How the three blankets score
Our spec score uses five checks from the makers’ own text, weighted the same for every blanket. All three clear our 7.0 floor for a pick. The method is at the bottom of the page.
Life in Good Form spec score out of 10, from each maker’s published text, read Oct 22, 2026. It is not a customer rating or a lab test.

You want the highest published qmax. Elegear lists over 0.5.
Bedsure’s Silky Soft Cooling Blanket is the one we’d put on most beds. It scored 8.8, the top score here, because it does the practical things well. The Queen is a full 90 by 90 inches, it can go in the dryer, and Bedsure publishes a cool-touch number for it. On Amazon it’s sold by Bedsure itself.
Size is where it earns most of its lead. Lay the 90-inch Queen on a 60-inch queen mattress and 15 inches hang over each side. That covers the side of a 12-inch mattress with room to spare. The King is 108 by 90 inches, which leaves 16 inches a side on a 76-inch king.
It’s a two-sided blanket. One side is Bedsure’s nylon cooling fabric; the other is a rayon-from-bamboo blend, which Bedsure pitches as the softer, more breathable side for nights that aren’t so hot. Flip it to match the weather.
Bedsure rates the cool side at a qmax over 0.4. That’s the lowest of the three blankets here that publish a figure, so on paper it feels a little less cold at first touch than the Elegear. Bedsure also claims a 4°F cooler feel on contact. It doesn’t say how that was measured, so treat it as the maker’s claim.
Care is simple. Bedsure says to put it in a laundry bag, wash cold and dry low. That’s the full instruction, and dryer use is one of our five checks. A blanket you can dry the same day is easier to keep on the bed all summer.
Two gaps. Bedsure’s page says the blanket is “certified for chemical safety” but doesn’t name the standard, so it gets part marks on that check. And at Bedsure’s own store, returns are open for 30 days from delivery for a refund or exchange. Amazon purchases follow Amazon’s return policy instead.

You want a queen blanket that drapes well past the mattress. The Bedsure Queen is 90 in.
Elegear’s Arc-Chill 3.0 Cooling Blanket is the one shoppers search for by name, about 2,900 times a month in the US for its two brand terms, per Semrush. It scored 8.0. It has the highest published cool-touch rating here, a qmax over 0.5, and it’s the only pick whose maker page lists a warranty. On Amazon it’s sold by Elegear Inc.
That qmax is why it’s our pick for the coolest first touch. A higher qmax means the fabric pulls heat from your skin faster in the first moment of contact, so it feels colder when you first get in. The back is 100% Egyptian cotton, which Elegear pitches for milder nights.
Size is where it slips. Elegear’s Queen is 79 by 86 inches, against 90 by 90 for the Bedsure and Amazon Basics Queens. With the 86-inch side across a 60-inch queen mattress, 13 inches hang over each side. That still covers a 12-inch mattress, but only just.
Elegear’s own size chart adds to the confusion. It suggests the 59 by 79 inch blanket for a standard queen bed and a 79 by 87 inch blanket for a standard king. On a 60-inch queen mattress, the 59-inch blanket is narrower than the bed. Use our bed-fit tool before you pick a size.
For care, Elegear says the blanket is machine washable and suggests a laundry net bag so it doesn’t tangle. It doesn’t say whether it can go in the dryer, so it gets part marks on that check. It also doesn’t name a textile safety label like OEKO-TEX.
Elegear’s listing says the blanket can lower skin temperature by 4 to 9°F on contact, and that it won Good Housekeeping Bedding Awards in 2025 and 2026. Those are Elegear’s claims. It doesn’t publish how it measured the temperature drop. Its product page lists a 1-year warranty.

