Agility ladders: what they do, which one to buy and drills to start with

By the Life in Good Form editors. Updated 2026-10-14.

We research products from makers' specs and health sources; we do not run hands-on tests. Links to Amazon may earn us a commission at no cost to you. How this works.

Quick answerAn agility ladder lays out spaces on the ground for planned footwork drills. Choose a flat strap ladder for a simple portable setup, rigid hinged rails if that folding style suits you, or a convertible ladder if your training plan includes raised obstacles. Check total length, usable spaces, surface instructions and storage. Practicing a memorized pattern is different from reacting to an opponent, so do not buy on a promise of better game agility alone.

What an agility ladder is used for

A training ladder provides a visible sequence of spaces for stepping and other footwork patterns. It can be part of a coach-led warm-up or coordination practice. Unlike a ladder for climbing, it is placed on the ground; ordinary footwork is performed through or around the spaces rather than by standing on the rungs.

For a home or team purchase, begin with the intended drills and users. A simple flat pattern, a sequence of lateral steps and raised hurdles are different tasks. Children need appropriate instruction and supervision, and a team setup needs enough room that participants do not cross into another drill.

The useful reason to buy is that you want portable markers for a planned practice. A ladder is not a complete conditioning program, a fall-prevention device or a substitute for sport-specific coaching.

Do agility ladders improve sports performance?

A 2020 systematic review found only five eligible studies, lasting 4 to 8 weeks, and highlighted poorly described exercises and narrow performance measures. It concluded that broad claims about improving agility and other physical skills were premature on that evidence. This describes the literature reviewed then, not a claim that no later studies exist.

A 2026 trial compared computerized agility training with rope-ladder training in 64 male college basketball players over 4 weeks. Computerized training produced greater improvements on several foot-speed, reaction and basketball-specific measures. The results were specific to that comparison and group; they do not establish the effect of every retail ladder or a program for children.

Use a ladder to mark repeatable positions during footwork practice. A coach can add changing cues and direction changes when the plan calls for decisions as well as memorized patterns. Choose equipment for that plan and keep broader sport practice; judge the program by the skills it is meant to train.

Compare dimensions and construction

Maker exampleWhat the maker lists
SKLZ Quick Ladder15 ft long, with 11 plastic rungs 17 in wide, plus a carry bag.
SKLZ Quick Ladder ProRigid hinged side rails, with ends and sides that can attach to more ladders.
SKLZ Elevation Ladder7 ft long with 6 rungs; each rung is listed as 26 in wide and 15 in long. It converts from flat use to 4-inch hurdles.

These are individual product examples, not standard dimensions for all agility ladders. Check what the quoted width refers to: overall rung width and the usable space for your feet need not be identical. Look at the actual layout before choosing a drill or assuming a shoe will fit.

Measure the total training area, including room to start, finish and slow down without entering furniture, walls or another person’s lane. A ladder that fits along a hallway may still be unsuitable for lateral movements.

Compare whether rung spacing is adjustable, how settings are retained and what happens if a rung moves during practice. For a kit, confirm the included ladder length, cones, connectors and bag. Accessories shown in a photo are not necessarily supplied.

SKLZ describes the Pro’s low-profile edges as designed to reduce cleat catches. Treat that as a construction feature, not a guarantee against tripping. Check permitted surfaces and footwear for the actual product, especially if you plan to use it indoors and on a field.

Flat, rigid or convertible: pick for setup and storage

A flat strap ladder is a straightforward choice if you want to pack it into a bag and lay out a sequence of spaces. Check how the straps stay aligned and how easily the ladder can be reset after someone touches a rung. Choose a layout you can inspect without spending the session untangling it.

A rigid-rail ladder changes the setup and folding process. For the cited Pro, SKLZ lists hinged rails and connections for adding ladders. Confirm compatibility before buying another section, and compare the folded package with the space in which you will carry and store it.

