How the three bags score
Our spec score uses eight checks from the makers’ own pages, weighted the same for every bag. The method is at the bottom of the page.
Life in Good Form spec score out of 10, from each maker’s page and Amazon listing, read Oct 22, 2026. It is not a customer rating or a climbing test.

You carry two brushes. The Petzl SAKAPOCHE has a double brush slot.
Black Diamond’s Mojo Zip scored 9.2, the top score on this page. It passes all eight of our checks, and it’s the only pick that does. The model code on the Amazon listing matches the Burnt Sienna M/L in Black Diamond’s own store.
Black Diamond calls the Mojo Zip its classic chalk bag. It’s a cylinder with a pliable wire rim that keeps the opening round, so your hand goes straight in. Black Diamond describes the lower part as abrasion-resistant TPU.
The zip pocket sits on the back. Black Diamond says it holds keys, a route topo or a smartphone. It’s one of two picks whose maker names a phone, which matters if you film your climbs or need it on the wall.
Inside, the bag is lined with fleece, and a cord lock cinches the top shut. Black Diamond adds one brush holder on the outside, and a webbing belt with a quick-release buckle comes with the bag.
It comes in two sizes, S/M and M/L, and weighs 95 g by Black Diamond’s figure. Public Lands’ buying guide says most chalk bags for roped climbing come in two sizes, with the smaller one suited to shorter routes. The listing we link is the M/L. Black Diamond also makes it in Carbon, Moonstone, Foam Green and Glacier.
Black Diamond covers its products with a two-year warranty. That’s where the Mojo Zip gives up points to the SAKAPOCHE, along with brush slots: one holder here against Petzl’s two.
One thing to know before you order. Black Diamond’s own store says this bag contains PFAS and won’t ship it to California, New York or Colorado. It doesn’t say which part. If you live in one of those states, check that Amazon will deliver it, or choose the SAKAPOCHE.

You climb long routes, carry a topo or a headlamp, and use more than one brush.

You want a phone pocket. Petzl doesn’t name one; the Mojo Zip and Oso do.
Petzl’s SAKAPOCHE scored 8.5. Petzl sells it next to the SAKA, its ergonomic bag without a pocket, and that pocket is what lifts it over the SAKA, which scored 6.5. The Amazon listing is Petzl’s Black Dazzle color, SKU S040AB02.
Petzl gives it a rigid rim that keeps the bag’s shape, and an ergonomic shape built for easy hand access. The liner is sewn into the bottom, so it stays in place when you pull your hand out.
The pocket is gusseted, which means it expands. Petzl suggests keys, a small headlamp, a route topo or an energy bar: the small provisions for long days on a wall. Petzl doesn’t name a phone, which is why the matcher below sends phone carriers to the other two picks.
It leads our brush check. Petzl fits a double textile brush slot that holds different brush types, and it’s the only pick with two. If you carry a big brush for slopers and a small one for crimps, this is the bag with room for both.
The closure is a drawstring with a cord lock, and Petzl says it keeps chalk from spilling during transport. Petzl makes the bag from 100% recycled polyester and nylon, cut in an irregular pattern to waste less fabric, so each bag looks a little different. It weighs 85 g, 10 g less than the Mojo Zip.
Petzl’s guarantee runs three years, the longest of any bag we checked.
Two checks hold the score back. Petzl’s page doesn’t list a belt, though the Amazon listing’s title and photo show one, so check the listing before you order. And Petzl calls the lining a liner without naming fleece, where our other two picks name it.

You brush holds. Oso lists no brush holder; the SAKAPOCHE has two slots.
Oso Supply Co’s Classic Chalk Bag scored 7.3. The Amazon listing’s features match Oso’s own page: zip pocket, mesh pouch, drawcord, structured rim and quick-release belt. We link the Magenta listing; Oso’s store calls that color Magenta and Teal.
It carries the most of our three picks. Oso pairs a zippered pocket with a breathable mesh pouch and says they’re for a phone and small essentials. That ties it with the Mojo Zip on our pocket check, and the mesh pouch is an extra the other two don’t have.
Oso gives it a structured rim, a soft fleece lining and an adjustable drawcord. It’s 7 in tall and 5 in across, the only pick with both dimensions published. At 4 oz, about 113 g, it’s also the heaviest pick.
Oso builds it from 100% recycled polyester, and its page notes that the purchase supports the Access Fund. The Amazon listing adds dual attachment points that keep the bag secure, plus an adjustable quick-clip waist belt.
Two checks cost it points. Oso lists no brush holder, so it scores zero there. And Oso publishes no warranty term. Its returns policy covers 30 days, and only for orders placed on Oso’s own site, so Amazon’s return policy is the one that applies to this listing.
Oso says the Classic is built for gym sessions and days at the crag. If you climb indoors, keep a phone on you and don’t brush holds, it covers what you need, and the quick-release belt comes with it.
Oso makes it in eight colors, from Lilac Tan and Orange to Cascade Green, Olive and Midnight Blue and Red. Its store showed Black and Powder Blue and Yellow sold out when we checked, and Amazon carries other colors as separate listings.

