayo recommends getting up and moving during the workday. An adjusted stand does not make staying in one position comfortable indefinitely.
Compatibility checks before ordering
Start with your actual laptop, including any case you keep on it. Measure its width and depth, then compare those with the support surface and the maker's compatibility list. Screen diagonal alone does not describe the base that rests on the stand. Check the permitted load with your complete setup rather than assuming a stand for a large screen fits every laptop of that size.
Look at the front lip, side supports and adjustment controls. Will the lip interfere with opening the lid? Can you reach charging and USB connections without stretching a cable across the work surface? If you use a docking station, plan its position and cable route too. Check which feet or contact pads touch the laptop and whether replacements are available.
For an adjustable model, compare the instructions for raising, lowering and locking it. Check whether the maker expects adjustment with the laptop removed. Make room to operate the control without knocking a nearby cup or monitor. For a folding model, compare its folded dimensions with your bag and note whether loose parts need a separate pouch.
Before discarding packaging, confirm that the delivered model matches the listing, its supports and pads are intact, and its locking mechanism works as described. Follow the return or support instructions if parts are missing or the laptop does not sit securely. Do not improvise a higher load or modify joints to force an unsuitable fit.
What to look for when you buy
Height-adjustable laptop stand for desk
Best for: Daily desk work with a separate keyboard and mouse
Compare its adjustment range with the viewing-position guidelines above.
Watch out: Check stability and laptop compatibility at the chosen height, with an external keyboard and mouse.
See options on AmazonPortable folding laptop stand
Best for: Hybrid workers and travel
Compare folded size, carry weight and stable support at your working height.
Watch out: Use the maker's joint-locking instructions. Portability does not establish stability.

Best for: Comparing a fan-equipped support
Check vent alignment, fan noise, power connection and usable height for your specific laptop.
Watch out: Do not assume a cooling claim means tested temperature improvement or a suitable screen height.

Best for: Anyone who raises a laptop on a stand
Mayo recommends separate input devices alongside a stand when using a laptop at a desk.
Watch out: Check compatibility, key spacing, reach and carry size if traveling.

- Are laptop stands good for your neck?
- A stand can help arrange viewing position, but comfort depends on the full setup. It is not a treatment for neck pain.
- How high should my laptop stand be?
- Use the monitor-position guidelines above and adjust for your seating, vision and input-device position.
- Do I need a keyboard with a laptop stand?
- Mayo suggests an external keyboard and mouse with a stand for desk use so input and viewing can be arranged separately.
- How far away should a laptop on a stand be?
- Use the general distance range above and make text readable without leaning. Adjust for comfortable viewing rather than choosing by stand height alone.