You want a published cool-touch number. Elegear and Bedsure both list one.
Amazon Basics’ Cooling Blanket is the simplest of the three. It scored 8.5. Both sides are the same recyclable cooling nylon and polyester, Amazon says, so there’s no wrong way up. It carries a named safety label, and the care label lets it go in the dryer.
The label is OEKO-TEX Made in Green, the only named textile label on our three picks. OEKO-TEX says items with that label are tested for harmful substances and are traceable to the factories that made them. Each label has a number you can look up with OEKO-TEX’s Label Check.
The sizes are generous where it counts. The Queen is 90 by 90 inches, the same as Bedsure’s, so it hangs 15 inches over each side of a queen mattress. The King is 90 by 108 inches, and there’s a 50 by 70 inch Throw and a 60 by 90 inch Twin XL. There’s no Full, so on a full bed you’d use the Queen.
Care is the easiest here. Amazon’s label says machine wash warm and tumble dry low, and it says no fabric softener or dry cleaning is needed. That’s the most complete care line of the three, and the only one that allows warm water.
The gap is the cool-touch number. Amazon doesn’t publish a qmax for this blanket, so it gets our lowest mark on that check, the one with the most weight. It may feel just as cool, but there’s no published number to compare. And with cool fabric on both sides, there’s no warmer side to flip to in spring or fall.
On Amazon it’s sold by NorthPoint Home, the seller that holds the buy box on every Amazon Basics cooling blanket listing we checked. The Queen in Aloe Green is model ABS5I1W4ABQU.

Cozy Bliss’s site sells its double-sided blanket in 40 × 60, 50 × 70, 60 × 80 and 80 × 90 in, cooling on both sides, with a qmax over 0.46. The Amazon listing says 50 × 70 up to 108 × 90 in, a cotton-like back and 0.45. They may be two different blankets, and we can’t tell which one ships.
How do cooling blankets work?
A cooling blanket doesn’t make cold. Its fabric pulls heat out of your skin faster than cotton does at first touch, so it feels cool.
Each maker’s own qmax figure on its Amazon listing, read Oct 22, 2026. Topcee and Cozy Bliss were left out of the picks. Higher means cooler at first touch.
That first-touch feeling has a name in textile testing: contact cool feeling. The number for it is qmax, the peak heat flux, meaning the most heat that flows from a warm plate into the fabric in the instant they touch. Dr. Sueo Kawabata of Kyoto University defined it in the 1970s.
In 1977 Kawabata found that this first peak lines up closely with how cool a fabric feels to a person. The test is now written into a Japanese Industrial Standard, JIS L 1927, with matching standards in China (GB/T 35263-2017) and Taiwan (CNS 15687).
Makers write it many ways: Q-Max, Q-MAX, QMAX. The standard spelling is qmax. A higher number means a cooler first touch. That’s why every cooling blanket listing leads with it.
What qmax doesn’t tell you
qmax is one number from one moment. Here’s what it covers and what it leaves out.
It measures first touch
The peak heat flow in the moment fabric meets a warm surface. That’s the cool feeling when you get into bed or flip the blanket.
Higher is cooler
Between two fabrics, the higher qmax feels cooler to the touch, per the KES test it comes from.
Not how cool it stays
It says nothing about how the blanket feels an hour later. None of our picks publish a number for that.
Not the same lab
Each maker publishes its own figure. None of the three names the lab, so small gaps like 0.4 against 0.5 are rough.
So does a cooling blanket really work? It does what its number says: it feels cool when you touch it, and cooler than cotton. Once the fabric has been against you for a while, it’s sitting at close to your own temperature, so that first chill fades. Flipping it, or pushing your feet to a cool part of the blanket, brings it back.
That’s why the top answer in a Reddit r/explainlikeimfive thread calls them mostly a gimmick. If you want the room itself cooler, the blanket can’t do that. A bed cooling system or a fan moves heat away; a blanket only feels cool.
Will it cover your bed?
Each brand’s Queen is a different size, and a thick mattress needs more overhang to cover its sides. Pick your bed and see each blanket.
Bed-fit tool
Pick your mattress. We show the size each brand sells for it and how far it hangs over each side.
Bedsure Queen: 15 in a side; Elegear Queen: 13 in a side; Amazon Basics Queen: 15 in a side. All cover a 12 in side.

