Inversion tables: what to check before you buy one

By the Life in Good Form editors. Updated 2026-10-14.

We research products from makers' specs and health sources; we do not run hands-on tests. Links to Amazon may earn us a commission at no cost to you. How this works.

Quick answerAn inversion table supports a backward tilt with ankle restraints. Cleveland Clinic says evidence for back-pain benefit is mixed. Get clinician clearance before buying. Compare height and weight limits, angle controls, ankle-lock operation, setup instructions and the space needed to rotate and store the exact model.
Our picks at a glance
  • Inversion table with adjustable angle limiter. Best for: Comparing tilt controls after clinician clearance. See options on Amazon
  • Inversion table with long-handle ankle lock. Best for: Comparing ankle-lock reach and operation. See options on Amazon
  • Heavy-duty inversion table with a high weight rating. Best for: Users comparing their measurements with model limits. See options on Amazon

What an inversion table does, and what the evidence shows

Cleveland Clinic describes inversion as a traction approach with mixed, mostly small studies. It should complement clinician-directed care rather than replace it. Trying it in physical therapy before buying may help you assess whether it suits you.

A table changes your position and weight distribution as it rotates. Its operating manual matters as much as the advertised padding. Read the setup, ankle-lock and return-upright instructions before purchase. For other formats, see back stretching machines; their instructions are different.

Who should not use an inversion table without a doctor's okay

Cleveland Clinic warns that head-down positioning can increase pressure in the skull and cause serious harm, potentially fatal. Discuss high or low blood pressure, heart disease or POTS, eye disease including glaucoma, reflux, pregnancy, stroke or brain injury with your clinician.

Teeter X3 requires physician approval. Its warnings also cover neurological conditions, impaired alertness/mobility, seizures, severe headaches, anticoagulants, osteoporosis, fractures, joint/spinal disorders, implants, retinal/ear/sinus/balance problems, hernias, kidney/gallbladder disease, recent surgery and restricted exercise. Discuss all conditions, drugs and supplements with your clinician; review the entire warning list.

How to choose an inversion table

SpecWhat to checkBuyer decision
Height and weightYour measurements fall inside the exact model's limitsDo not assume that a high weight capacity also fits your height
Angle controlHow the tether, strap or pin is set and checkedCompare the available settings with your clinician's advice
Ankle lockYou can reach, engage and test the lock as instructedPadding cannot replace a secure fit or usable release mechanism
Setup and conditionComplete instructions, identifiable model, intact partsReject missing safety information or damaged equipment
Use and storage spaceOperating clearance and folded dimensions from the makerFolding does not automatically mean safe upright storage around children

Teeter's support page states a user range of 4 feet 8 inches to 6 feet 6 inches and up to 300 lb for its tables. Confirm the manual for your exact model. These are limits, not a recommendation to use inversion.

Check for recalls and inspect the frame

Check the CPSC recall database by manufacturer, model and serial number before buying, including secondhand equipment. A January 2008 recall covered about 2,000 tables after three reports of a center-weld failure; no injuries were reported at that time. This is a historical example, not a current defect rate for other tables. Stop using a recalled table and follow its recall remedy.

Get all parts, labels and instructions with a used table. A seller's statement that it still works is not evidence that it is complete or safe. Inspect it using the maker's checklist before each session.

How to start safely

Cleveland Clinic advises a spotter for the first attempt, gradual short sessions, slow return upright and stopping for dizziness or worsening pain. Ask your clinician about angle and duration; a study example is not a personal exercise prescription.

X3 precautions: check height/balance and ankle-lock engagement each use; wear tied, flat-soled lace-ups, not boots/thick soles. Do not invert face down or sit up/lift your head to return; follow its return procedure. Keep children, pets and bystanders away, and hair, clothing and body parts clear of moving parts. No drowsy/intoxicated operation or added weights/bands. Use a level surface; inspect fasteners and stop using damaged equipment. Secure against rotation and store flat around children/pets. Follow other models' own manuals.

What to look for when you buy

Inversion table with adjustable angle limiter

Best for: Comparing tilt controls after clinician clearance

Compare the limiter's settings, instructions and adjustment access. Choose controls you can operate correctly.

Watch out: A limiter does not make inversion medically suitable. Review the warnings above and the exact manual.

Inversion table with long-handle ankle lock

Best for: Comparing ankle-lock reach and operation

Inspect where the handle sits and how engagement is tested. Confirm you can operate it as instructed.

Watch out: An easy-to-reach handle does not establish safe fit. Check shoe restrictions and the lock test.

Heavy-duty inversion table with a high weight rating

Best for: Users comparing their measurements with model limits

Check both height and weight ranges. Capacity and overall size are separate specifications.

Watch out: Measure operating clearance and folded storage space; a bigger rating does not establish suitability.

When to talk to a doctor: Obtain clinician clearance and review the full model warning list before use. Stop for pain, dizziness or lightheadedness and follow the manual's return procedure. A table is not a substitute for assessment of new or worsening back symptoms.

Questions people ask

What are the benefits of an inversion table?
Evidence is mixed, as discussed above. There is no assured benefit for an individual buyer.
Is an inversion table good for back pain?
Ask a clinician about safety and whether a supervised trial makes sense for your condition. A product claim is not a diagnosis.
How long should you hang on an inversion table?
Follow clinician advice and the exact model manual. Do not use a study's duration as a universal home-use schedule.
Do you have to go fully upside down?
Do not assume full inversion is necessary or suitable. Compare the tilt settings and follow the guidance for your model and situation.
Who should not use an inversion table?
See the medical cautions above. Physician approval and the complete model warning list matter more than a short list of conditions.