Evolv’s warranty excludes Amazon orders; no pocket or brush holder listed
Hard-wearing canvas, belt included
8BPLUS’s chalk bag store is the first result on Google for “chalk bag”, and its Probag does several things well. 8BPLUS gives it a 5 in opening, an extra stiffened rim, two brush holders and a belt sized XS to XL, plus a carabiner. It has no pocket, and 8BPLUS offers 100 days of warranty and returns, so it scored 6.6.
Evolv says it doesn’t sell directly to Amazon and doesn’t cover Amazon purchases under its warranty. Its Canvas bag is listed on Amazon by a third-party seller, so we left it out.
Which chalk bag fits how you climb?
The three picks carry different things. Say where you climb, what you bring and how many brushes you use, and we match each bag’s own specs to it.
Chalk bag matcher
Each line uses only that maker’s own page or Amazon listing.
Black Diamond Mojo Zip Chalk Bag (best match): Black Diamond’s listing names gym sessions. Black Diamond names a smartphone for the pocket. One brush holder.
Petzl SAKAPOCHE Chalk Bag: Rigid rim for easy hand access. Petzl doesn’t name a phone for the pocket. Double brush slot.
Oso Supply Co Classic Chalk Bag: Oso names gym sessions. Oso names a phone for the pocket. No brush holder listed.
Best match means the bag whose maker claims cover the most of your needs; ties go to the higher spec score.

Public Lands’ buying guide says a zippered pocket holds snacks, tape or a phone, and points to it for multi-pitch routes and long days. That’s why a pocket carries 20% of our score.
If you only climb in a gym and leave your things in a locker, a pocket matters less. The Petzl SAKA and 8BPLUS Probag in our left-out table are the same idea without one.
Shape and opening
A chalk bag only works if your hand gets in fast. Shape and the rim decide that.

Public Lands says size labels vary a lot, so check that your whole hand fits through the opening of a standard bag. For a small bag you only dip your fingertips in, it should stay propped open and let at least four fingers in and out fast.
A rim is what keeps a bag propped open. All three picks name one, which is why they share full marks on that check. Wild Country names no rim for the Flow, and it lost 2 points there.
Closure and lining
The closure keeps chalk in your bag and out of your pack. The lining spreads chalk on your hand.

Soft fleece (100% polyester)
Public Lands says the best chalk bags have a tight cinch closure and a fuzzy interior that clings to powder, so you coat your hands evenly. Mammut says the same of its fleece: it reduces dust and spreads chalk evenly in the hand.
We give a cord lock full marks and a plain drawstring 8, because the lock holds the top shut without a knot. Petzl’s sewn-in liner earns half marks for lining. Petzl explains why it’s sewn: so the liner stays put when you take your hand out.
Brush holders
A brush cleans chalk and grease off holds. A holder keeps it on the bag.
Brush slots named on each maker’s page, read Oct 22, 2026. Gray bars are left-out bags.
Public Lands describes the holder as a small elastic bungee or fabric sleeve for a brush to scrub chalk-caked or greasy holds. Petzl’s double textile slot holds different brush types. 8BPLUS puts one holder on each side, for left- and right-handed climbers.
Oso lists no brush holder on the Classic, so if you brush often, the SAKAPOCHE or Mojo Zip saves you finding somewhere to clip a brush.
Belt, harness or carabiner
Most chalk bags hang from a belt that sits over your harness. Here’s what each maker includes.
Bag
How it attaches, per the maker
Black Diamond Mojo Zip
Webbing belt with quick-release buckle
Petzl SAKAPOCHE
No belt on Petzl’s page; the Amazon title and photo show one
Oso Classic

8BPLUS Probag (left out)

Mammut Gym Basic (left out)
Adjustable drawstring waistband
Public Lands says to try the belt on: it should sit loosely around your hips, hanging just over the top of your harness. An adjustable belt leaves room to add or shed layers outdoors.
If the stock belt doesn’t suit you, Public Lands says a section of cordelette tied with an overhand knot can replace it. 8BPLUS adds a carabiner so you can clip the bag wherever you like.
Warranty and weight
A seam or zip can still fail. Among the bags we checked, warranties run from none to three years.
Warranty or guarantee terms from each maker’s site, read Oct 22, 2026. Gray bars are left-out bags. Evolv’s warranty excludes Amazon orders.

