Compression shorts for men and women: what they do, how to fit them and what to buy

By the Life in Good Form editors. Updated 2026-10-14.

We research products from makers' specs and health sources; we do not run hands-on tests. Links to Amazon may earn us a commission at no cost to you. How this works.

Quick answerChoose compression shorts by the coverage, waistband, seams and storage you need for your activity, then use the selected maker's size chart. A snug sports base layer is not automatically a prescribed medical compression garment. Check whether the listing is intended as underwear or outerwear. Comfort and fit are better buying goals than a promise of faster running, quicker recovery or treatment for groin pain.

What compression shorts do, and what the evidence shows

Compression shorts are close-fitting stretch garments, often sold as sports base layers. Check the actual intended use rather than treating every product with compression in its name as interchangeable. A sports fit description is not a prescription for a medical pressure level.

A small randomized trial enrolled 34 male football players with groin pain. Zoned high-compression shorts reduced pain during some football tests compared with ordinary sports clothing, without worsening the measured performance. Only 27 players supplied the later football-activity feedback. The authors discussed possible placebo and carryover effects, and said results in other populations and sports remained unknown.

That study does not establish treatment for a new groin injury, injury prevention, or a benefit from every retail pair. It also does not justify a blanket claim that no compression study has ever found a performance effect. If pain is your reason for shopping, get assessment before choosing a tighter garment.

Compare construction, not just men's and women's labels

Women's high-rise styleRise, front seam and leg coverageDo not assume every women's pair has no front seam or the same waistband.

Gender labels are a starting point for the cut, not a guarantee of a particular feature. Read the construction details and compare measurements. For other lengths, see our compression leggings and athletic compression socks guides.

How to choose: inseam, fabric and waistband

For a concrete specification example, Under Armour lists its HeatGear Pocket men's shorts with a 9-inch inseam, no fly, a right-hip pocket and an 84% polyester/16% elastane body. The maker describes sweat-wicking fabric and a compression fit. Those are listing details for that model, not independent evidence of better athletic performance. Its product answer also says it has no dedicated cup pocket.

How to size compression shorts

Start with the exact maker's chart and its measurement locations. Do not copy another brand's size or a research-study chart. In the cited trial, sizing used pelvic and thigh measurements for the particular shorts studied; that does not establish a universal sizing system.

Hygiene and care

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends loose-fitting, moisture-wicking gym clothes, washing them after use, showering promptly after exercise and changing into clean clothes and underwear. Compression shorts are snug by design, so that advice should not be presented as a dermatologist endorsement of tight clothing. Choose another style if the fit aggravates your skin.

Follow the selected garment's care label. For example, the cited Under Armour model lists cold machine washing and low tumble drying, and says not to use fabric softeners. That is not a rule that every stretch garment must be air dried. Check the instructions before combining different garments in a load.

Plan your laundry around clean pairs rather than repeatedly wearing a sweaty one. AAD advises medical attention for possible infection signs such as increasing pain or swelling, pus or persistent redness. A moisture-wicking label does not make clothing infection-proof.

What to look for when you buy

Men's moisture-wicking compression shorts

Best for: Gym, team sports and a base layer under shorts

Compare the intended base-layer use, fabric description and fit under your usual outer shorts. Read the actual size chart and check the front construction.

Watch out: Do not assume every men's pair has a fly or cup pocket; check the listed features.

Men's compression shorts with cup pocket

Best for: Baseball, hockey, lacrosse and martial arts

A dedicated cup-pocket design is the relevant feature when your activity requires a protective cup. Check the cup compatibility and sport requirements.

Watch out: A phone pocket is not a cup pocket. Confirm whether a compatible cup is included.

Women's high-waist compression shorts

Best for: Running, gym and cycling

Compare the rise, waistband position and front-seam construction for the coverage you prefer. Check how the band fits when bending.

Watch out: A high waist does not guarantee no rolling or chafing. Do not assume all women's designs have the same seams.

Running compression shorts with longer inseam

Best for: Runners and walkers who get thigh chafing

A longer inseam provides more thigh coverage. Compare the hem position and seam placement where your skin or outer shorts tend to rub.

Watch out: Coverage is not a chafing guarantee; check movement and fit rather than choosing maximum tightness.

Multi-pack compression shorts

Best for: People who train several days a week

Multiple pairs can make a wash-after-use routine easier. Compare the per-pair construction, not just the number of pairs in the pack.

Watch out: Check size and hygiene-return rules before committing to several pairs in an unfamiliar cut.

When to talk to a doctor: Sports shorts are not a diagnosis or a substitute for prescribed medical compression. Get assessment for significant or recurring groin, hip or thigh pain. Remove a garment causing pain, numbness, tingling or concerning skin changes. Seek care for increasing skin pain or swelling, pus or persistent redness.

Questions people ask

What are compression shorts for?
They are close-fitting stretch shorts, often used as a sports base layer. Compare coverage and fit for comfort; the word compression alone does not establish a medical use or a performance benefit.
Do compression shorts improve performance?
Do not buy a pair on a promise that it will make you faster. The cited small football study evaluated particular shorts in players with groin pain, which cannot establish a benefit for every activity or retail garment.
Can compression shorts help groin pain?
The cited trial found some pain reductions with a specific zoned design in male football players. It does not diagnose your pain or establish that ordinary retail shorts treat its cause. Get assessment for ongoing or significant symptoms.
Should you wear underwear under compression shorts?
Check whether the selected model is intended as a base layer, underwear or outerwear. Follow its instructions and consider any required protective equipment. Change into clean clothing after exercise.
How tight should compression shorts be?
Follow the maker's chart, then check movement and comfort. Remove shorts causing pain, numbness, tingling or concerning skin changes. Ride-up or bunching is a reason to reassess the cut and fit, not an automatic instruction to size down.
