What a body groomer does differently
Body groomers are built around skin protection. Philips says its Bodygroom 1100 safely trims intimate hair and has a skin protection system that lets you trim as close as 0.5mm without direct contact between the sharp edge of the blades and your skin.
Its Body Groomer 5000 uses a dual head: a trimmer with rounded blade tips that Philips says are crafted to be gentle on skin, plus a Triple Protect shave system with pearl tips and a guard it says minimizes skin irritation. For your face, see our electric razor guide.

Details are from Philips product pages. Philips lists a 30 month manufacturer warranty with product registration for the 1100.
On the 5000's shaver, Philips describes diamond-shaped holes that let skin dome gently into the foil, alongside the pearl tips and guard. On the 1100, it says the bidirectional trimmer and 3mm comb let you cut hair that grows in any direction. Both are described as fully waterproof, so you can rinse them clean.
How to trim safely
- Trim dry first. Philips says that for best results, use its Bodygroom on dry hair before showering, and that pre-trimming is recommended for thicker hair.
- Go with the grain on bare skin. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says to shave in the direction that the hair grows.
- Use the bidirectional head for hair that grows in different directions, as Philips describes for the 1100.
- Do not stretch or pull skin hard and do not pluck trapped hairs; the AAD says doing either can cause new razor bumps.
Shaving after trimming
If you want skin-smooth results, a shaver head or razor comes after trimming. The AAD's shaving advice is to wet your skin and hair to soften it first, a great time being right after a shower, then apply a shaving cream or gel. If you have very dry or sensitive skin, it suggests a shaving cream that says sensitive skin on the label.
If you use a blade razor for this step, the AAD says to change the blade or throw away disposable razors after 5 to 7 shaves to minimize irritation, and to rinse after each swipe.
Cleaning and storage
- Rinse the head. Philips says its showerproof groomers can be used in or out of the shower and cleaned easily.
- Store it dry. The AAD advises storing razors in a dry area and letting them dry completely between uses to prevent bacteria from growing, and not leaving them in the shower or on a wet sink. The same habit suits a trimmer.
- Replace worn parts. Philips sells replacement foils for its body groomers, such as the BG2010 foil.
Irritation, bumps and when to get help
Bumps that keep coming back after grooming can be ingrown hairs. The AAD explains that when hairs are cut short, coarse or curly hairs can curve into the skin and cause razor bumps, and recommends seeing a dermatologist if bumps continue after you change your technique.
Wash with a gentle cleanser afterward; see our body wash guide. Get medical advice for painful, pus-filled or spreading bumps.