Public Lands notes that tapered bags suit weight-conscious sport climbers, while cylinder and pear shapes can run heavier. The spread here is about 33 g, the SAKA against the Oso, with the chalk you add on top.
Petzl’s three years is the longest guarantee we found. Black Diamond, Mammut’s US site and Wild Country each give two. Oso’s page offers 30-day returns on its own orders and no warranty term.
Chalk bag or chalk bucket?
Belt bags go up the wall with you. Buckets stay on the ground. Our picks are all belt bags.
Type
What it is
Best for, per Public Lands
Belt chalk bag
Worn on a belt over your harness
Gym, sport and trad routes; the picks above
Small chalk bag
A lighter bag for fingertip dips
Shorter routes; less weight to carry
Standard chalk bag
A larger bag for a full day’s chalk
Multi-pitch and long days
Chalk bucket or pot
Oversized bag with a wide, sturdy base
Bouldering; sharing at group sessions
Children’s chalk bag
A smaller children’s size
Children who climb
Public Lands says boulderers may want a chalk bucket that’s left on the ground, since bouldering uses a lot of chalk and a big pot is easy to share. It names leak-proof roll-top or twist closures, especially for chalk pots. A bucket is a different product, so we don’t score it against belt bags here.
One bouldering bucket on Amazon is Black Diamond’s Mondo Chalk Pot. For the chalk itself (block, powder, ball or liquid), see our gym chalk guide.
How to use and fill a chalk bag
The basics, from Public Lands’ guide and the makers’ own pages.
1
Fit the belt
Loose, just over the harness.
2
Add chalk
Loose chalk or a chalk ball.
3
Check the opening
Your whole hand fits.
4
Dip when you sweat
Coat your fingers and palm.
5
Close it to travel
Cinch the cord lock.
A chalk bag holds your chalk within arm’s reach, so you can coat your hands again whenever they get sweaty on the wall. That’s how Public Lands defines it, and it’s why the opening and rim matter more than anything else.
Fill it with loose chalk or a chalk ball. Public Lands notes that a pear-shaped bag leaves room to wrap your hand around a full chalk ball. Our gym chalk guide covers the forms of chalk.
Close the bag before it goes in your pack. Petzl says its closure keeps chalk from spilling in transport, and Black Diamond’s cord lock cinches the top.
For most climbers, the Black Diamond Mojo Zip: a wire rim, a zip pocket for keys or a smartphone, fleece lining, a cord lock, a brush holder and a belt. For two brushes and a three-year guarantee, the Petzl SAKAPOCHE. For a pocket plus a mesh pouch, the Oso Classic.
How do you use a chalk bag?
Wear it on its belt, loosely over the top of your harness, with chalk inside. When your hands get sweaty on the wall, dip in and coat them. Close it before it goes in your pack so chalk doesn’t spill.
How do you fill a chalk bag?
Add loose chalk or drop in a chalk ball. Public Lands notes that a pear-shaped bag leaves room to wrap your hand around a full chalk ball. Our gym chalk guide covers block, powder, ball and liquid chalk.
What do you put in a chalk bag?
Chalk goes in the main bag, and a brush goes in the brush holder. Pockets carry small things: Black Diamond names keys, a route topo or a smartphone, Petzl names keys, a small headlamp and an energy bar, and Oso names a phone.
How do you attach a chalk bag to a harness?
Most chalk bags hang from a belt worn over the harness, sitting loosely around your hips. Public Lands says a length of cordelette tied with an overhand knot works if the belt doesn’t fit. 8BPLUS includes a carabiner with its Probag for clipping.
Do you need a chalk bag with a pocket?
Not for every climber. Public Lands says a zippered pocket is great for multi-pitch routes and long days, holding snacks, tape or a phone. All three of our picks have one; the Petzl SAKA and 8BPLUS Probag don’t.
What size chalk bag should I get?
Public Lands says most roped-climbing bags come in two sizes: a small one for shorter routes, and a larger standard size that holds a full day’s chalk for multi-pitch. Either way, your whole hand should fit through the opening.
What are the different types of chalk bags?
Public Lands sorts them by shape (tapered, cylinder and pear) and by use: belt bags in small and standard sizes for routes, larger chalk buckets for bouldering, and children’s sizes.
What is the inside of a chalk bag made of?
Usually fleece or soft pile, which Public Lands says clings to chalk and coats your hands evenly. Black Diamond, Oso, Mammut and 8BPLUS name fleece. Petzl uses a liner sewn into the bottom of the bag.
Is a chalk bucket better for bouldering?
Public Lands says boulderers may want one: an oversized bag with a wide, sturdy bottom that stays on the ground, holds more chalk and is easy to share. For roped climbing, a belt bag goes up the wall with you.
How we pick, and how the score works
Why trust us
Life in Good Form is owned and edited by Isaac Daniels. Every spec on this page comes from the maker’s own page or Amazon listing, named in the sources below, and the buying advice comes from Public Lands’ published guide. We don’t run climbing tests, so we never present a number as measured by us.
Prices and photos come from Amazon and show the time they were read.
How we pick
Belt-worn chalk bags only. Floor buckets and chalk itself have their own pages or notes.
Specs read from the maker, not from other review sites.
Each Amazon listing checked as genuine, new and in stock the day we updated, and matched to the maker’s model or SKU.
Every pick checked against CPSC recalls.
Every pick scores 7.0 or more on our spec score below.
How the spec score is calculated
Every chalk bag we scored gets the same eight checks. A bag needs 7.0 or more to be a pick. Each check is scored out of 10, and the overall score is the weighted average.
A rim and a pocket carry the most weight, then the warranty. It’s built from the makers’ published specs only, and it isn’t a customer rating or a test.