A convertible ladder adds raised obstacles to the flat layout. The cited Elevation model can be used in either form, but that does not mean a beginner needs to start with hurdles. Choose raised work only when it fits the participants and instruction. Check how every section locks into the intended position.

Cones can help mark starts, finishes or a separate change-of-direction task. A ladder-and-cone set is convenient if you need both, but compare the actual pieces with a planned layout. More accessories do not by themselves create a better training program.

Simple patterns and setup checks

Learn a simple pattern slowly on a flat setup before adding speed. Examples include stepping forward through successive spaces, placing both feet in a space before moving on, or facing sideways and stepping along the sequence. A coach can demonstrate the pattern and help choose the next task for the user.

Keep the area clear and the ladder positioned as its instructions require. Choose footwear and a surface suited to the activity; do not assume cleats belong on every surface or that a training ladder stays put without checking it.

Inspect the layout between passes. If a rung moves, a rail folds or a connection loosens, stop and reset or repair the equipment as directed. Reduce speed if you repeatedly catch it; do not practice through a damaged setup or push through pain to finish a pattern.

Leave recovery between passes so the task remains controlled. This guide does not prescribe a universal session duration, pass count or jumping progression. Raise difficulty with the plan, rather than copying a fast video or adding hurdles just because the product converts.

If a recent injury, balance problem or history of falls affects participation, ask a qualified clinician about suitable exercise before using floor obstacles. Stop a task that causes pain or concerning symptoms. A balance pad is also separate equipment, not automatic clearance for unsupervised balance practice.

What to look for when you buy

Flat strap agility ladder with a carry bag

Best for: A simple portable layout for planned footwork

Compare total length, rung count, width and any spacing adjustment. SKLZ’s cited Quick Ladder illustrates the flat strap format.

Watch out: Straps or rungs can move. Check alignment and allow space for the full drill, including starts and finishes.

Rigid hinged agility ladder

Best for: Buyers who prefer a folding rail design

Compare how it opens, folds and connects. SKLZ’s cited Pro offers rigid hinged sides and connections for extending the layout.

Watch out: Check folded dimensions and connector compatibility. Low-profile edges do not guarantee shoes will never catch.

Convertible ladder and low hurdles

Best for: A supervised plan that includes flat and raised work

A convertible design offers different layouts in the same equipment. Check the raised height, locking method and included instructions.

Watch out: Raised obstacles introduce a different task. Do not assume every beginner or recovering athlete should use them.

Agility ladder and cone kit

Best for: Coaches or families who need markers for a varied layout

Compare the ladder and accessories against the drills you plan to set up. Confirm connectors, cones and carry storage are included.

Watch out: Length and contents vary by kit. Keep drills separated so participants have a clear route and space to finish.

When to talk to a doctor: Floor ladders and raised hurdles introduce obstacles. Ask a clinician about suitable exercise if an injury, balance problem or history of falls affects participation. Stop for pain or concerning symptoms. Neither low-profile edges nor a balance accessory is medical clearance or a guarantee against falls.

Questions people ask

Will an agility ladder make me better in a game?
It gives you a way to practice planned footwork. That is different from reacting to a changing situation in a sport. The research discussed here does not establish a universal performance gain from buying a ladder.
What is the standard agility-ladder size?
There is no single size established here. Compare the exact product’s total length, rung count, width and usable spaces, then check your full drill area. The maker examples above illustrate different layouts.
Are rigid rails safer than flat straps?
Do not choose on a general safety promise. Compare the actual edges, hinges, stability and surface instructions. Both designs need inspection, a clear area and drills appropriate for the participants.
Should a beginner start with hurdles?
Choose the task for the person and training plan. Learn a controlled flat pattern first if that is appropriate, with instruction as needed. Converting equipment into hurdles does not itself establish readiness for raised obstacles.
How long should a ladder workout last?
There is no universal duration prescribed here. Match practice and recovery to the participants, task and overall program. Stop and reassess if technique breaks down, equipment moves or a drill causes pain.