Overhang each side = (the blanket’s side that goes across − the mattress width) ÷ 2. The longer side goes across when the other side still reaches 75 in, most of the bed’s length; otherwise the shorter side does. Amber means under 12 in, the side of a common 12 in mattress. Amazon Basics has no Full, so its Queen is shown for a full bed.
Two things stand out. First, a 90 × 90 in Queen covers a queen bed with 15 inches a side, enough for a mattress up to 15 inches thick. Elegear’s 79 × 86 in Queen leaves 13 inches. That covers a 12-inch mattress but not a thick pillow-top.
Second, small sizes run small. Elegear’s Full is 59 inches wide, only 3 inches a side on a 53-inch full mattress. Its Twin is 51 × 67 in, which Elegear’s own chart suggests for single beds or as a throw. If you sleep on a full, Bedsure’s 80 × 90 in Full is the only Full of the three that covers the sides.
How thick is your mattress? RTINGS’s examples put a low-profile mattress at 10.7 inches, a standard one at 12.2 and a thick one at 15.4. Measure yours from the bottom seam to the top of the pillow-top.

What cooling blankets are made of
Most cooling blankets pair a slick synthetic cool side with a softer natural-feeling back. One of our picks uses the cool fabric on both sides.

Bedsure Silky Soft

Cool either way up; no warm side
Nylon is the cool side on most of these blankets, and it feels slick and smooth. A rayon or cotton back feels more like a regular sheet. Searches for a bamboo cooling blanket usually mean that rayon-from-bamboo side, as on the Bedsure.
If you sleep hot all year, a blanket that’s cool on both sides saves you checking which way up it is. If you want one blanket from May to October, a two-sided one gives you a warmer side for the shoulder months.
Safety labels: OEKO-TEX and others
A blanket sits against your skin all night, so a named label for harmful substances is worth a look.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a label for textiles tested for harmful substances, from the yarn to the finished item. OEKO-TEX says every thread, button and accessory is tested against a list of over 1,000 substances, with stricter limits for things that touch skin closely.
Made in Green adds two things on top of that testing: the item can be traced to the factories that made it, and those factories are checked for safer, more responsible working conditions. Every OEKO-TEX label carries a number you can check on OEKO-TEX’s Label Check page.

Cooling blanket, comforter or sheets?

