Bat length by age
Rawlings calls its bat chart a general guide. By age it lists:
- 5 to 7 years: 24 to 26 inches
- 8 to 9 years: 26 to 28 inches
- 10 years: 28 to 29 inches
- 11 to 12 years: 30 to 31 inches
- 13 to 14 years: 31 to 32 inches
- 15 to 16 years: 32 to 33 inches
- 17 and up: 34 inches
Rawlings also publishes a height and weight grid. It crosses height bands with weight bands, so read across from the player's weight to their height column. When a player is tall or short for their age, the height and weight grid is the closer guide.
USABat vs BBCOR
USA Baseball says both its standard and BBCOR, which the NCAA and NFHS use, rate bats on how much energy comes back off a bat-ball hit, but with different test balls and speeds. It says the two perform nearly identically.
- Drop weight. The main difference, per USA Baseball, is that USABat bats do not have the -3 drop weight restriction that BBCOR bats carry. USABat has no drop-weight limit, so young players can use lighter bats.
- Easier to swing. USA Baseball says lighter USABat bats are easier for developing hitters to swing but produce slightly lower hit ball speeds than BBCOR bats.
- Barrel size. USABat bats are certified with barrels of 2-5/8 inches and less.
In July 2026, Little League said USA Baseball will oversee a newly branded USA BBCOR standard and that this does not affect its 2026 tournaments or the 2027 seasons.
Wood, metal and tee ball bats
- Wood. USA Baseball says solid, one-piece wood bats are approved under USABat with or without the certification mark, while multi-piece and composite wood bats must carry the mark.
- Metal and composite. USA Baseball notes these tend to be more durable and lighter than wood; USABat versions are designed to perform much like wood.
- Tee ball. Certified tee ball bats carry text saying they are only for use with approved tee balls. In Little League, approved tee ball bats may be used in coach pitch or machine pitch divisions only with approved tee balls.
Check the mark before you buy
USA Baseball says any bat bearing the USA Baseball mark is allowed in leagues and tournaments that require USABat, and that it keeps a full approved list. It can also decertify a model if retail bats do not match the tested design; a decertified model is no longer approved for play. Because each length and drop is certified separately, one length of a model can be decertified while others stay approved.
Before buying, a simple routine helps:
- Ask your league or coach which standard applies to your division.
- Look for the matching mark on the bat's handle or in the listing photos.
- Pick a length from the chart, then let the player try a few swings if you can.
- Check the barrel size if your division lists a maximum.
Choosing between two lengths
If the age chart and the height and weight grid disagree, go with the grid, since it reflects the player's size. When a player sits between two lengths, the shorter, lighter option is usually easier to control, which lines up with USA Baseball's point that lighter bats are easier for developing hitters to swing.