Cooling comforter
A filled comforter with a cool-touch or breathable shell
An electric cooling blanket is the bed cooling system in a different shape: it needs power to move water or air, which a fabric blanket doesn’t. That’s a different product, and it isn’t on this page.
Bedsure sells its Silky Soft as a blanket you can layer under a comforter, and its title says so. That gives you a cool layer against your skin with the comforter on top for colder rooms.
Set the room first
A blanket only changes how fabric feels. The room temperature does more.
From the Sleep Foundation’s “The Best Temperature for Sleep”, read Oct 22, 2026.
The Sleep Foundation puts the best bedroom temperature at about 65°F and says most doctors recommend 65 to 68°F. Your body temperature drops as you fall asleep, and a cool room makes that easier.
If your room sits at 75°F, a cooling blanket helps you feel cooler when you get into bed. It won’t bring the room down. Pair it with a fan or the thermostat, and a cooling pillow if your head runs hot.
How to choose a cooling blanket
Check these five things before you order
1
Measure the bed
Mattress width and thickness. A queen is 60 in wide.
2
Check the size
A 90 × 90 in Queen gives 15 in a side; a 79 × 86 in Queen gives 13.
3
Look for qmax
Over 0.5 on the Elegear, over 0.4 on the Bedsure; none on Amazon Basics.
4
Pick the sides
Two-sided for spring and fall; cool on both sides for year-round heat.
A cooling blanket is loose bedding, and that matters for babies.
Don’t put a cooling blanket, or any loose blanket, in a baby’s sleep space. The American Academy of Pediatrics says soft objects and loose bedding, blankets included, can raise a baby’s risk of entrapment, suffocation or strangulation.
If you want something to keep a baby comfortable at night that isn’t loose bedding, see our baby sleep sack guide. If a baby could end up in your bed, the AAP says to clear blankets and pillows that could cover their face or cause overheating.
Questions people ask
Do cooling blankets really work?
They feel cool to the touch, which is what they’re built for. The cool-side fabric pulls heat from your skin faster than cotton at first contact. They don’t cool the room, and the chill fades as the fabric warms against you.
How do cooling blankets work?
The cool side is a fabric with a high qmax, the peak heat flow when warm skin touches it. More heat leaves your skin in that first moment, so it feels cool. Our qmax section explains the test.
Do ice cooling blankets actually work?
“Ice” blankets are the same cool-touch fabric blankets, not frozen. They feel cold at first touch. None of them lowers the room temperature.
How cold is a cooling blanket?
It’s at room temperature. It only feels colder because it draws heat from your skin quickly. Elegear claims a 4 to 9°F drop in skin temperature on contact and Bedsure claims 4°F; neither publishes how it measured that.
What does Q-Max mean on a cooling blanket?
qmax is the peak heat flux when a warm surface touches the fabric, defined by Dr. Sueo Kawabata and used in Japan’s JIS L 1927 test. Higher means cooler at first touch. Our picks list over 0.5 (Elegear) and over 0.4 (Bedsure).
What’s the best cooling blanket to buy?
For most beds, the Bedsure Silky Soft Cooling Blanket: a 90 × 90 in Queen, dryer-safe on low and a qmax over 0.4. For the highest qmax, Elegear; for cool fabric on both sides, Amazon Basics.
What size cooling blanket for a queen bed?
A 90 × 90 in Queen hangs 15 inches over each side of a 60-inch queen mattress. Elegear’s 79 × 86 in Queen hangs 13. Use our bed-fit tool for your mattress thickness.
Can you put a cooling blanket in the dryer?
It depends on the blanket. Bedsure says dry low and Amazon Basics says tumble dry low. Elegear doesn’t say, so we’d line dry it. Always follow the care tag.
Is a bamboo cooling blanket better?
Bamboo usually means rayon made from bamboo, used on the softer side, as on the Bedsure. The cool side is still nylon. Pick by qmax, size and care rather than the word bamboo.
Is a cooling blanket the same as an electric cooling blanket?
No. A cooling blanket is fabric only and feels cool to the touch. Electric cooling products move water or air with power; see our bed cooling system guide.
Can babies use a cooling blanket?
No. The American Academy of Pediatrics says to keep loose bedding, blankets included, out of a baby’s sleep space.
Can you use a cooling blanket with a comforter?
Yes. Bedsure sells its Silky Soft to layer under a comforter. You get the cool fabric against you and the comforter on top for a colder room.
How we pick, and how the score works
Why trust us
Life in Good Form is owned and edited by Isaac Daniels. Every number on this page comes from the maker’s own page or Amazon listing text, or from the standards and guides named in the sources below. We don’t run lab tests, so we never present a number as measured by us.
Prices and photos come from Amazon and show the time they were read.
How we pick
Fabric cooling blankets only: no fill, no weights, no power.
Each Amazon listing checked as genuine, new and in stock the day we updated, and matched to what the maker publishes.
Listings we couldn’t match to a maker left out.
Every pick and brand checked against CPSC recalls. Bedsure had one, in 2023, for electric heating blankets and pads; it doesn’t cover this blanket.
Every pick scores 7.0 or more on our spec score below.
How the spec score is calculated
Every blanket gets the same five checks. Each is scored out of 10, and the overall score is the weighted average. A blanket needs 7.0 or more to be a pick. It’s built from what the makers publish only. It isn’t a customer rating or a lab test.
